The only sensible time to pause in GPL is on a long straight, maximum
throttle, steering wheel centered. If you're pausing while making a
difficult manoeuvre, or in other words while executing input changes, then
you deserve to be thrown into a wall. :-)
Bendito;
Why saving mid-race is hard to implement
Tim Wheatley argued the save-game outcry was overblown, pointing out GPL has no save either. Others explained why mid-race saves are technically difficult: saved replays are large, the full physics state of every car would need storing, and non-deterministic simulations complicate restoring. Opponents maintained it should have been designed in from the start.

Well said...
I honestly can't believe some peoples attitudes anymore. Let's face it folks,
we are talking about a freaking game here. A simple computer game that costs no
more then fifty bucks!!! Don't get me wrong, I enjoy playing racing sims as
much as anyone else. However, there are much more important things in this
world then a GAME. I can't believe people are going nuts over a feature that
was left out, it's not the end of the world!!! Back 8 or 9 years ago, when
"Indianapolis 500: The Simulation" came out, did we complain because we could'nt
save the darn game? No, we were happy with what we had...
For all of the people who have nothing better to do but complain, if these sims
are so important to you, why don't you get off your butts and go by a go-kart
or a legends car and do some real racing.

Also, all you who proclaimed this the greatest NASCAR sim ever (which it is)
are now calling it crap, a 'game' an arcade game?
No savegame feature makes a sim an arcade game?
Go back to playing N2 for godsake and enjoy the wonder which I once enjoyed.
I used to love racing on TEN using the demo version, racing with you guys.
But you've all changed so much, RAS has changed so much, it's become nothing
but full of people who seem to make posts, which if they read them in a
weeks time they'd laugh at. I laugh at quite a few of the posts on here,
simply because of their total stupidity, it really is so stunning to see so
many people with such two faced, backstabbing, idiotic views.
There are occasionally some helpful posts, many of which are helpful, and
many of which are amusing for the right reasons, I just with there were
more.
I just read a post by John Simmons, he ran the first league I ever joined,
which was a GPL league, but the guy HATES open wheelers, he ran it because
GPL was the best sim available, and no NASCAR sim compared, and now we have
one that does compare, you guys flame it? I am no big NASCAR fan, infact I'd
rather watch an F1 race from the 80's that I've seen 10's of times before.
But I can respect both it, and those who are fans of it, I will watch it,
and respect every one of those guys out there risking their lives for
something they enjoy.
Sim racing is widespread, it includes many arcade games, do none of you
remember how stunning some of those arcade games were the first time you
played them? Do you not remember 'feeling' that "Revs" was realistic? And
what a piece of crap that looks like now... Can't you just respect a sim for
what it is? Rather than scouring the damn thing for the TINIEST little thing
which you can whinge and moan about?
The F10 argument for example....... --------- WHY!?! --------
Give it a bloody rest! The physics are the same, inside and outside of the
cars, it changes nothing, ok you can 'see more' but that's only until you
learn the tracks, then it's probably a disadvantage! I simply cannot believe
some of the arguments I read on here, no respect for real racers, no respect
for sim racers, and sure as hell no respect for each other.....
There, flame this all you bloody want.

If you want to do 100% races, press pause then alt-tab and come back to it
later, it's perfectly simple, to be honest you could also try a 'shorter'
race.
But guess all this is too hard to work out, which is why I need explain it.

Some people have the privilege of having enough time to be able to run a
full race altogether or even in the one day but the simple fact is that most
folks don't. Meaning they're forced to race short races.
As an example, think of a married man with young kids. He might not have
tons of time to race every day, yet he'd like the excitement of running a
full race at the Nurburgring. He can't do it, he'd be racing 20-30 minutes
every day or two if he could be he can't, he'll just have to run a short
race instead.
Same thing for NASCARS sims as a full length NASCAR race can often go on for
a hell of a long time.
Some have loads of time on their hands and good for them but most don't. No
save game feature is disappointing in this manner.
The answer isn't "oh, well don't bother racing 100% races then". They should
be able to IMO.

well actually it can be incredibly difficult. Ed has said time and again
that they looked at it and it was too difficult to implement at this time.
They didnt leave it out on a whim, it was too hard to do within the time
constraints of the release.

I saved a 6
lap Daytona race and it was 3.6 mb. That was less than 5 minutes of racing.
A 2 hour race would probably be 87 mb. That's a lot of disk space, but also
a lot of memory being used up. Might crash some computers. It would probably
take quite a bit of reprogramming to change the way the game saves.
On the other hand, this might have nothing to do with it at all ;)

Indeed Slot... you can't compare saving game status (i.e. savegame) with
saving a replay (saving all that's gone before). At least not size-wise.
Then again, if your game is not totally deterministic (i.e. if it won't run
in exactly the same way each time given the same starting parameters),
savegames can be nothing short of hellish to implement.

It is difficult now to implement because it must be implemented in the games
code from its infancy. Why? Because the whole games revolves around this
feature. We save paintjobs, replays, season statistics, setups. What would you
guys think if we couldnt do that either? Bet you wouldnt think it so irrelevant
then..LOL
That's my thinking - it *sounds* simple enough to just stop where you're at,
write all the data to disk as a savefile - then reload it and start up where
you left off. Depending on how they store position data for the cars on the
track and how all that interfaces with the physics engine - it could be
horrendous to implement without having really, really weird stuff happening
when you restore a game.
And that would have folks bitching more than having NO savegame I'm sure....

Well...I'm not completely anal about it so I guess I'll let it go this
time and buy the game when it comes out here in Canada. :-) At least
now I think they will incorporate that feature into their next sim.
And when they do you can thank people like me for making an issue out

That's a pretty weird way to look at it. When we save setups and
paintjobs, we're not hurtling down a track within inches of the other
drivers. Your comparison doesn't make any sense at all.

Facts are, gpl can alter the direction of a car just by pausing
mid-accident. Shouldn't someone ask Papy if N4 will have a save feature? I
very much doubt it. Being paused mid calculation is going to throw any
realistic physics engine wildly off par...
Personnally I'd prefer not to be throw into a wall or something every time I
restart a race. :-)

You mean saving a few colors and textures isn't the same as saving the
precise speed, location, condition and position of 43 cars? I don't get it
;-).

Makes perfect sense. You're saving bytes of game info either way. Just
differing types of info.

Yeah, but you went from (a) 'in an accident' to (b) 'being thrown into a
wall every time you restart a race'. So how did you get from a to b in
such a short period of time.

The only time you should be allowed to save is while stopped in your pit
stall.
