Do framerates affect lap times? After getting back into GPL, I can't run
anywhere close to where I used to be a year ago. Of course, I can't just step
back in and be quick again, but it seems wierd to me that I can drive my car
on the limit around a track, and not be even close to where I used to be.
What has me thinking it might have to do with framerates is the new TNT2 Ultra
I've purchased since then. I was using a 3dfx V2 card, and getting 30+ fps
before. Now with the TNT2 card, I'm averaging around 20fps with the D3D patch.
Just for fun I turned off all the graphics and ran in 640x480 and it only
improved about 4fps. Is 3dfx that much better for this game, or am I missing
something with the TNT2?

Well since the game was built around 3dfx and rendition, I would assume the
3dfx support is much better than the add on patches to make other cards
work...And yes, the frame rates effect lap times. Not only are response
times changed, but the physics model doesnt seem to run as cleanly at less
than 36 fps. The handling is much better if you can get it to run constant
36fps.

I went back an installed the V2 card, and sure enough, 36fps all around and
much better handling. I'm still outta pratice, but being able to control the
slides and such much better already had an immediate improvement on my times.

You don't mention what processor your using but I suspect you have something
wrong somewhere. I'm using TNT2 non ultra, P3 550, D3D patch, Sound Blaster
Value, and I get a solid 36fps everywhere but at starts at 1024*768 with some
graphics turned off. Turn off all textures and show cars only in mirrors, and
turn off the two lighting effects, they are major fps hogs.

First, it's strange that the TNT2 does so bad. Perhaps you've also
bought an MSFF wheel and turned on force feedback. That makes a
difference as well.
Other than that, yes, FPS makes a difference quite probably to your
times. Probably the controllers are polled only once per drawn frame.
This way you get less input (and less visual input to respond to), so
this will indeed be bad for your times. Although ofcourse they *could*
have made it so the controller polling was always at the same
frequency.

3Dfx is more native to GPL. However, with the D3D patch, this
shouldn't be the case anymore.
Also look at any patches you installed; the GPLEA wheels are nice, for
example, but cost some fps.
