New World Sports Cars screenshots stun readers

New World Sports Cars screenshots on SimHQ amazed posters with their apparent polygon counts and anti-aliasing. Some suspected pre-rendered images, but WSC developer Chris West confirmed they were in-game shots taken on a PII 450 with a Voodoo 5 at 1600x1200 with 4x FSAA, and Kenneth Verburg reported a modest minimum spec. A side spat broke out over Bruce Kennewell correcting others' English.

This game looks to be leaps and bounds beyond anything that's been released to date. If it plays anywhere near as good as it looks, they have a winner. Check out this quote too... Wow...incredible. Superb. Figure I'm going to have to reconsider my next cpu upgrade (again.!!)and double it. Can't think of anything more to say. I wonder if like Nascar 4 it will use Hardware T&L to acheive such high polygon counts? That's the only thing I can think of that'll make a game which looks that good run fast enough.

I think those days are gone now. I would be nice to think some programmers could just write code five times faster than anyone elses, but since they are relying on D3D or Glide with a 3D card to draw the triangles, there's not really much that can be done to speed things up in that particular area. Actually, I know they are using Glide (along with D3D of course), and glide doesn't support hardware T&L at all. Maybe the whole game has just got tons of graphical options, so when it looks like it does in those screenshots, it runs at 5 fps. Turn off all the detail and it runs at 30-40fps. Sort of aimed at PC's eighteen months down the line.

They sure do! Absolutely amazing. BUT, what hardware is those guys running? If you look closely those 1600x1200 shots is anti-aliased! And it's no cheap antialiasing either, at least 3x3... Still, FSAA'd 1600x1200... What hardware short of a very powerful SGI can do that _at all_? I don't mean at low framerates, I mean literally at all. 4 sample FSAA, although I'm fairly certain it's much more than that, at 1600x1200x32(I didn't see any 16-bit dither patterns either) would chew up as much as 87M of graphics memory or more. The only PC-hardware I can think of that could actually do this is a V5-6000, with it's 128M of memory. I meant by pre-rendered that the models, settings and textures and all that probably are from the game, but the images isn't rendered real-time on hardware. That's what I'm assuming is done until someone says otherwise anyway... Maybe someone can shoot off a question to those West Racing guys? /Magnus
Simon Brown 09 Jul 2000 00:14 UTC#256990
I would have suggested a V5, since they were definitely showing WSC at E3 on v5's, but then again, can the V5 even do FSAA at that res? Maybe some V5 owners will know...
Simon Brown 09 Jul 2000 01:35 UTC#256946
Well, any feature a 3D card can do, a good 3d programmer can replicate in software with the CPU, and you can make it look exactly the same, including FSAA, but you would be measuring the framerate in frames per day!

Yup. But as it turns out that wasn't so. I got an email from Chris West, one of the developers, and he said that they were taken on a PII450 with a V5-5500 at 16-bit 4XFSAA. That's very, very, impressive, IMHO. I couldn't see any dithering or banding, but then again the .jpg:s were pretty highly compressed... Now we just need an NV20 or Rampage or something... :) /Magnus

Hi Chris, the game looks great so far. So what sort of frame rates would you get in 1024*768 with no FSAA at all, on say a P3-800 with V5/GeForce 2 GTS? Would I be right in thinking this sort of machine will be adequate for playable frame-rates (ie >30fps)? Thanks.
