Correct. I happened to be in the pits with the trackmap on (GP2Lap) and GP2
went vroom vroom and no cars appeared on the map... Ok, I know this is for
GP2 but it doesn't seem as if the sound-engine is that much different...

I noticed that when you're sitting in the pits (and maybe driving in the
pits, I don't recall), then sometimes you hear a "veeeeeeeerooooooooooom" of
another car passing by on the track (ie. outside the pitlane). If you can
hear it sitting in your car in the pitlane, surely you could hear it out on
the race track too?
I suspect somebody either forgot to include it as an option, or they decided
that having to generate the engine note of 22 different cars at once would
throttle the processor.
As with all Geoff Crammond's games, GP3 is not 100% perfect. But for me, it
does almost everything I was expecting/hoping for. I'm pleased that the
menu layout and so on remain very similar, and that you can still get the 20
second replay just by pressing pause. And unlike GP2, it runs fine
providing you have a fairly quick processor (Celeron 500?) and a decent
graphics card. I remember that when GP2 appeared, it was virtually
impossible to run it in SVGA mode using the hardware that was around at the
time!

The cars aren't really going by. Heh.

Send email to [email hidden] and ask. If they
get allot of requests for this, there is a very good chance
they will tell us what the drivers say during the next race.

They sure can. have you ever heard an F1 engine ,they are loud to say the
least. Schumacher even said last week that he can hear the crowd in the
stadium section at Hockenheim. How they can leave the sound out of GP3 is
jsut appailing, evey other racing I've played game has them even pole
postion!

FWIW, when Damon Hill won the F1 WC at Suzuka in '96, there was nearly a
collision between him and Gerhard Berger at the chicane (Berger went off
the track to avoid hitting Hill, damaging his front wing IIRC). Hill
said afterwards that that was the first time in his F1 career that he
had heard the engine of another car (although I presume this doesn't
include starts??).

I think that drivers can't hear other engines even though it makes for a
better game/sim if you do. Watch any of the in-car shots during a GP and
you cannot hear anything apart from the engine of the car you're on, so
imagine what it's like as the driver with earplugs, fireproofs and helmet
on!

I would like to thank everyone that sent email to [email hidden]
and asked about this issue. They said on the telecast today that they
received and extra ordinary amount of email from online PC racing
enthusiasts asking about this :-)
In short I think the answer is definitely *YES* the drivers can
hear the other cars. While Derek Bell said he was not 100%
sure about the modern F1 cars, you certainly could hear the
other cars in the past, and indeed in all other forms of racing.
He also mentioned that even if you could not hear the other
cars, you felt a vibrating/resonance and definitely knew the
other cars were there.
As such, I think it is safe to say this issue can be put to bed.
Also, I am not even going to start slamming sims, because I
think everyone know what this means :-0
Again, thanks to everyone that participated!
