Interesting that you think Voodoo5 will be the answer. I think you

Flame warGreg Cisko's insulting post at F1 2000 warez users
Greg Cisko attacked people playing pirated F1 2000 without buying it. Many took offence at the sweeping insults, and Borut Srebotnik's reply mocking his language was widely praised. Others argued over whether demos are representative and whether warez can stand in for a demo.

I can understand people trying it out too. But this game has been
way over warez'd IMHO. I really don't have an issue with it until I hear
some asshole claim that they won't buy it; but "oh hell yeah" they
will still continue to play their warez version and evaluate it. Screw
those people.

But your response is typical of the rationalizations we read here. *Anyone*
who doesn't buy the game after using the downloaded game has cheated EA.
They had full use of the full product (it doesn't matter if it is 1 minute
or 1 week) without paying anything. Doesn't matter if you liked it or
didn't like it. I merely point this out. I refrain from attaching personal
insults, because I copied games back in the days of C64s. That's a long
while ago, and a lot of intervening years have given me a little more
perspective. Having published some of my work, I can begin to understand
the hardline approach people take to copyright issues.
Considering that EA almost always releases a demo, why the rush?

On to some warez issues. In it's time I downloaded the leaked GPL
pre-production version and still bought the retail GPL. In fact i bought the
second copy of GPL as a backup disk, but that was more of a saying thank you
Papy for the best sim ever! Here in Slovenia you can't buy a game and return
it with full refound just because you didn't liked it. Furthermore, i'm the
type of person that can't wait couple of weeks to read all the reviews on
certain sim and then buy it or not. I must have it first! I bought GP2,
Indycar2, Nascar2, F1 Racing Simulation ( i burned myself on this one ), GPL
the very first moment they were available.
So, now you must think that i have F1 2000. No, i don't! Couldn't find the
link and still it would be too big a download for my analog line. Those are
two main reasons i don't have it and only then there is that moral issue.
I hear so much about the "fact" that if we pirate software the software
companies will have less money to develope good titles and similar nonsense.
Have you ever thought about how much money software companies "stole" from
you? State of the art graphics, ultra realistic, most advanced, blah,
blah... for a sim that you deleted after two weeks.
To make this story even longer, the software market isn't functioning well.
We have bad, good, superb sims going for virtually the same price. How can
one know which sim is good if the price doesn't hold that information in it.
Unless you follow the making of the sim through r.a.s. or some other chanel
of information you have an odd chance of getting what you paid for.
Warez version of F1 2000 is for me a very good demo. It's like EA PR
department can say anything if you want to belive them. Others can try it
out and see it with their own eyes. You can't have a realistic race at Monza
with words EA is feeding us with so i can understand people TRYING out the
warez. If this was the EA Sports game i would buy it for sure as they are
the best out there as for the simulations from EA i hope one day they are
the best too, so Geoff and Papy would work even harder.

Yes, EA will problably release a demo. After running it myself(not the
demo!), I know that running with a full field will be hard on most
systems. Will this problem be there in the demo? Also, there are a lot
of racinggame demos, where some features, like the physics, are dumbed
down. They promise the whole deal in the release version, but when you
buy the release version, it often is dissapointing. RC2000 anyone? The
GPL demo wasn't very honest aswell, the AI is very demanding on the
CPU...
Beside that, since software makers force me to put the CD in the
drive, I can understand warez people a little more. After all, those
warez people even have a better copy then I have! And I paid for it!
I will keep buying the games I play, and I will not download warez,
but if I've the chance to test a warez version, I will....

they have patches for about every game so you do not have to have your CD in
the drive.
I personally hate to have to keep my CDs in the drive, the main reason is
that I always have about 10-15 games install on my machine at one time since
we do alot of lan gaming. I do not like having to find each cd when I want
to play.
These patches are not illegal unlike the warez versions of games (which I do
not believe in at all, but you have probably read my posts on this and
already know that).

Mind who you call an asshole Mr. Cisko. I don't take insults very kindly.
I have never hid the fact I downloaded it, neither have I used any device
other than anti-spam in posting about it to hide my identity. If EA want to
make an issue out of this, they know where to find me.
I did the right thing, however. I presented myself at my local software
store today. They hadn't received a copy of F1 2000 yet, so I had one
reserved for me.
In the mean time both the zips and the expanded version have been securely
(i.e. irrevocably) erased from my system, the registry hack has been removed
as well.
I can not speak for everybody who downloaded the "ripped" version, but I
don't want to be called an asshole on their behalf either.

BRAVO, Borut! You put a big grin on my face this morning!
It seems that those of us who are not native speakers tend to articulate
things in as good a way as possible, while some of those on the 'other
side' tend to forget about such details. The same would probably go for
any other language apart from English. Have you checked any of our
Slovenian message boards? I did, once.
Yours was a well thought out post, but, unfortunately, I have to
disagree with your views. Piracy was something that was half legal in
the eighties in Slovenia and the rest of Yugoslavia, which is something
I am sure you remember well. Perhaps that is why I am more sensitive
about these issues now, especially since in my short life I have already
had a chance to produce something of intellectual value. Fortunately, in
science once you publish it's yours and noone can steal it from you, in
fact, if somene uses your idea and builds further on it it is just
towards your benefit. Unless they claim it was their original idea in
the first place, but this can fortunately be verified.
Back to software, then. The fact that a product is not out in Slovenia
yet is irrelevant. In fact, practically all releases that are out in the
UK are out in Slovenia usually only a week later. Sometimes the whole of
Europe has to wait, though, when it is an American release (the same
goes the other way around, too). But then you always have the option to
order overseas. Expensive shipping costs? Yes, perhaps, but this is more
than compensated by the low price of the products ordered this way. The
last software product I ordered form the States was Jane's F/A-18 which
arrived here about 10 days after the North American release, and was
actually cheaper (including post&packaging) than the one that appeared
on the shelves a few weeks later here. Not to mention that I hear the
European release has a lower quality material manual (i.e. no spiral
binding), but this is a completely different issue.
Trying out the product before you buy it? A point in case, perhaps, but
I can imagine that you may be given to try a partial version (a demo),
but using a full version without paying for it and without the consent
of the publisher is stealing intellectual property in my opinion,
especially at the point you are not testing the features anymore but
getting any benefits out of it (which, in games, is the entertainment
value). A car dealer may give you a test drive, but he will not give you
a car for a couple of weeks to test it and then return it if you are not
pleased with it, at least not the car dealers I know of.
The demo may not be out before release, though, if ever. Still, noone is
forcing you to buy the product the moment it hits the shelves. If you do
so, however, this is the risk you are willing to take, and it is like
that with all new products, not only software. But in my opinion one can
make a valid picture of what to expect from a product from the people
who did do so and report their findings in various forums/NGs or from
the reviewers that he or she trusts, and sometimes just from the
reputation of the developers and the knowledge of the development cycle
(GP3 will be a case like this for me). I have been following this
principle for a couple of years now and have been satisfied with all the
sims I got my hands on in this time, and got much more than I paid for
from all of them, if this can be measured.

I've been on the net too long to really get offended, but suppose the
situation arose where you needed some help (and I'd be able to assist) you
now know where not to come knocking.
BTW: my understading of English is fine... the tone of my message was
deliberate. I think your reply speaks volumes about your personality.

But you will get a test drive in the car you want, not a crippled down
version with only two gears. And you already know what it is supposed
to do. You don't have to worry about if the car runs slower with more
than 30 other cars on the road (or the baggage retrieval system
they've got at Heathrow.) And if you have a lot of problems with the
car, you can go back to the dealer and have him fix it. And of course:
while you try the car, noone else can try it at the same time and the
dealer has money invested in that copy of the car. Neither applies to
software.

An analogy is just that, an analogy, not the exact same thing and should

Although I appreciate your post, I think many people view it that they are tired
of getting screwed by flawed software and most places will not refund their
money. Thus, they use warez to test it out. (Don't get me wrong... many don't
buy the software even if they love it!)
Also, many times the demo is poor (take Mobil 1 Rally for example) yet the final
release is pretty solid. Im not advocating warez, its against the law.. plain
and simple. At the same time, I understand the reasoning behind it. After
testing it on a friends PC, I can honestly say I would be one P@SSED off
individual If I had paid for it and couldn't get my money back. Such as NASCAR
Revolting, NASCAR Road Racing, NASCAR Revolting SE, and NASCAR 2000 (Still
Revolting).
I also understand the hardship of software companies and retail houses offering
money back guarantees without a real solid way of preventing copying and then
returning. The whole situation is kind of a catch 22.
Just my opinion.

I thought the Toca demo showed potential...didn't like the driving model
but quite liked the feeling of racing in a pack. I bought the full thing,
played it for 2 days and sold it to a friend. The demo was, IMO, very
representative of the full release.
The bottom line is *why* would a developer agree to put out a demo which
didn't accurately reflect the full product? Tweaks etc will occur but it's
got to be fairly close to finished.

The differences I was referring to had to deal with adjusting the controls. In
the demo, I simply could NOT control the car. Once I turned the wheel beyond a
certain point, the car would go into a spin. There wasn't any adjust in the
demo for control sensitivity, and it affected my opinion of the driving.
Because of that MAIN issue, I didn't want to buy the game. I was told by
someone here that there WAS an adjustment in the full game, and it was actually
worth buying. I got the game for about $15, and it's an ok game. I still need
to tweak the controller sensitivity a bit, but it's MUCH different from the
demo. My long-winded point<g> was that based soley on the demo, I simply would
not have bought the game. So, how many other people got the same original
impression of the game from the demo, and didn't have the benefit of r.a.s. for
advice?
