This Dreamcast game is excellent. The physics model is as demanding as GPL, but
the graphics are far better, even on a low rez TV screen. For anyone who ever
thought that a game console could not do a decent physics model, this game will
challenge that notion. In combination with 3 other state of the art videogames,
( NFL 2K1 which blows away Madden 2001 for the PC, near perfect animation) ,
(NBA 2K there's nothing even close on any other platform when it comes to near
photorealism in a sportsgame, and the newer versions due out soon) , (Virtua
Tennis great animation captures and gameplay, Roland Garros for the PC looks
pathetic by comparison and unrealistic) .
Unless you just want to be a anti-console snob, do yourself a favor and buy a
Dreamcast, it costs less than an average videocard and will outperform most Pc
gaming rigs.

Agreed. But I just wish someone would make a decent wheel for
the DC (or any console in fact). Driving with the standard
controller, or any of the toy-like wheels available renders
the physics model redundant in my opinion.
I've heard rumours of good wheels for PS2, which will make it
(and GT2000) worth buying perhaps.

driving game I have ever tried. But to really enjoy it as a sim,
it is mandatory to turn off the aids. Especially with autobrakes
and spin control turned on, it turns into a pure arcade game.
The problem is that a review of the DC F355 claimed that all
the aids are permanently enabled. If that is true, it puts
DC F355 at the wrong end of the arcade vs. sim scale imo.

Nope, you can toggle all of the aids. The first thing I did was go into
the options and set the default to no aids at all. Other than how it
handles collisions with walls (shouldn't be doing that anyway ;p ) it's
right up there with the best of the PC sims.

This game is making me lust after a decent steering wheel like the ACT LABS
wheel, which may suit my needs to upgrade my PC wheel as well as allow me to
use it for Dreamcast and more than likely PS2 at some point. GT2000 is going to
need more than a playstation controller for me to fully enjoy it.
act labs rs is a very good wheel, and its available for DC!

F355 truly is an outstanding game, easily the best racing game I've seen on
any console, far and away!
I'm not sure I would agree that the physics model is *quite* as demanding as
GPL, but it's as close to at as I've seen, computer or console. It's hard
to tell without a wheel, especially a force feedback wheel. The graphics
are wonderful; however, I'm not sure which I would call better. GPL's are
crisper, but F355's are more vibrant. I just wish you could see a bit more
of the steering wheel and instrument panel. It's nice that you can at least
see the steering wheel moving. It actually helps give control feedback!

You put it in perspective with that last statement! The Dreamcast cost half
of what I would have to pay to get a graphics card capable of running
F1-2000 at a decent frame rate with high detail, and it still might not look
as good as F355, and very likely wouldn't run at the frame rate that F355
maitains.
I've got to rectify my steering wheel situation now that this baby's out!

This sounds like the best solution for me. I have an ACT Labs RS
(non-force) - all I need is a DC cartridge, which I hear runs for about $20.
I wonder though, would F355 support force feedback in the sense that the ACT
Labs Force RS would be looking for?

True, there are 4 aids and each can be toggled on or off individually. With
them all off, it's learning curve is almost as tough as GPL's, from what I
can tell with the stock DC controller. I plan to rectify that - post haste!

Yep, it reminds me of the original "Wipeout" on the Playstation in that
regard... very disappointing, but you're right, you shouldn't be banging
Ferraris into walls!

Thanks for answering this rrevved! I ordered a DC cartridge last night for
my non-force RS. Can't wait to try it out. Just curious, to what did you
mount your Force RS for play with the DC? I'm just trying to envision
something that I can put mine on in front of the entertainment center where
my 27" color television is housed. Something that I can straddle my chair
with, yet easily roll or move away when not needed.

Yeah, it did me in, not to mention the fact that a much improved version of
F1WGP (F1 Championship Season 99) comes out later in October. Then we'll
have F1-2000 for the PS2, NASCAR 2001, and as you pointed out, GT 2000 for
the PS2. It's a no brainer that we'll see an ACT Labs cartridge for it as
well.

But if you buy a DC, VMU, and wheel for one game (F355), that's over $270.
For one title. A videocard will be useful for titles you already have as well
as future games. [though I question how much these new whiz-bang cards
actually do buy in current titles, but that's another debate]. Maybe they'll
be other DC titles you or I might be tempted to get, maybe not. For the
latter case, maybe better to compare DC/F355 to a weekend getaway vacation :-)
Still, F355 is tempting...

I think the A.I. in F355 is far far superior to that in Gran Tourismo, which
has very poor A.I. even by console racer standards. Gran Tourismo's saving
grace is its variety of cars, excellent car physics, and awesome replays.
Its A.I. cars are just in the way, backmarkers.
F355, on the other hand has good A.I. opponents, and superior car physics, but
awful replays and only one car to choose from.

I have to differ with you on this issue. I have Grand Turismo and F355, and
I find the feel of racing cars to be superior. I think the physics are a
little more accurate, but more importantly, seeing part of the dash and the
top third of a moving steering wheel helps sell the idea of piloting a
vehicle instead of astrally traveling down the track. I wish there was more
of the cockpit visible, but this is better than nothing at all. I still
have collisions that I don't know are coming because I can't see enough of
my board and hood.
As for AI, I'm impressed with F355. To me it's as good as GP3, if not
better. I won't say it's as good as GPL. It's just too bad it doesn't have
a damage model, but I think they put the emphasis in the right places for
the initial title. Maybe the next F355 will have a damage model, more
complete cockpit view, and a decent replay facility.

racing cars at all, much like the Gran Turismos. I am comparing to GP3

When I say the AI is bad F355, I mean all the cars are staggered,
like an arcade (which i guess it is). The cars do not race in tight
packs, but spread out, making it very boring. You still race them a
bit, but you just go by. I havent seen any pulling out maybe because
AI cars cant really bump you, you can push them anywhere you want.
I havent tried Championship yet, only single race, maybe thats my
problem.
I dont mind the one car, as long as it has good a physics engine
(which it does).

All aids can be disabled if desired (that's the way I drive it and it's
quite the sim under these conditions). The aids are fully
configurable, any combination can be chosen.
I'm patiently awaiting the arrival of my Dreamcast cartridge for my ACT
Labs RS - I'll come back with a full report once I've had a chance to
test it.
