Why GPL fans judge other sims so harshly
After a poster mocked GPL fans for their devotion, don hodgdon posted the joking 'GPL Ten Commandments'. Peter Ives explained that GPL's depth makes other sims feel shallow, a post Andre Warringa said should be in the GPL FAQ. Others said they would welcome a better sim and debated whether everyone would have time for several sims of GPL quality.

If you look at GPLRank, you'll see that a lot of people's fastest
laps are set during races. Not surprising, because of: 1)
slipstreaming, especially at Monza; and 2) the extra pressure, which
can help you round faster (or into a hedge, of course).

Yep. IF a game comes along that I enjoy more, I'll play it more. But
GP3's hopes of being that game seem to be receding rapidly (I'll
still buy it, though - but from EB!). Looks like WSC is about to be
installed as the next "young pretender" to GPL's throne...

Well, it does take a lot of effort to reach these barriers, especially if
GPL is your first sim. Some numbers are even for ever out of reach for some
people. Don't see myself doing a 1m27s at Monza, for example.

We race all the time, sometimes the AI, but mostly eachother. Trouble is,
with the game being out so long, it takes a lot of practise to be
competitive online. Things like GPLRank lift the tedium of practising for
the online events.

We don't, it just seems that way. When you're passionate about a certain
subject you tend to sound more harsh and blinkered than you really are. I
think that's a good thing (sometimes I even go over the top on purpose to
provoke the other poster) as it drives home the point you're trying to make.

That last one is debatable, depending on what definition of "god" you happen

Hmmm... in a sense I am happy my suspicions were confirmed and this
vindicates some of the flack I took for my opinions before we had any code
to go on, in another I would have been even more happy if I'd been totally
wrong so I would have a ground braking sim to buy and play on Friday.
Overall I'm sad as I feel a legend like Crammond owed it to himself to
produce a better game. I'm very disappointed he didn't.

Believe me, myself and all other GPL fans on RAS would like nothing better
than having another game of GPL quality or better. Not in the least because
I think it would spur Dave Keammer into making an even better one (if both
of my heroes fail me with future releases, I'll seriously consider hanging
up my helmet). Besides I think GPL does a good job of defending itself, it's
still around after nearly two years and tales like Bendito's first
experiences with the game lift my spirits.

Ah, the common mistake of associating the liking of a particular game with
it's subjectmatter. This may be the case for the casual racers (I have heard
people spurn NFS:PU because they don't like Porsches), but racing simulation
fans will drive anything that's properly simulated. It's all the same to us,
whether bikes, '67 GP cars or modern F1. Subjectmatter does not enter the
discussion of a game's merits.

Relax ;)
Don't embarass yourself. GPL just raised the bar and expectations MUCH
higher. I think most people here want something to beat GPL, and when it
doesn't, it disapoints them. Well it usually doesn't disapoint me, the only
games that come close and are going to come close to GPL is Viper Racing,
Nascar Heat, Nascar 4, and probably, WSC will surpass GPL. I think GP3 is
pretty good, like the road feel, but it's defidently no better than an
"average" sim like Dirt Track Racing, RallyMasters, or NFS PU. (I'm talking
physics wise BTW :)) Love the FF and AI though.
Thanks,
Alex

Well, if you've any of my comments on the subject you'll know that I'm no
big fan of SCGT, and never was. It's still on my HD though and the recent
arrival of cars like the 917/K, 512, and mini keep it there.
I spend far more time with ICR2 though, and fire it up a least a couple of
times a week. It's a kick. I want an upgrade. I'd be happy if it were 'only'
a graphics upgrade.
Not for fifty bucks though. About twenty sounds right.

I'm a big fan of GPL and most of what makes GPL tick for me is that it
gives me a real feeling of achievement in many ways. The feeling can
come when I get a certain corner just right or catch a big slide or
better my time at some track.
No other car sim gives me this feeling, but I'm eagerly waiting for
something to come up that does.

carefully, but:
- if they were all GPL-quality it would be easier for the accomplished GPL
driver to adapt to the different formulae, therefore "shortcutting" the
learning curve (except for bikes...).
- variety is the spice of life, so if you got "stuck" in one sim you could
put it aside and have something equally rewarding to drive instead for a
while.
But, you've got a point... what if I rephrased to " ...racing simulation
fans will drive anything that's properly simulated at the moment ('cos we're
desperate!! ;-)).

I think I've heard a saying that goes something like 'It's easier for a
poor person to put up with their situation than it is for a rich person
to live as a poor person.'
In effect, after playing the richness of GPL and then trying another
poorly done sim it often feels very much the same. Those that get
excited about GPL and extoll its virtues have seen what is possible when
it comes to driver feedback and handling and they don't want to return
to the poor imitations that continually turn up claiming to be the new
promised land, only to find that they have been let down once again.
However, not everyone is able to get into GPL or is given the
opportunity to discover its delights. Many will just think it is just
plain too difficult, haven't got the time to get used to it or just
don't even want to bother with it in the first place. I would imagine
that you fall into one of these camps.
But for those who have been able to, once they finally discover what it
has to offer, it is like a breath of fresh air in comparison to
everything that has gone before. To them it is that something new and
wonderful that they have been searching for unknown in simland and as a
result they can become quite excited and enthusiastic about the whole
thing. That is why you still see these posts about someone who has just
improved their laptimes. Because they have been able to sense the
potential that GPL has to offer and there is a real sense of
achievement, that all that hard work and effort is finally paying off.
So I don't begrudge these people their moment. They have probably
worked long and hard to achieve it and, as a result, want to share this
achievement with those that they feel will understand - their peers.
Sure you could say we are just playing a game, but the guys here are not
your common or garden casual driving sim players. They are much more
dedicated to this genre and put much more time into it than most and are
therefore more emotionally involved and serious about the whole scene
than your casual gamer.
So when something new comes out - in this case GP3 - they are going to
want to compare it to what has gone before and are going to be more
outspoken about what they have to say. That's why we come to ras isn't
it?

I can understand the reactions from the none-GPL players:
There you have those crazy GPL fanatics again.. a new perfect sim
comes out, and all they can say is 'It's no GPL'!
But you made perfectly clear how it's like when you truly understand
the beauty of GPL: Everything else just seems like a step backwards.
I have fun with GP3, even with all it's faults and letdowns, and
allthough I still can't get the warez version working with my V2, I
will still buy it Friday. Just like I enjoy and have bought F1WGP,
RC2000 and F1 2000. They are fun games/sims, but simply can't be
compared with GPL.

Hi Eldred
Read between the lines.
The real test of GP3 is if people will be playing it instead of GPL. I
don't know how this will turn out, and I would have thought it's too early
too say.
I eventually took GP2 of my computer and kept GPL. I don't play GPL much
now because I find it too difficult and too frustrating. I also don't
think it is reaIistic in that it's too difficult to stay on the road, but
then let's not reopen that one....
I remember when GPL came out anybody who dared to criticise it was flamed
(mainly by those who are currently enjoying slagging off GP3). I
criticised GPL because it didn't have enough options to make it
accessible. It would have been easy to implement a few of the options
which gave GP2 wide appeal. Whatever the arguments, GP3 will be a massive
commercial success although I concede that GC's reputation has now been
tarnished.

Hmm, why do you want a GPL killer? I just want to have a great sim of
classic F1 and a great sim of modern F1. And it looks very much
like I'll be having both come Friday.

Good heavens above! A sensible point of view on r.a.s - what is the
world coming to? I completely disagree with you on one point - I find
GPL more fun than anything else, arcade or sim, I've played thus far.
But I entirely agree that different people have different preferences.

Stir in a good amount of "Alpha Male" behaviour, whereby the one who shouts
loudest gets the most attention, and you have a perfect recipe for a r.a.s.
"discussion".

You're probably partly right in the fact that people are hesitant to give up
something they had fun with this long and with such devotion but.......you
think it's comparing apples and pears but it's not: Even if you forget the
era both sims (GPL, GP3) are put in there's so much that's missing in the
latter: No internet play, No sound of other cars (if you hear it in real or
not, in a sim you need it and it adds to the atmosphere), that stupid
"constant-fps but variable time" aproach of the gfx engine (which is
probably the reason why GC states that Internet isn't up to online racing,
GPL proves him wrong!!!), floating cars, outdated graphics (really doesn't
look that much better than GP2).
I think GC really started working on GP3 the moment the first screenshots
were released last decemer. Can't imagine it took 4 years to evolve from GP2
to this.
I was really hoping for GPL killer but GP3 sure isn't and that's
disappointing.
