I know this is a techie question, but here goes. I have a ASUS P2B 440 BX
motherboard with a PII 400 chiponit, what is the fastest PIII I can upgrade
to? Thanks.

I've got the same MB and according to the ASUS website, P3/600 Katmai. Call
them up and check your revision number. Some of the boards (newer revisions
can take the Coppermine)

I went to their site and to the following page
http://www.asus.com/Products/Techref/chipset/p3cpu.html
It shows the P2B as being capable of the 800mhz, I had to upgrade my BIOS.
It says it must have a PCB Revision of R1.03 or later. I have no idea what
that is. Also, are all PIII 800's coppermine? I will also need to adjust
some jumper settings for a 800 chip. I guess I'll have to call about the
PCB thing. Thanks.

Yes, all 800's are "Coppermines", and no, I don't think you need to
adjust any jumpers really as the multiplier is locked and ignore that
anyway and the FSB of the 400 and 800 is the same, but that's a minor
issue anyway
Make sure you contact ASUS directly as the info found on manufacturers
websites are often outdated/incorrect
I may remember wrong here, but I *think* that the P2B with 4 memory
slots, the earlier ones had 3, are of the revision you talk about, but
it's been a while since I had my hands on a P2B, great card though,
there was also a revision of the card that came with one extra jumper
for FSB speed settings, it had 4 instead of the usual 3, again this is
from memory
Beers and cheers

Thanks.i think you looked in the wrong row, for the P2B it says R1.12 or later to
support the latest PIII with the use of an adapter card. To see which
revision you have, open up the case of your pc and look for "P2B" printed in
fairly big letters on the mother board. On my board it is in between 2 ISA
slots. Below the "P2B" is the revision level. Mine is only R1.04, so no
Coppermine cpu's for me on this board. But there are certainly stores still
selling Slot 1 Pentium III's, and they should work with the P2B provided you
upgrade the Bios, see
http://www.asus.com/Products/Techref/Cpu/Intel/piii-suprt.html
Bios upgrades are also available from the Asus site, see
http://www.asus.com/Products/software1.html
