IF you're having problems, try these things in this order:
Set resolution to 1024x768
Turn OFF pitlane objects
Turn OFF most objects in mirrors (or turn off mirrors entirely)
Turn OFF smoke, particles, and skid marks
These things should get you a decent frame rate on your system. I
had to do a few other things on my system, but with a K6-2 400 and 64 MB
of RAM and a Voodoo Banshee card, I'm running at 1024x768 with similar
settings (I have some other things turned down, too) and I'm getting
between 18 - 27 fps, which works out to be very playable (it only dips
below 20 with other cars on the track, but even then it's still mainly
in the low 20s).
Just about anybody should be able to get decent graphics resolution and
acceptable frame rates in this game if I can with my system.
Hope this helps.

Before you buy.
We BOTH forgot to mention that you MUST enable the option to run the
formation/parade lap before each race -- the game uses this lap to load
in all the game and track textures, and then when the race actually
begins, you get a MUCH more acceptable frame rate going into Turn 1.

All the graphics options
are neatly explained in the manual, but my guess is you can just turn
everything on (if the automatic setup thingy doesn't do so already).

The biggest frame rate hog is the mirrors. Turn those off if you can
live without them and map the rear view look to a wheel button. Race
with only 12 cars instead of 22 makes a big dif too, but you may not
consider that an option. Turn off pit lane objects, miscellaneous

you are happy with the frame rate at the beginning of the race.

This is true, but not possible for everybody. But yep, the advices from EA
are:
1. no mirrors (but i dont wanna race without them, so put off some details
first)
2. no pitlane objects (you wont miss them..)
3. change config.ini to run in windowsmode
Thats all folks

I saw that too, what does this added command actually do?
Thx, matt
Thanks for the advice guys! BTW, how do I change this config.ini to run in
windowsmode? Please explain where this is and exactly what it is that I do
being that I am somewhat computor illiterate!

Config.ini is a file in the main directory F1 2000. Open the file with
notepad. Change 'windowed mode'. That means...make it a '1' instead of a
'0'.
