Re: Should I get GPL with the hardware I have got?

Nope, the ultimate graphics board for this guy is a Verite 2X00. Thriller or Stealth II, if he can still find it. This plays GPL WAY, WAY better than a first generation Voodoo card, as it uses DMA instead of FIFO. I think GPL would be playable on his computer with a rendition board,as these boards are made for lower end machines. In fact, I think that the only way of getting fps out of a AMD K6 233Mhz would be with a 2nd gen Rendition card. ---Asgeir--- [email hidden] wrote:

I was just working on the assumption that a first-generation Voodoo card would be easier to find than a 2x00 Rendition board. As I said, GPL ran fine on my K6-233 with a Canopus Pure3D Voodoo board. The V1000 Rendition cards are simply insufficient, but I don't recall if I ever tried GPL with my Stealth II S220 V2100 card. Thanks for reminding us about the 2x00 Rendition boards, though! -- JB In article <[email hidden]>, Asgeir Nesoen <[email hidden]> wrote: > Nope, the ultimate graphics board for this guy is a Verite 2X00.Thriller or > Stealth II, if he can still find it. > > This plays GPL WAY, WAY better than a first generation Voodoo card,as it > uses DMA instead of FIFO. > > I think GPL would be playable on his computer with a renditionboard,as > these boards are made for lower end machines. GPL is really not worth driving seriously unless you can get a pretty solid 36fps because of the way the physics engine is synched with the display. otherwise, you're really not getting all of the feedback you're supposed to be getting, and the experience will seem inconsistent. it's a whole different game at 36fps, really! if i were you, i'd try the demo and see what you can get. there are several upgrades that should only set you back a few $ (25? 50?) - already suggested by other posters- that you can probably make. i would definately see what the fastest processor that will fit in your motherboard is- you might be surprised how inexpensive a new CPU that is not on the cutting edge is. i know an AMD K6-2 500 is like $55, if that will work with your motherboard... good luck. Hi all, Just a quick question: I am about to get a LWFF wheel because it's currently on special. I'd like to be able to experience driving nirvana with GPL. However, my system is not yet upgraded from what I have got 3 yrs ago. It is an AMD 200, 64 MB RAM with a ET6000 2D card. I know that a 3D accellerator is recommended and that although GPL doesn't demand the highest spec machine, can GPL run in 2D software mode (with force feedback) at a reasonable frame rate for me to start practicing. I am prepared to switch all details off and run at whatever the lowest 2D resolution is (? 320x200). It's just that I am about to go on a full year backpacking trip around the world and don't want to upgrade my computer, otherwise I'd have to pack it away in about 4 months time (and coming back to find it again obsolete ;-)) One more question. If 2D software mode is going to be so slow, will the use of an S3 Virge 2D-3D card (yes I know, it's old and it's slow - but I can borrow one off a friend) be good enough? Thanks all for your time. Cheers.

I would guess no. Why not download the demo? Then you'll know for sure. Joe McGinn _____________________ Radical Entertainment
I would worry about your perception of GPL. When I tried to run it on an MMX-200, I found it so incredibly difficult, it was not fun. I actually shelved it for a few months until I bought a PIII-500. What a difference. GPL has consumed me ever since. Definately wait til you get some sort of real 3d card. I would pay attention to the ebay site and many users will be unloading the 3dfx V3 and TNT2's...either of those "should" work well. dave henrie "Vudoo" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:8nvfac$5et$[email hidden]... > Hi all, > > Just a quick question: > > I am about to get a LWFF wheel because it's currently on special. When I first got GPL, I had an AMD K6-233 system with a 4 MB Intergraph V1000 Rendition card and a 6 MB Canopus Pure3D Voodoo I add-on card. GPL supports both Rendition and Voodoo chipsets, but I got HORRIBLE frame rates with the V1000 card; the Voodoo was much better, but GPL didn't come into its own until I overclocked my system to 266 MHz. With a 300 MHz AMD K6 system it was great, and on my current 400 MHz K6 machine, it just plain rocks. I get 7-9 fps on a PPro-180 + 64mb + 2mb Matrox non-3D card with all the details except horizon and wall textures turned off. It seems quite drivable in solo (witness my GPLRank times!), but racing is completely out of the question. I'm hoping to get a (free) P-III upgrade soonish, but til then I'm continuing driving on that hardware. +Cinquo
My P2 333 struggles with a TNT 2 using D3D and is even worse with open GL. For an AMD 200 I would definitely recommend a Voodoo2 or 3 for GPL, even then though the performance will be less than ideal :( GPL in software mode on a 200Mhz PC will be pretty much unplayable. My old P166 was terrible in software and not much better using a Voodoo 1 (I think the Intel 166 is close to the AMD 200 in performance) If you really want GPL on that PC I'd try and get an old rendition card. Estimates of framerates in training at 640 x 480 with only required graphics on Software : 6fps TNT2 OGL : 8 fps TNT2 D3D : 12 fps Voodoo2 : 22 fps Rendition : 30 fps Remember that GPL maxes out at 36fps and you need close to that to get anywhere near the playability the game requires to be enjoyable, preferably a solid 36fps. These are going from previous experience and memory (which isn't as good as it used to be) -- Ian P <email invalid due to spam> Dave Henrie <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:O_Io5.18198$[email hidden]... > Definately wait til you get some sort of real 3d card. Try and get a K6-III especially...if you can use one of those, it should work great - K6-2s have no built in L2 cache, while all K6-IIIs have 256 of full-clock L2 on the chip (and the mobo's goes to L3). Frys has a deal where you get a FIC-VA503+ board and a K6-III 333 (yes it really is a K6-III, it has 256K of L2 cache and the board is a 1MB cache board) for $75 and it overclocks easy 380 at 2.2 (standard on the elusive 333...most/all other K6-IIIs run 2.4, so I imagine this thing will overclock even more with a bit more volts!) Take just about 30 bucks and get a voodoo2 card that will slap into a pci slot and co-exists with your current video card... this is the best option for you , it will make the game usable on even your 200... I ran it on my 233, & now on my celery 400... don't try huge fields of cars but medium to better scenery will make the braking points and a lot of stuff easier to pick out!!! good luck ... you will want to find the card at a price wizard like http://www.pricewatch.com/ "Vudoo" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:8nvfac$5et$[email hidden]... > Hi all, > > Just a quick question: > > I am about to get a LWFF wheel because it's currently on special. Hey, since you were not wanting to "expect" much, just to play for a while, you really should consider the voodoo2 card that is an add on card that you could take to the **NEW** computer or at least make the old computer like a new machine for so many games! I will definitely keep my voodoo card just for Simulation games for a long time before I will shell out 250 bucks for a video card again.... Example my buddy just got a new cheapo 500.00 dollar E-Machine... and my other buddy bought a compact for 2300.00 six months earlier, neither machine would play gpl for sh*t until I equipped them with a Diamond Monster 2 12 meg card that went into the pci slot and only is bypassed until needed for gaming... now the e-machine and the 2300 dollar Compact are equal in the game IMHO and VERY playable! pick one up for 30- 50 bucks, play it NOW! Plus the value of your machine is higher if your kid or a friend who admires your machine over your shoulder sees it running any of the 3dfx supported Sims (almost every game out until now)!!! Only reason to get the rendition card would be if you specifically wanted to run SODA OFF-ROAD (sierra) or Nascar2 (sierra) because they had native Rendition support! so my old system was: a p233 (1)Thriller (rendition 2d-3dcard) and (1)voodoo2 12meg monster (secondary-- 3dfx supporting card, used for most all other games including Nascar3) again I restate, less than 50 will make your machine seem like a 200 to 400 dollars in upgrades to you!! I have been trying to find one of these second generation Rendition cards. I have a connection at UBid, but they haven't gotten any in for sometime. So that leaves EBay...and man does EBay suck. But I really want the type of setup that you are talking about, it would also allow N2, and ICR2 to be run in a more "native" environment. So if anyone gets a good line on these cards, please let me know. From the Rendition Site. (Which is still being updated...and they haven't done anything in months... Papy's site has been dead for a month....) These are the cards that have the second edition Rendition chip. That is true, but a Voodoo3 PCI can also be picked up used for about 50, and that is a even better card. It really kicks GPL in the butt, and is good enough to put other games to life too. Sadly, after I managed to overclock my Cel566 to 850 MHz the trusty V3 3000 AGP is starting to be a serious bottleneck and I can't affort a V5 yet. The upwards spiral shows no mercy :) -- Olav K.
