Re: zeltweg and Suzuka for gpl??

Hints of Zeltweg and Suzuka for GPL

Users found Zeltweg and Suzuka folders listed in Alison Hine's GPL utility, which sparked speculation about new tracks. Alison explained that Zeltweg was Noonan's working name for the Osterreichring and declined to comment on Suzuka. GPLEA's Phil Flack said banked tracks and crossovers were technically possible but he had no desire to build banked Monza.

>Mmmmmmmn Suzuka... drool... > >Here's hoping Ya doesnt that sound great. Maybe GPLEA can help us all with that, Noonan does a good joobn infact grewat but hes tracks have the (invisible fence wall) but hey even he can probably make one. :) lets cross our fingers.

I think i heard that in GPL track can't make an 8 ( one part of the track going under the bridge of the other part of the track ). Suzuka is just like that so i don't think we'll see Suzuka for GPL. Suzuka.... Somehow I doubt it. Tell me if I'm wrong but in GPL you cannot have a crossover because of problems with collision detection. Ain't this why the general concensus is that the Monza banking is a no-no? It's because of copyrights or something like that that we don't have a banked Monza. It would be possible to make it I guess. If that's true Olav, if the only problem with an overlaying track is a crashing AI, then making a banked Monza for online racing shouldn't be that hard? Here we go, time to set a few records straight: * Making a banked track is easy. I've done that. * Making a cross-over should be possible (suzuka and all). * The AI *might* have a problem at the crossover point, but shouldn't * I have no desire to make banked monza. * IIRC, Monza when banked had the track broken into two down the s/f straight, which makes life easier. * The way I make tracks, it will not be possible to have any objects placed around the cross-over (so no bridge as there is now). * Strange stuff might happen if you try and access the opposite part of the track around the cross-over (which might be the case because the 'ceiling' around all tracks is 1000ft). * To make banked monza, you would have to recreate the entire track over, because it would be A Bad Thing to hack the existing monza to add the banked oval. Anyhow, looking at the P-Ring, there might be a problem with banking. At first I thought it was just the two different formats (Nx vs. GPL) but after seeing P-Ring I have my doubts.

The banking at the Pants Ring was designed so you could get the car at 90 degrees. Thus it is made out of 16 invidually angled rings of track. Because of the limits of GPL, these sections are linearly sloped - thus driving with the imposed minimal tyre contact patch is very difficult. Normally banked tracks either have smoothly curved cross-sections, or are simply a piece of track where the outside has been raised - thus one flat piece. And no, the human controlled cars don't seem to exhibit any weird physics, but the AI have big problems! Oh, and just to throw another spanner in, I've discovered that it is possible to slipstream with both cars in mid air ! Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! Phil Dave Henrie wrote:

The banked monza track is available for GP2. Could this be converted for GPL ? I am told that the GP2 format would make a good standard for all third party tracks. How about a GP2 to GPL converter.
I heartily endorse your reasoning, Phil. Now go and make Solitude! :-) -- Regards, Bruce Kennewell, Canberra, Australia. ---------------------------
Trivia:- The two banked turns (Karussell and the mini-Karussell) were never actually designed as "banked" corners. The road surface is actually the flat tarmac; the banking was designed as a gutter to allow rapid run-off of rain water!! It was only after some smart drivers started to use the "banking" and lowered their lap times that it became accepted practise by everyone racing there to follow suit. -- Regards, Bruce Kennewell, Canberra, Australia. --------------------------- > -- > > Didn't we here of problems with GPL cars on tracks with High banking. > >I'm not sure I remember the thread, but wasn't the summary that > >GPL's car physics are limited to a certain # of degrees and some of the > >Nascar tracks exceeded that? It's a little bit disapointing, the banking in GP2 can't have more than a 10 degrees (or so) banking... but fun nevertheless. Andre

Did I read it here or someplace else that the grass and dirt "ditch" at the Karussell was first used by Juan Fangio's mechanic while checking out the car prior to a race. He told Juan, Juan used it in the race and the next year they put the concrete down. I don't know how close this is to the truth but it makes for a good story. The problem is that GP2 and GPL have likely absolutely no similarities in track formats. GP2s is obviously easier to crack - look at the number of tracks and the editor!! The only reason you see converters of any kind (notice how they are ALL from Papy to Papy? N2><ICR2, N3><NL, ICR2>N3>GPL, etc etc) is because all Papy games have similar formats for the tracks. Kinda like comparing DOS 6.22 to Win98SE. Enough differences that it takes work to port something written especially for DOS 6.22 to 98SE, but enough similarites that it is possible. -- Kirk Lane [email hidden] [email hidden] ICQ: 28171652 BRT #187 "Yeah you won't find me I'm going MIA Tonight I'm leaving Going MIA Getting lost in you again Is better than being known" -Foo Fighters, "MIA" Stephen <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > The banked monza track is available for GP2. Back in 94 when I was there last, it was a BMW M5 with a roll cage and a professional driver, think it was Michael Martini at the time, the cost was 75 DM for one lap, but that was divided among the 3 passengers... GP2s is obviously easier to crack - look at the number of >tracks and the editor!! Not necessarilly the right conclusion :-) Paul Hoad started cracking the track format way back when F1GP was released (1992?). Add to this the very "open" attitude of everyone involved and the large userbase. JoH

I believe the layout it still the same, but some of the jumps have been smoothened out a bit I think, although in the Renn Taxi we still got airborne, I've not driven this course enough, neither in GPL nor in real life, to answer that Q properly, but others in here have stated as much, so if you know the layout from GPL, you ought to be able to find your way around it :-) Having said that, nothing, absolutely nothing, can prepare you for the experience of running the Ring in a real car, I just hope that we will see this track in a proper Touring Car sim some day, GPL is all well and good and I love it's physics model, but it's not really my kind of racing, I need doors and a roof...:-) Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy "Team Mirage" http://www.teammirage.com/ "The Pits" http://www.theuspits.com/ * Spam is for losers who can't get business any other way * "Spamkiller" http://www.spamkiller.com

A large part of it still exists, AFAIhave been told. It's all public roads now. It lies outside of the current F1-track. From looking at the map, I'd say this piece of the track is quite alike to the Nordschleife in terms of how the turns are.

Not according to my reference material, Thorsten. They (the sloped sections) were designed as culverts, not as part of the intended road surface. That they were so used was simply due to drivers seeing that some advantage could be obtained in negotiating the curve. -- Regards, Bruce Kennewell, Canberra, Australia. --------------------------- Thorsten Rueter <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:8ea882$2pau$[email hidden]... > No, you're wrong. Sudschleife..is this what some people refer to as The South Circuit? It was a loop that joined the main circuit at the South Curve. I believe you can see where it joins the main "North Circuit" in GPL. The combined North & South Circuits were used several times for Grand prixs during the thirties, obviously because the Germans didn't think 14 miles was long enough for one lap!
