F1 2000 and GPL frame rates on fast PCs
A poster asked whether any hardware could run F1 2000 smoothly at full detail. Owners of 800 MHz to 1 GHz machines with GeForce2 cards still reported slowdowns at race starts unless other-car detail was reduced. Much of the thread was about getting GPL to a steady 36 fps on TNT2 cards, where one user found his Gateway-branded card was the bottleneck.
Automated summary.
I run 1024x768 mirrors on all set to max etc.

My brother recently bought a PIII 677, tnt2 card, and f1 2000 still doesnt
run flued with all
graphics and all cars.
Does anyone have experience with a faster processor ?
Is there any processor or 3d card out there that can handle the game with
constant high framerates ?
please reply by email
Thanx and kind regards

I run it on my Athlon-800 with a GeForce-2 and it still chokes! Very slow at
the start of the race.

Did you turn "other" cars to low detail? I have a P3 800@900mhz with a
Geforce2. I'm running at 1024x768, with low detail "other cars",
mirrors on just showing cars and track, no pit objects, no extraneous
objects, view distance 125% etc. and it is quite smooth for me. There
is a very slight drop in frame rate at the start of a race, but
otherwise I've got F1 2000 running very nicely and looking good.
Turning off smoke, particles and other cars to low detail makes the
biggest frame rate difference I have found. Just turn down some
options and you should get a good consistent frame rate. If not then I
guess the P3 is the way to go with this game. Full detail settings and
high res are just no possible in this game on todays cpu's. Maybe a
1.5ghz Williamette will do it. :-)

As you would expect, it runs like a banshee. 19 cars at the start of GPL
with all options on, with the in-car view seems to be the only thing that
can drag down frame rates a little(at least until Papy and NVIDIA get all
the openGL driver stuff straightend out). I guess the only problem I'm
having with F1 2000 is I can't really get into it. I want to, but it just
doesn't do anything for me.

Really? I just switched form a Voodoo3 to a Geforce2 and I can assure

I've put the nvopengl.dll 3.68 in the GPL directory, used enditall to end
all processes, set the buffer flipping mode to block transfer (for the
flickering mirrors). Anything I'm missing, Nos? It's killing me trying to
figure out what is keeping the FR down. Every other game screams (I've got
Q3 up in the 80-90 fps), so I am sure it is a setting I am missing with GPL
which will dip to about 30fps at the start of a race. Is there a tweak I've
overlooked?
Thanks,
Dave

I have a Gateway machine, and I'm starting to question the TNT2 in it. Did
GW give me a TNT2 Lite? nVidia's drivers won't load, and the web page says
its a Creative Labs, but their drivers don't load either. Anyone know if
they put in some proprietary stuff on a TNT2? Even their drivers are
labeled as "Gateway - English". Hmmm. No matter, I changed the EIDE drives
to SCSI and will be changing the video card to the Voodoo 5 6k when it comes
out.
Now if we could just get the Act Labs shifter support in GPL, I may never
leave the house again...
Thanks again,
Dave

I wouldn't complain about those numbers, it's good enough considering
the max is 36. I tried FSAA and it was too slow for me (25 or so).
Looks like the Gateway TNT2 card may be proprietary in some way.
Nvidia's reference drivers should work on any Nvidia chipset card.
I expect Gateway is not too prompt about driver updates either so I
would demand that they exchange the card for one that is not
proprietary so that you can get proper driver updates.

I borrowed a Creative Labs TNT2 card from a buddy of mine, and we put in in
with NVidia's reference drivers, and 3.68 in the gpl directory. Guess what?
Frame rate doesn't drop below 36. The Gateway site has drivers, but (as you
said) they are a little behind. All of their drivers load fine, (I tried 3
of them). I tried several nVidia's reference drivers, and none of them
work. I REALLY question the Gateway card now.

Probably tell you tough luck, but they may do an exchange. Worth a

Traded a guy at work even for a Voodoo 5 5500. I almost feel guilty--ok,

In all fairness, he is doing some development work with openGL. So in the

He's one of those that are really, really bright--just no common sense. I
think we all know somebody like that..
Anyway, the TNT2 is probably a better platform for OpenGL development. He
comes out ahead on what he wants to do, and I get GPL in 1024x768 with the
detail all the way to the right at 36fps. We both win!
