Hi there,
just browsed through my links and saw that the Gamecenter preview for GPL
from April 1997 ist still online.
Interesting read after nearly 4 years and 2 years of driving GPL :-). Just
compare the beta-screenshots from that article to an screenshot of an maxed
out GPL with an GPLEA Track, GPLEA-Cars and 3d Wheels. Hmm, I'm glad that
GPL was released later than expected in 1997 ;-).

Snipped from the review.....
========================
Drivers will take to the streets ...........in any one of seven cars--all of
which, of course, can be modified and upgraded as races are won and prize
money earned.
========================
Well, thank God they didn't include THIS lovely arcade touch!
Also snipped.........
========================
Many of the authentic tracks include natural jumps, so drivers will have to
master in-flight steering and accelerating.
=========================
Has anyone yet mastered the art of steering and accelerating whilst
airborne?!
I tried it and found that the wheels lack a certain amount of grip :-)

Not recommended for the "maxed out GPL with an GPLEA Track, GPLEA-Cars and
3d Wheels" though
:-)

Interesting link.
Too bad this game wasn't a commercial success. It's a damned good piece of
software, capable of ruining marriages, or preventing marriages :-)
I bought my first PC at the time GPL was realeased. GPL was not on my
shopping list at the time, in spite of me being a racing enthusiast. The
reasons were:
1) I don't like open wheel racing
2) '67 cars are ugly
After reading postings on this newgroup, and being sent a CD with an illegal
copy of GPL from a friend, I gave the game a try 2. december 1999, with the
1.2 patch and my new MSFF steering wheel.
Wow!! It blew my socks off!
Knuckles turned white. Jaw dropped down on my chest. My armpits got
annoyingly wet. This was *the* game.
My newly purchased RC2000 was placed on the shelf, on spite of being a very
good rally game indeed (which is my preferred motor sport). After 2.
december 1999 there was no game but GPL for me.
When I learned that GPL was to be in the bargain bins, I immediately ran out
to buy the full priced game. Luckily, I found what I was lookinng for.
Now, almost a year later, RC2000 still collects dust, as well as the rest of
my apartment (can't waiste valuable GPL time).
Thanks, Papyrus.
You have given a new standard to which every racing game will be measured
against for several years to come.
Today expectation of WSC, N4 and other games not released yet are high. They
are being compared to GPL. Sadly, I fear a lot of people will be
disappointed with those games. Those games will most likely have an arcadish
feel. GPL has proven that a racing game with realistic physics isn't what
the mass market demands. Thus most games will be less hard core sim than
GPL.
Anyway. I don't need other games. I have GPL. I could be driving GPL for at
least another year, and still have room for improving my lap times.
I never thought a game could have such high value for money as this game has
proven to have.
Wow!
Jon Andersen
if read by the average Joe, this means that you get to fly your car through
the air...but to a person who understands car dynamics, this just means
controlling the car using the wheel and engine inertia...just like how your
car rotates on the grid when revving the engine, the car also rotates in the
air when you rev the engine...the same when turning the front tires due to
the gyroscopic effect of the spinning tires.

I still havn't found a way to get rid of those damn wet armpits...have you?

Try this, though...
Go to the Ring. Take the Flugplatz at racing speed. Once in the air, brake
hard. See what happens to the nose. Now do the same again without braking.
See?
Rally drivers make use of this sort of thing all the time - apparently
Colin McRae 2 will model it (if it ever gets on the bloody shelves - you
listening, Codemasters?).

If WSC turns out to be an arcade game, some people are going to look
*extremely* stupid. And some of us are going to be *extremely* upset. In
any case, WSC doesn't look like a mass-market game to me.

Jon,
You won't be disappointed in N4. The graphics, physics, driving model,
etc., are all better than GPL (according to totally reliable insider
reports). However, if you don't like stock cars, it won't be much fun, and
if you only have eyes for road racing (like me), the Glen and Sears Pt. make
for a pretty thin game.

I couldn't get it to run well on a P166, and I had a Voodoo 3D at the time....

Thanks for the interesting read, Jon.
Now I wish Papyrus/Sierra would set another new standard in the
games industry by open-sourcing GPL and let the community
improve it (which it has done already, but mostly by
reverse-engineering file formats and stuff with hardly any help
from Sierra whatsoever).
I know its probably not going to happen in my lifetime, but
one can dream. Just imagine what would be possible with demi-gods
like Reeve, Nooan, Granberg, Hine (just to name a few, this list is
by no means complete) or maybe even some of the original
developers having full access to the source code and starting a
project on sourceforge.net.
Heck, even *I* could probably hack it in such a way that
records for non standard-tracks could be handled on gplrank or
whatever.

Back then, I considered this could be the right hand kink on the
bridge just before the Quiddelbacher Hhe jump at Flugplatz.
