Options.cfg file - please read this Ed Martin

NASCAR Heat's hidden hardcore mode and install paths

Vintook asked Ed Martin to document the options.cfg settings. Ed said hardcore mode and vertex damage were unsupported options for the daring, left documentation to the community, and agreed hardcore was hidden so average players could feel competent on Expert. Users objected to hiding it and to the installer putting files on C: regardless of the chosen directory, which Jan Loebzien partly worked around.

First of all, great game. Maybe I missed a file somewhere but I can't find anything talking about hardcore mode. I knew how to enable it by reading this newsgroup but how is the average non-newsgroupie player going to know about this option? Can you please make available a readme file that lists all the parameters in the options.cfg file and the options you can change and post it to a web site somewhere? All us game tweakers are dying to fiddle, I just like to know what I can fiddle with without trial and error and game crashes. Vintook

Hardcore, like vertex damage is an unsupported feature. It exists in the options.cfg for the "daring" that want to turn it on at their own risk. That pretty much includes everyone here. :-) "Vintook" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:v9hp5.5229$[email hidden]...

what other options are there that are not supported? Also what I originally wanted was to know what each supported option was for and what I can set each to. Like is there a way to set damage other than the vertex option that makes the car damage easier. Vintook "Ed Martin" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:9Qhp5.44512$[email hidden]...

is there something wrong with hardcore, that the general masses should be protected from? Will it crash more? Is there a bug? If not then why are you hiding it? Just because someone doesn't read r.a.s. or even do anything on the web, doesn't mean they don't want to race on the most realistic level. The hardcore mode should enabled by default in the first patch. (easy enough just update the options file. Ed Martin <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:9Qhp5.44512$[email hidden]...

There are some web sites out there that have started posting what option does what. I have to leave that up to the community. :-) FYI, though, vertex is the only "type" of damage. LOL, you sure know how to make the 'reading between the lines' a damn sight more informative than reading whats 'actually' written :) Ever considered Politics? Maybe something along the lines of 'Spin Doctor' Freeburn. (NH-less coz the lamers here in the UK just don't *get* NASCAR) Ed Martin wrote:

I think they did this so the average person, after racing for a while, can be pretty good at expert level and feel that he/she is a great driver, so they won't be frustrated. Let THEM think their the best :) Then the hardcore mode is for people like us that expect the most realistic physics and real world parameters for grip, gravity, etc. I think Hasboro is smart for doing this. Making the average person think their the best, yet not forgeting about us hardcore simmers. (therefore hardcore mode) Though I wish the cars were a bit more easily damaged and the other cars and you would spin easier on contact. Sometimes you can even use them as walls :) But of course, everything else is superb. Seems unlikely that the "non-newsgroup novices" out there are going to be searching those sites for patches though... And truely, they shouldn't have to for something as trivial as this. In article <8o4er0$vas$[email hidden]>, [email hidden] wrote:

We weren't born with the God-given knowledge of this newsgroup, and of all the various sites on the Web where we've downloaded various setups, patches, add-ons, converters . . . How logical is it to think that only people who read r.a.s. or keep current on all the web-sites want to race at the realistic level? All those other fools think their on the hardest level... haha we all know better... Having hardcore available isn't going to scare anyone away. neither will having to control your own speed in the pits if you so wish. Why hide it? Why hide it? Why hide it? I totally agree with multiple difficulty levels, but keeping it a secret accomplishes nothing in my opinion. Yep, your fault for being honest and paying for a game you want, should have stolen it right from the start huh? What is it with that kind of thinking? Seems like if you don't like a game, you either don't buy it based on reports, take it back if you have already bought it, if you can, shelf it and hope a patch comes out later, or sell it and chalk up your losses. Why do folks try to justify stealing by saying it isn't worth buying? If it's bad, seems like you wouldn't want in anyway. Forgive me if I'm wrong on this as being in the UK I haven't yet got hold of the full game yet. However, from what others appear to be saying I don't understand this need to hide things either. Is the options.cfg supposed to be editable or not by those who play the game if they choose to? Or is the only editable feature supported by MGI the setting of the hardcore mode? If it is the former then I don't understand why they are being so secretive about this. What's the purpose of having all these extra little editable goodies for us to play with and then not letting us know what it is that they all do. Surely the information about this would be better coming from MGI (the horse's mouth) than expecting people to play guessing games with how they work.

Guess it's a case of "Never say never" here ... :-) I managed to make the game store all but one (tiny) file at the drive of your choice. Unfortunately for now you have to use the default \Hasbro ... folder though (but not on C: !) I also finally sat down and got past my "Hello World" attempts in C++, so I created a little program called "NASCAR Heat Install Location Fix" (or NHILF) to patch the appropriate file (which is race.bin in the \run folder btw). As you can see by the version number, there is plenty room for improvement. If anyone is bold enough to try it out, please don't hesitate to send any feedback! LOL those Hello World rograms can be a killer but I reckon its the Temperature Converters that sort the men out from the boys... On Sat, 02 Sep 2000 08:39:27 +0200, Jan Loebzien <[email hidden]> wrote:
