I was watching the Papy demos in GPL, and I noticed that some lift the throttle when shifting, and some don't(Kaemmer and Arnao). First when I got the game I left the throttle floored when I speedshifted, but thought it maybe weren't that healthy and started relearning to shift without "screams". :) What seems to be the standard out there? Is keeping the pedal to the metal faster? Seems a bit like like cheating to me if it is... /Magnus GPLRank: +3.96

Interesting about Kaemmer and Arnao. I just left off the gas (to say 50% throttle) and then reapply during a gear shift. I'm on a hotlap I might keep it open. But that doesn't always work :) ----------- http://surf.to/speedyfast26
Keeping the pedal down while shifting will eventually blow your engine. If you're doing a hotlap and are using Novice mode, it won't blow your engine and is a little faster, that's why they do it. Cheers, ...Colin "Magnus Svensson" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

It's faster not lifting. But unless you're hot-lapping or running very short races, you'll end up blowing your engine. Trust me. I blew a lot of them that way early on. ;-) So it's not really cheating, there *is* a price to pay. -- Chuck Kandler Windows--computing for the Unwashed Masses Registered Linux User #180746 http://counter.li.org
Lift pedal slightly until at 50% rpm. Hit clutch and shift. Hit throttle. This way, you won't blow the engine, if driving in the Grand Prix mode. "Magnus Svensson" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

I learned the hard way... I did novice races offline a lot and used clutch to change gear, without lifting... Online however, these things do not help, I found I blew the engine at least 3-4 times a race, if not more.... So I just lift the gas as a flip my gear change paddle - its a smooth change, no need for the clutch (as the gear change keeps the engine at same speed) and it keeps my speed OK against others...although I'm a newbie - I didnt think there was enough info about actual driving technique - not how to drive the car as in sliding, etc. - Just techniques on how to literally drive it - how to start (clutch, etc.) how to change gear effectivly, etc. Cya later - hope this helps -- Phil. Anyone hotlapping seems keep their foot to the floor as it means the revs don't drop, thus should save a few tenths. Anyone doing an actual race will need to lift or the engine will go kaboom. The correct way to do it is lift but you'll get 5-6 laps without a blow up for hotlapping. I've been practising my lifting technique and it has greatly improved. I used to lift fully, change gear, floor throttle....loads of time lost! Now I keep it floored and change gear. Just as he drivers arm reaches across lift 1/4 of the way and floor it.... the revs are kept really high and no kick back from the wheels.

You need to find a balance between speed and reliability. Keeping your foot to the floor when shifting will certainly keep your acceleration up, but your engine isn't likely to last very long using this method. It's fine for qualifying, where every second counts, but in a long race you can sacrifice a little acceleration to keep your car running for longer, especially on those circuits which require lots of shifting. I've found it best to not remove my foot entirely from the pedal when shifting, but instead to lift it just enough that the revs don't rise to the red line. Keep practising and you'll soon find the perfect method for you, which as far as I'm concerned is a little different for all of us. Best regards, Moon-Watcher
