My first guess is the video card not the game. If you read the read me file
that comes with Heat it mentions something about ATI cards, but I'm not sure
what. Something about texture memory or something.

The ATI Rage Pro, is one of the worst cards you could ever want...you will
most likely continue to have problems with it no matter what you do....the
drivers never seemed to get better before I popped a Voodoo 3 in.
Get a new video card, what is your price range?

Hercules GeForce 2 MX is a STEAL at $129 at Best Buy. I'm running max
details/distance full res (1280ish) and it's SWEET! On a PII 450 I feel
like I'm looking at a DVD movie... it's just brilliant!
No kidding, run out and buy one. You'll be VERY glad you did.
Other games that love this card...
SuperBike 2001
F1 2000
FAKK 2
and more of course. Gotta go race more, this game is fantastic :)

Oh, but the reason I actually posted was to say that the Rage Pro, while
somewhat slow and lame, really should run Heat with the correct
drivers--we've run on a variety of Rage Pro's on both PC's and laptops with
no crashing/lockup problems. Black groove and ugly smoke, yes. So you
probably have sketchy drivers or a system conflict (I'm guessing the
All-in-Wonders use more IRQ's and such for their video capture stuff,
increasing the chance for conflict, but who knows)
If you decide to replace your video card with a different and newer kind,
you may get lucky and have a stable system, assuming the problem was just in
the drivers, or not, if it was some other conflict. Just make sure you
switch to using "standard VGA adapter" and uninstall all the ATI stuff
before you swap cards, to (somewhat) increase the chance of success.

When I installed the standard drivers that came with Win98 SE on a fresh Win
98 SE install the board kinda sorta worked. (It would lock up 1 out of 3
times when loading.)
When I played it I would have strange things happening: Like grass growing
in the middle of the Daytona International Speedway!!
I downloaded the latest drivers from ATI and installed them. Then, Heat
wouldn't load at all. It would just lock the computer. Trying to revert
back to the stock drivers (that came with 98SE) didn't work either. A fresh
install of Win98SE got me back to where I started. (Good thing this Win98
partition is only for games!)
I did purchase a Voodoo 3 AGP 3000 last night at BestBuy. Nascar HEAT works
FLAWLESSLY now! It's incredible! I should have done this years ago.
But tell me ... was the V3 my best choice? I purchase it because 1) It was
MUCH cheaper than the V5. And 2) It's been around a while so that the
drivers are a bit more mature and the game support is probably universal.
But, I've got 13 more days to return it ... so if there isa better choice
... so far I'm really impressed with it.

kept it alive by porting it to AGP, etc, as well as laptops (the Rage
Mobility is very similar to the Rage Pro). The original Rage Pro's had a
number of image quality problems (the mipmapping appeared to use a random
number generator to pick mipmaps, etc); there are newer Rage Pro's that have
some improvements, including (I think) the ability to do alpha blending and
bilinear filtering at the same time (a lot of Rage Pro's will get blocky
smoke effects due to this limitation). Most of the Rage Pro's also don't
support combining vertex alpha with alpha textures, which means that we
can't "fade in" the smoke or the "wear groove", so the smoke pops out and
the groove is black. Probably somewhat worse than the Intel 810 chipset,
which is the other lousy video solution a lot of end-users are getting stuck
with, but at least you're more likely to actually have an AGP slot so you
can upgrade. It always breaks my heart to see the circular advertisements
for these super-fast CPU's mated to stone-age 3D accelerators.
The Rage128 is a pretty different beast; has more of an at least somewhat
modern architecture and feature set; closer to a TNT-era design. The
Rage128 Pro is a tweaked Rage128 with higher clock rates and some other
enhancements; putting two of them on one card will give you more fillrate
(ala Fury MAXX). Unlike the Voodoo SLI strategy, which renders alternate
scanlines on each chip, the dual Rage128Pro solutions render alternate
_frames_ on each card, which gives higher throughput at the expense of
increased latency. If I recall correctly, like the two-chip Voodoo5
flavors, you need two copies of every texture in VRAM, so a 64MB card is
actually like a 32MB card, etc. The new Macintoshes use Rage128's and 128
Pro's--the old iMac was outfitted with the old Rage Pro chipset.
Ah, those wacky Canadians at ATI...
