GP3 - a few grumbles.

I really enjoyed the previous GP games but GP3 has a few probs and the graphics are so glitchy as to annoy the hell out of me. If you just sit still on the grid you can see the textures wobbling, warping and popping in and out. Z buffering seems problematic at best. You can see cars through the fences and roadway, and also buildings that should be in the distance show through too. Trees, crowds and tyre barriers are so blocky as to appear they were lifted from some upcoming N64 version. The overuse of sprites rather than true 3D objects gives an overall sort of 'Captain Pugwash' effect. The graphics would be alright if they just fixed all the glitches. Frame rate also appears to limited by the game, rather than the CPU/Vid card, as FPS still look to be around 20-25fps while CPU occupancy is showing as low as 30% on a 1 Ghz machine. The AI cars barge you off the road and run into the back of you even when you clearly have the line for the corner. They just move onto the line whether your there or not. If you spin out the AI cars then relentlessly bump into you like a horde of five year olds in dodg'em cars. I know this really no worse than most racing games but I expected more from GP3. I guess if you love GP racing GP3 is hardcore but for occassional racers like me, there are better racing games.

Be advised: That patch REALLY hosed things up on my AMD K6-2 system with a 16 MB Voodoo Banshee card. I had to revert back to the GP3 game default setting (25 fps) in order to even get it to run at all; with the patch, I was getting better performance in software mode -- it was just plain unplayable when I pushed the fps setting up to 30 (I can run GPL at a constant 36 fps with no problem). I believe it does work well with higher-end systems (Pentiums, Athlons, Celerons, and such), but on my K6-2 system, the game became unplayable. -- JB Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.

If you're interested you can download a patch to fix it at 30-something and higher framerates. JoH

1 GHz P3 w/ GeForce2 64mb should cover it, I hope :) Just where do I find the patch though? (sorry to sound ignorant). -Deckard
