Does anyone know the process for modifying GPL tracks? Is there a track
editor available?
from what I've heard, it's very difficult to modify the original tracks.
GPLEA and Noonan (and some others) are creating them from cratch with very
not-public tools.
(which is great, in terms of preventing cheating)

oh yeah, they have suck your mind off...
my boy, "not-publicness" of these tools is first of all great for their
superego

The nearest thing is Paul Hoad's project (see link elsewhere in this
thread), but that doesn't seem to have been updated for ages.
The pacesetters in this are (ie GPLEA and Dave Noonan) in effect write the
things from scratch, and as far as I know they don't have any inclination
to release their tools - partly because they don't want the inevitable
flood of email help requests, partly because they want to concentrate on
what they are doing (NB: either get on with JTRC or scrap it now - don't
keep delaying), and partly because they don't want everyone else profiting
from all their hard work...
From what I understand, track creation in GPL is not remotely trivial, so
if you don't already know roughly how you'd do it you probably don't have
the necessary programming skills. If you're determined to have a go, good
luck to you, but it's not at all like using the GP2 editor.
And, of course, you can't just release modified tracks created by changing
an original track file, as that would infringe copyright. You'd have to use
the "overlaid patch" method that people who create cars/adverts etc use.
So as you see, it's not going to be at all straightforward. But if all that
hasn't put you off, go ahead - how about Oulton Park for starters? :)

If you look at the Bremgarten project, http://home.datacomm.ch/srcb/ it
seems as though they've got permission to use the GPLEA toolset.
I would think it was worth approaching GPLEA, but only if you have a
realistic plan of which track you want to model, how you're going to do
it, and a dedicated team to actually do the work!
