Flame warDebate over downloading pirated GP3 before release

A joking post about finding a warez copy of Grand Prix 3 led to a debate on whether downloading pirated games to try before buying is acceptable. Tim Wheatley angrily objected to warez links being posted in the newsgroup, and an argument followed with Vintook about whether anyone could stop such posts. Side discussions covered retailer return policies and the lack of a GP3 demo.

Whats the secret? I dloaded the beta gpl and bought the game when it came out, explain to me who got hurt in the process. I'll tell you who gets hurt by warez, its the companys that make shitty rts/action games that people download and then delete 5 minutes later saying thank got I didnt buy that crap. If I see gp3 warez I will download it straight away, I already have gp3 on pre-order but no I cannot wait I want it now now now NOW! Yeah, me too. I like seeing all those nice looking computer game boxes on my shelves. Even if I now don't play most of 'em. Come to think of it, nearly all of them. Still, I would rather have them than any warez copies anyday.

Here in the UK, if a product is faulty, you have an absolute "statutory right" to claim a refund, not merely a repair/replacement - signs saying "no refunds" are illegal unless a product is "sold as seen". yes, you're looking at it it seems! This isn't a sim group is it? Every time a top range sim is released it turns into a warez group Skotty, you must see surely? I don't care if people download warez, but they should not publically give urls out on a public newsgroup to influence and provide warez for others..... Not likely to happen in NZ. I've spent considerable time debating the addition of returns policies with several retailers and none will 9despite legislation that says they must!). No Deme leaves the publisher open to ppl seeking other methods of try before you buy. We can debate the topic of Warez forever but the fact remains that it is the only way for ppl like myself to try these games. It's either that or I give them a complete miss. This can also cost the Publisher/Developer money

Rod, I think this will be to your satisfaction then. Suggested gear and the rest of the aids from GP2 are there. I am not heavily into the physics either. But take the corners too fast and you will be doing a 360. As well in the rain the FF gave me the impression that the tires had definetly lost their grip. I like GP3 all in all. But as I said in another post........if you expect too much, or compare it to other sims, it may not stack up to your expectations. Cheers **ElfKing** T'was in a kingdom long ago and far away......

I doubt many stores in NZ would offer a returns policy based on the simple fact that the market is *significantly* smaller than that of the US and UK. Would guess barely 0.1% of the size? Here in Australia, only a few EB's have a return policy, and most of those if the software is either unopened, or proven defective. I'm neither going to advocate or condemn 'warez', because the arguments for and against quickly border on absurdity (advising someone that they should lobby EB to build a store near them when the potential market is miniscule so they can have a returns policy is a bit far fetched - and I doubt it will be completed by this Friday), but not all of us are lucky to have generous software retailers that offer a money back policy, and we have to pay on most occassions, 25% extra compared to the US for the priveledge. Unfortunately, I've got a whole cupboard of software I've used once and was dissapointed in the quality. Now, unless it had glowing reviews from those who I respect or I've played a demo or seen in-game footage that impresses me, I keep my wallet in my pocket. However, if GP3 is GP2 with accelerated graphics then they've got a buyer here. A buyer who is a little dissapointed that it wasn't something more. Cheers, Rod.

Elfking (can I call you that? ;) ), from what I can gather, F1-2000 physics seem to be more convincing (a game which I also own and hold in high-esteem), but I'm not a fan of the AI. I use it to hotlap more than I use it to race. The more I read, the more it appears that in many peoples opinions, it has a very big GP2 feel to it. Again, I am a little dissapointed, but not surprised. But the AI is reported to be excellent. The biggest thing that GP3 will do for me is to be able to learn the tracks successfully and compete in a championship without spending hours on end. GP2 is the last F1 sim I was able to do that in, F1-2000 I just can't get a handle on all the tracks. I can master a few, but I not to the point where I can master them all to compete to my satisfaction, and the biggest thing that helps me do this is 'Suggested Gear'. I'm not a physics junkie, but I do want to feel the car behave in a convincing manner. I'm not an accuracy junkie so that if part of the track is a few feet wider in some sections it doesn't bother me. I'm not an eye-candy junkie (even though I just threw a Geforce 2 in my machine ;) ). I'm not an online junkie (even though I've got cable). I'm an immersion junkie... and I'm confident that GP3 will immerse me just as GP2 did. Cheers, Rod.

That's the release date for those of us in the good ol' USA. That's why I've got my copy ordered straight from the UK!! ----------------------------------------- Dan Belcher Team Racing Unlimited http://simcrash.00game.com

Australian software retailers CLAIM that copyright law prevents them from offering refunds unless the product is faulty and then they can only replace it with another copy of the same title. I don't whether this is true but it is what they claim. Peter Holt

And I'm astonished that it > could be *illegal* to do an EB US/UK-style offer - that's ridiculous > in the extreme. Software being faulty is way too subjective. Just look at the divided feelings about the last few sims that have been released. I don't think you could call GP3 'faulty'. Of course we can return faulty goods. Not catering to your tastes does not constitute faulty, and essentially what you were saying before is that the original downloader of the software should lobby EB to build a software retailer in his immediate area so he can pursue a 'try before you buy' instead of a 'download before you buy' avenue. Cheers, Rod.

Hey maybe they purposely leaked the game to the warez sites to see what the reaction would be. Seems people are unable to understand plain english: I am saying, do not post links to warez in this PUBLIC newsgroup, it is read by the PUBLIC and I, for one, do not want the PUBLIC clicking on warez links to be greeted by a banner advertising Britney Spears blowjobs or Teenage Trannies, come on, grow three braincells, stick them in some fluid until there's enough to think with - then say post your messages, not before! You are so vindictive, I think you fit a serial killer profile or something. The original point you made was not to post warez links here, did you kick them off this newsgroup for that? American retailers CLAIM that health laws prevent them from taking returns on swimsuits and undergarments if the package has been opened. This is FALSE. What is true is that the store cannot RESELL such returned items, and they make up the can't take it back line so as not to get stuck with a loss. This claim goes out the window with software, since shrinkwrap machines are cheap. If Australia follows international convention on this your retailers are lying to you.

Okay okay, perhaps I wrote it a little wrong initially. I meant HE could post LINKS to whatever he wanted in here but would be flamed accordingly. Is there something stopping someone from titling a message about an auto sim and then listing a bunch of links to something completely different(like porn)? If so then I've learned something new since I wouldn't do that and don't feel like starting a war by trying it out for testing purposes. To say that I would do such a thing and then posting my traceroute info is just going too far. By doing all that rrevved is just getting out of hand. Do you think he takes it a little personal by disagreeing with him and posting an opinion or what! Vintook "Kevin Gavitt" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:Ynlf5.16149$[email hidden]...

What do you mean by after the fact? Does that mean someone can post an email full of off topic links and it will be posted and then a moderator will come by later and delete it? If that's the case then my premise is correct. If not then as I said before, I learned something new. You don't seem to have your real email address shown either but you don't see me running a trace route on people who disagree with me. If someone posted a link to a help file then I must not have seen it on my news server since some messages don't get to all news server, mine must not have picked that one up. Talk about thick. Look........ You or someone else ( I forget now) were bitching at someone else for posting a link to warez. I was just making the point that you can't stop someone from posting just like you can't stop someone doing pretty much anything they choose to do. You say you can after the fact. Well there you go! AFTER the person has posted the message you can do something. I never said I (can you see the letter I) would post anything off topic here. You seem to think I will post this stuff when I never said any such thing. My original post wasn't very clear, I'm sorry for that. If I ever decide to reply to a rrevved message I guess I will have to be clearer or else suffer the consequences of having my whole life researched, copied and thrown up here for all to see and threatened for stuff I never said I'd do. You seem to think that a response to one of your posts is a personal attack or something. I may not be versed in all the in's and out's of usenet but to follow your own responses, why didn't you just report the person who posted the link to warez and get his account dropped rather than bitch to him about it. I would think this would be a much better response and would do exactly what you bitched about, get links to warez off this group. Vintook P.S. Thank you for reposting the link to the usenet info, like I said, I didn't see it before and am glad you posted it again. Funny how you neglect to paste the next 2 sentences where I stated just what you're refering to(and in the context that backs up my previous point). Revisionist posting perhaps? I have looked it up, you seem to have a reading impediment or something because you don't read the whole post. There was a lot more to that post than what you just cut and pasted and what you left out, did say what you were saying. Read the post again and then take a reading comprehension course.
