I asked Paul Tracy what he thinks of GPL, and he
replied that it's "cool as hell".

I was in a colleague's office on Friday and noticed his July issue of
"Communcations of the ACM". The Association for Computing Machinery is
an international organization for the advancement of computer science.
Each month they put out a magazine based on a particular topic. July's
topic was "Physically Based Computer Animation." In living color on the
cover is a great screen shot of GPL! The shot is of a Ferrari, airborne
at the Pflugplatz heading right at the "camera". In the background you
can see four other cars crossing the bridge right behind, as well as the
countryside of the Nurburgring. Really nicely composed.
Inside is an article called "Physics in Computer Games" by Chris
Hecker. Hecker is technical and art director of Definition Six and
editor-at-large of "Game Developer Magazine". The article is very
general, pointing out some of the issues - the importance of a
consistent experience, the complexity of thorough modeling, hardware
limitations, etc. No game is specifically mentioned by name. However,
the article begins with this:
"I don't know about you, but when I catch air in my Ferrari 312 racing
down the straightaway at Monaco, I look forward to the gyroscopic
effects of the wheels and engine rotating the car in mid-flight.
I especially enjoy it when I crash into a wall or another car, flip
over, and the wreckage - not to mention my standing in the 1967 Grand
Prix circuit - careens down the track, tumbling and bouncing as it
goes."
As I said, he never mentions any games by name, but the credits to the
cover shot state "Cover: Screenshot from Papyrus Group's 'Grand Prix
Legends'". Oddly, there is also a full page picture of a Papyrus NASCAR
car about to roll over (on two wheels) and the photo credit mistakenly
says that it is also from GPL. Throughout the article, they use a small
cutout of a screenshot of a Ferrari 312 airborne (different than the
cover) as a graphic.

Interesting. In fact, a few months ago, I saw GPL shown in a (somewhat)
mainstream magazine, too - the recent Jaguar Racing. There was a big photo
of Johnny Herbert and Eddie Irvine strapped into F1-like cockpits, and
racing GPL cars side-by-side at what looked to be Monza. I think it was shot
at the Melbourne GP. There was some mention of Johnny's interest in
computers in the article. I don't think there was any specific description
of GPL, though. Sorry for the sketchy details, but I only had time to
briefly flip through it when I stopped by a newsstand. At least it's proof
that real F1 drivers have raced the sim. I wonder what they'd say about it.

Too bad Geoff Crammond didn't read them ...
SCNR :-)
Strange coincidence, but i've got a series of articles by Chris Hecker on
the subject of how to write a perspective-correct texture-mapper. Very nice
too.

Ask any of the Players CART drivers and they'll say it's incredible and very
realistic. Ask Montoya, Franchitti, and many other real-life driver also
and they all rave about GPL.
