First of all, I'd like to congratulate everyone involved with GPLRank for
producing a terrific site.
I've got one suggestion for something I'd like to see, however:
Since the theme of the site is comparing driver performance against a
benchmark, I think that wherever individual lap times are displayed, there
should have a "+/- benchmark" column, so it's easy to see how that
particular lap stacks up against the benchmark for that track.
Just food for thought.
Keep up the good work!

where can I find this crazy "gplrank" thing?
thanks

That's definitely the correct link, though.

Since it is down how about filling us in on just what it is? So far I
get the impression it ranks you by your lap times. the faster the lap time
the higher your rank. Is there anything more to it?

Well, I don't have any affiliation with the site, I'm just a wellwisher, so
I won't give you the full pitch, but the basic idea is that a basline time
is established by aggregating the lap times of the replays which shipped
with GPL. Drivers can upload their player.ini file, which is used to perform
a similar calculation, based on their fastest laps at each of the original
GPL tracks. This provides a 'handicap' number for each driver, expressing
their aggregate lap time relative to the baseline (ie a handicap of +5.78
means you're 5.78 seconds slower than the baseline, and -5.78 means you're
5.78 seconds FASTER than the baseline.) The site then uses these handicap
figures to rank the drivers. When you improve one of your times, upload your
player.ini again, and the numbers will be re-crunched for you.

have a database that I created. It still needs a bit of work so I gave it
to one individuel to finish it. This database could be used for a rankings
system as It'll keep track of a whole lot of info. The only problem is that
it won't keep track of you're race average laps.. (from the replay
analyzer). Speaking of.. I'll have to get ahold of the auther of that
aplication to see if he could impliment this :-)
The GPL Rank feature thingy that you're describing (in my opinion)
should be changed to "GPL hot lap ranking".

Dougs description of the scale GPLRank uses is accurate, but GPLRank is not a
hotlap competition. It's a place where we can all compare ourselves, yes it
sounds the same, but it's not. GPLRank does so much that I'd rather not try to
explain it all here. Bottom line is that it's turning out to be a lot of fun
and a great motivator for people. So please, give the site some time to settle
down and come and check it out, I think you'll like it. Don

That's right! We can use the same benchmark times, just rope off a
separate section for the F2 & F3 drivers.

Hi Ron,
For starters, the GPLRank website has been built completely by one
guy, Uwe Schuerkamp of the Screamers Racing League. There are a few
of us helping out with ideas, suggestions, debugging and such, but
Uwe, who also works a full time job, is doing all the coding.
The feature list of GPLRank is growing like mushrooms on a damp day,
and it's truly impressive to me what Uwe is doing. Needed to say
that.
Although the original included replays, of F1 cars, is what anchors
the scale that GPLRank uses, the scale is open ended, and there is
no reason that the same scale cannot work just as well for F2 or F3
cars, although the Sub Zero concept of the scale isn't going to
work as well.
You can do what your requesting right now, to a degree. Creat a new
account for your F2/F3 driver, different name and password,(maybe add
F2/F3 to the end of your name) and upload the F2/F3 player.ini. Get
your F2/F3 racing mates to do the same. Your rank number is going to
look pretty bad compared to the F1's but ignore it. Use the Buddy
List feature to create a F2/F3 only Buddy List, and there you have
it. A seperate F2/F3 area could be a future feature.

I've had the game since Jan 99!) to get a handicap (Rouen, Silverstone,
Nurburgring, Mexico, Spa) and what a handicap it is...currently ranked #275
with a handicap of 231.90! =)
Just so you know what a spread my times are...at Monza I'm ranked #199, but
at Spa it's like #320-something =) I was amazed; my 10.32 at the Ring was
good for a low-300 ranking there!

Hi,
One thing that this program needs is the ability for all players to be
catalogued, not just the F1 drivers..
There are a lot of guys that run F2 or/and F3 only, so is it possible to
add a section for F3 & F2 drivers as well ??
Most F3 or F2 drivers have seperate player names made up for the F3 or F2
class of racing, so it would be possible to forward these player files in
the same manner as the F1 player files...
Just a thought, wish list.. :)
Cheers,
Ron

Yep, we had some problems this morning network-wise, the
machine itself is still ticking along fine. Sorry for the
inconvinience. I'm in the process of looking for a new home for
GPLRank in the not too distant future.
Cheers,
Uwe
