For about the same price you can get a retail FC-PGA PIII 700E or a
Celeron II 600 with alpha fan, guaranteed to hit 900Mhz at 1.75 volts.
Which one would be faster in NH?
Whichever CPU I get I think I will combine with a 3D Prophet MX or
Leadtek dual-head Geforce MX. Any thoughts on the Geforce MX?
I am going this route because I plan to milk the old BH6 1.01 with 196MB
of CL2 PC100, until I can get a DDR motherboard and DDR memory.
I will not buy more non-DDR memory or motherboards. I'm hearing DDR will
make around a 30% improvement with the same CPU.
I recently had the same questions. Went ahead a purchased the P3-700e
slot1. Although it worked fine I wasnt really happy about the "overclocking
capability" of this chip on a BX based mobo (100MHz FSB). Just for the fun
of it I went out to Fry's (15 day refund) and picked up a celery2-566 FC-PGA
and an Abit slotkitIII (rev .81) converter. Threw the fan on it stuffed it
into the slotkit (default settings) fired up my system (BX6 v1 mobo) as
100MHz fsb, 8.5x multiplier and bam 850MHz stable. Went ahead for the fun
of it and set fsb to 112MHz to get the CPU to 950MHz and it does work ok but
it's unstable on hot days (works great at night though). Fired up the
arsenal of sims (GPL, N3, GP3, NHeat, Falcon4, Counterstrike) and all ran
noticeably faster than the 700e. So the bottomline for me was that for half
the money I got a faster CPU. Back went the 700e to attacom and back went
the celery to fry's and picked up another celery at attacom for $104. BTW
at 850MHz I set voltage to 1.7 and 950MHz I pump it up to 1.75. Tried up to
1.85 at 950MHz but the heatsink was getting really hot and it didnt seem to
improve stability. Also be sure to get thermal grease between cpu and
heatsink.
YMMV
