Just got back from the track -- I was there for qualifying and the
Porsche Cup race; I left after the Porsche race, so I missed the
historic F1 cars on the track, and the Ferrari Challenge race, but all
in all, it was a GREAT day. The crowds seemed larger than they were
for the inaugural IROC race a couple of years back -- very much like I
remember Indy qualifying crowds in the late '80s and early '90s.
All in all, I think American fans are really quick to warm up to the F1
experience -- there were LOTS of European fans there (and quite a few
from Asia, as well), with lots of flags, etc., and the U.S. fans all
got into the spirit, and there were a lot of "oohs" and "aahs" when
Johnny Herbert spun in the first infield segment, and lots of cheering
and smiles all around when he did a snap-spin to get himself pointed
back in the right direction.
It was an AWESOME day for me, and I TRULY hope that F1 is here to stay
(at INDY, as well as in the U.S.).
Now, to get things back on-topic, from what I could see, I would have
to say that F1 2000 has the Indy track almost perfect. There were a
lot of in-car shots in the big-screen monitors, and it all looked just
like it does in F1 2000 on my monitor (and I even turn in similar
times -- down in the 1:14.xx range). The biggest discrepancy is the
1st turn area -- there are no cones or barricades there in real-life;
the entire Turn 4 area of the main track IS the runoff area for T1 on
the F1 circuit. Otherwise, everything looks spot-on.
Kudos to ISI on getting this one so VERY right, it seems!

Well... Day number one is complete at the US Grand Prix at Indianapolis,
writing this from my hotel room as we flew in for the race.
I was very surprised to find out just how accurate F1-2000 is to the real
thing! The car sounds, the lap times, the layout of the track, etc, etc....
I'm even more impressed than ever! Anyone else here in Indy for the race who
has/plays F1-2000 ?

I'll be there in two days, unless I skip out of watching the homecoming
football game tomorrow.

I'll be there tomorrow. The only question I have about the F1 2000
track layout, is the pit entrance. I keep going into the pits from
the main straight. This is clearly wrong :-)
I liked the fact that they named 2 of the turns already. Turns 9 & 10
were called Mickey & Mouse by the Fox sports guys. I don't think
Derek Bell liked it. They said it was like turning in a parking garage.
Also I think it is lame that the Chicago area is pretty much blacked out
for the race. The tape will be shown at 5pm CDT. Totally bogus. But
practice and qualifying is live...

I have been driving the heck out of the Indy track in F1 2000 in
preparation for Sunday's race, and my times are right in-line with
today's practice times, so I guess I will be in contention for Juan
Montoya's seat at Williams next season . . . <G>

No, but maybe I should hang out around the paddock area on race

ALL the ISI guys were in town - I sat with
them :)
BTW, if you aren't turning at least low 1:10's,
you'll have to get behind me for that Williams
ride!

You evil, evil man! <G>
We're going to have to get together sometime, given that we're both
here in Indy. Any more LAN parties at SJKC planned for the near
future, by chance? Speaking of which, do you know John Combs, and if
so, do you know what he's up to these days?

Yeah, they ought to fix that. Remove the concrete blocks and let's go racing
on the entire oval!

That WOULD be a blast, wouldn't it? I wonder why none of the track
editing gurus haven't taken this task on yet?

Hmmm . . . you weren't in the Tower Terrace area, in Section 76, near

I'm nowhere near the 1:10's, so you might have a lock on the Williams
ride -- my best so far is in the 1:14.xx range, which is at least close
to what the real F1 guys did on the real track. <G>

So do things look bright for F1 2001?
I thought I looked pretty good doing 1:14s prior
to watching those guys for three days. No Williams
ride for me yet!
