Danny Sullivan's Indy Heat! God, me and my friends used to pump quarters into
this one like mad. It only came to my mind, because I just found it for MAME
recently. Geez, that brings back memories. Any of you have a favorite old
arcade racer??
Favourite old arcade and early racing games

My absolute earliest memory was this Atari game (can't remember the name,
can anyone help?) that had little cars and a viewpoint from above and had
several selectable tracks and could be played head-to-head.
There was this great track that was like this

All you did was pin the accelerator and spin the wheel (wheel went all the
way around) as fast as you could one way then the other. The car would
perfectly slice around the corners.

Same here with Pole Position at arcades and at home, as well as Hard Drivin'
and Spy Hunter (ok not a driving game in the classic sense lol)
Hell I used to do racing BOARD games. Anyone else remember the old Avalon
Hill Indy 500 and the Grand Prix one, I wanna say Speed Circuit ? The Indy
500 game really made me appreciate the scoring in pre-computer times hehe.

I also had a lot of fun with Stunt Track Racer on the C64, though that
wouldn't be categorized as a sim.
Actually I still have the disks for the C64, though the cpu died long ago.

Yup! That's the HO racing I remember! Crap, I just gave my age away! hehe.

| That's not way back. When I first started Aurora HO racing, thecontroller
| looked like a dashboard with a steering wheel to control speed. The tireswere
| about one millimeter wide and appeared to be punched out of a bicycleinner

Anybody remember Enduro for the Atari 2600? It was night driving game (simialr
to Atari's Night Driver). You basically had approaching headlights coming at
you in regular patterns that you had to avoid, but they came faster and faster.
I guess that was stare-of-the-art back then.
A former co-worker of mine also had "Turbo" for the Colecovision, which used a
wheel and pedals. This was back in the mid 80's. That's goin' back some now.

That was my first "sim", on the Amiga. I remember there was one crazy Japanese
AI driver. He would always stall getting off the grid at Interlagos, causing a
pile-up. You had a choice of a Willilams, a Ferrari, or a McLaren, if I
remember correctly.

I had an Avalon Hill board game called "Le Mans". It had the Le Mans circuit
as well as Monaco drawn on the infield. You had cards for each make of car
(Cooper, Jaguar, etc.) that told you how many spaces you could move in the
various gears, the braking characteristics, etc. If you tried to go real fast
into the corner (using "hard braking"), you rolled dice to see if you made it.
If you crashed, you then put little markers indicating the corner was now
wet/oily for the next guy, which would increase his chances of wiping out. I
loved that game! Unfortunately, my mom must have given it away (along with a
small fortune in baseball cards).

Have you ever driven a real F1 car? How do you know that that's not accurate? ;-)
