as a humble suggestion, i can tell you that i'm very happy with having an
older voodoo2 pci (which i can essentially keep forever) which works
extremely well with my older sims, along with a GeForce2 in an AGP slot.
this seems like just about the best of both worlds to me, and isn't as
expensive as you might think (a V2 12MB can be had for like $30 nowadays,
and- to me at least- is just about as good in the older sims as a V3, etc.).
it does seem that for the newest stuff (written for D3D) and future titles
(which will presumably take advantage of the GeForce's hardware T&L, etc.),
the GeForce is the way to go, especially if you play things other than
racing sims.
good luck

I have the chance to trade a GeForce-2 32 meg card for a Voodoo-5 5500. I
have a Athlon-800, should I make this trade? Is the V5 5500 better for
racing sims? I don't want to start a videocard debate just want to hear from

Thanks,

What sims do you play? V5 is a solid choice for glide games such as GPL. I
have a V5 and find the FSAA outstanding for N3, GPL NH, GP3 and NFSPU. FSAA
is equally impressive in flight sims and less taxing on your system. I'm a
V5 fan and highly recommend it. You really must see FSAA in action to
appreciate it, screen shots are worthless.

I run all of those (should have NH & GP3 tomorrow). Others are GP500,
SB2000, SCGT, TOCA2
F12000, Viper Racing, MGPRS2 and more. Hmm can't really make up my mind.
Maybe I'll try the V5 first.
Thanks,
Sal V.

We can only recomend based on our
preferences. the newest Geforce2 is supposed to be slightly faster than a
V5. But I think the difference in sims isn't much. Somebody recently
posted an FSAA shot of NH with a geforce. I was suprised. I had heard the
FSAA on the Gee's was bad...this was pretty good. BUT he never mentioned
the framerate he acheived with that shot...so IF you can test a V5
first,...that is a good plan.
I think most people who start with one brand, tend to like the visual
quality of that card more than the competiton. Not that either is bad, it
is just we get used to way things look and if something comes across as
different...we often
don't appreciate that difference.
For OLDER sims...a V5 is a slam dunk...for newer sims....the Gee might be
better....ymmv

I've owned both cards and prefer the V5 because I play mostly sims and
like the FSAA on the V5.

I read every review I could find about Voodoo 5500 and GeForce 2.
I ended up buying a Voodoo 5500. Why? I'm not quite sure. I would like
to say it is the FSAA, but I played F12000 with it on and with it off, and I
would much rather have high framerates than get rid of the funny look on the
fences and stuff.
In a way, I wish I had gotten the GeForce 2.
To be honest, the final decision was that the Voodoo 5500 comes with a DVD
software player... at least that's what 3Dfx made me think. I was extremely
disappointed to find a piece of paper that I can fill out and send it in to
'possibly' get my DVD software in 4-6 weeks. I was so pissed at this, that
if Best Buy allowed returns, I would have taken the 5500 back and gotten my
money back.

Now... If you had a 64 meg GeForce2 GTS, that would be another story!

F12K is acutally a bit better on the Geforce2. But, I play many types
of games and not just racing sims. FSAA is very playable on all of my
flight sims.

It's 64mb total, but there are two graphics chips on the V5 so each
one gets 32mb. Games and Windows will only see it as 32mb. I wish it
was 64mb because then I would get better performance using 4X FSAA.

This is totally true, the V5 5500 AGP can only load 32 MB of discrete
(different) textures since both chips need their own copy. 64 MB of
physical RAM, but you can only fit 32 MB of textures onto it.

Computer hardware is 14 days ...
I've got 13 more days to decide between the Hercules Prophet II MX
(GeForce 2 MX) (that I got at CompUSA) and the Voodoo 3 3000 AGP
(Best Buy) ...
So far the only negative I see with the Herc is that there is no TV
output whereas the Voo Doo 3 has it.
(I'm open to others' experiences here ...)

Actually, both of you guys are lucky. Where I am (Albany, NY), we
must be a bunch of low-lifes who return too much hardware, because all
of the local stores (CompUSA, Best Buy, even the shiny new Circuit
City) have a 15% restocking fee on returned, non-defective hardware.
You might as well buy mail-order or on the 'net if you have to pay
that. Unless its the superior service and technical support we're
paying extra for... Yeah, right! ;)

... Knowing my luck ... I'd be stuck with a board I'm not using and
I'd have to go and buy a computer to go with it. :-)
