Andretti Racing wheel and finishing full-length GPL races
A Dutch user asked about the MadCatz Andretti Racing wheel with digital steering, and owners praised its precision and described pedal modifications, though it did not work with N3 over USB. The thread drifted to the concentration needed to complete full-distance GPL races and leagues that run GP-length races online.
Automated summary.
You can't dig with it!

I'm not in
Holland, but the wheel should be the same. It's an excellent wheel. Probably
the best non FF wheel. My lap times actually dropped a couple days after I
started using it. The wheel itself is not well padded like a CH EXL500, Act
Labs or Logitech non FF, and has a little smaller grip than I'd like. The
pedal unit is heavy and well made, but over engineered. The pots are gear
driven by the pedal levers which is nice. It doesn't support split axis as
far as I can tell, if that really matters. The pedal travel is too much with
the last 1/4 of travel dead space. The pedal pads are hinged and sprung on
the pedal levers (supposed to be more comfortable) and gave a false sense of
where the pedal lever actually was. But, its easy to block the end of the
pedal travel with rubbers erasers stuck behind the levers (they'll fit) or
go inside the pedal base and put stoppers there. And I removed the pedal
pads from the levers, disconnected one side of the pad spring, and tightened
it down so the pads don't swivel on the levers. All this took about 1/2
hour. Now they are the best pedal unit I've ever used. And they look great
too :) The steering tension is not heavy, I'd say medium to light, and the
steering is very accurate. The stick shifter has great feel and a nice
knob. It also has paddle shifters that use the same buttons as the stick
shifter. Except for the pedals, its not the best looking wheel I've had or
seen, but I like it because of what it does (accuracy) , and it is well
made. Two things to note. The pedal pads are a smooth, non-slip surface
that unfortunately works very well. You can't wear rubber soled shoes with
them. Also, this wheel and the MS non FF USB wheel do not work in UBS mode
with Nascar 3. Papy says its the MadCatz drivers, but they work in all other
games just fine. So in Nascar 3, you'll have to use the game port.

Just want to add a few things. I ended
up removing the pedal pads and installed my old T1 roller pedals (personal
preference). I also went down to my local hdw store and bought a couple of
flat metal plates about 1/2X2 and screwed them into the top of the pedal
travel slots to reduce the pedal travel and thus remove the dead spot in the
upper limit of pedal travel. I run N3/NL/GPL fine in USB mode. It's a
DX7.0 issue. Madcatz says 6 months or more for a new driver. I haven't
tried DX7.0a yet, waiting till just before I need to re-install W98 next
week before I try. The DXuninstaller utility failed miserably for me after
my initial install of DX7.0 so be wary. I currently use DX6.1.
Cant really go wrong for $70.

things "better". Also nice to see someone else pay attention to the dead
travel space in pedals. Lots of guys on here have complained about not
enough pedal travel on some units, but don't realize that most of the time
this extra travel is just dead space.
I thought of the metal strips to cover the end of the pedal slots, then
wondered if the plastic cover would crack around the***holes from the
beating it would take. Then I though, use one piece of metal long enough to
cover both slots and secure it with several screws to even out the pressure
when the pedals bang into it. I actually used the erasers for only a short
time to test out the pedal function with reduced travel. Plus its easy and
anyone can do it. Glueing flat nylon plastic on the bottom inside base under
the levers also worked good and was easy. For my permant fix I ended up
tapping a couple***holes in the base under the pedals levers. Short
screws (ah, the power of a Dremell Tool) are screwed in and adjusted and
then Loc-Tited to hold the adjustment. A bit overboard??

games, every single one. It just doen't work with Nascar3. Also, I've talked
to people using the combo with DX6.1 and their's don't work either, so I
don't think its got anything to do with DX7. Papy did say its the MadCatz
drivers but I doubted this since the drivers work in all the other games and
since the MS USB wheel also has problems with N3. But, since your's works,
maybe there's another factor involved, like video card drivers, network
cards, motherboards, or something else thrown into the equation. Or it may
in fact be that the MadCatz and MS drivers have some little quirk that N3
doens't like. Hmmm, but then, why does your's work with DX6.1 and others'
don't?
Got me puzzled.

>Damn. It's hard to keep the concentration up for two hours.
It's VERY hard. I've never finished one. I have tried several times but
after 60-80 percent of the race I start to loose concentration and I go
off and get a bent suspension or other stuff. And it's no fun driving a
car like that for the reminder of the race. Especially not if you have
FF and have to hold on to the wheel like crazy.
Record is 101 laps at the Glen out of 108... :(

Before you buy.
Yesterday I completed a 68 lap GP race at Monza for the first time.
Before, my engine would allways blow up after a lap or 30. I adjusted
my driving style, which costed my tenths of seconds every lap, but at
least I could finish the race.
On lap 68 I was in third position, Clark being first, 30 seconds
ahead, and Gurney second, 12 seconds ahead of me.
At least my name would be mentioned in the newspaper. And given that I
spinned 4 times during the race, without damage, I was very pleased
with this result.
Ok, last lap: Exiting 2nd lesmo, I suddenly saw a white flag. Before I
knew it, I rammed a Ferrari who was driving very slowly just after the
bridge. I got heavy car damage, my steering went wild, and a wheel
broke off. I got back on the track and made it to the finish, but I
had dropped to the 8th position....
Damn. It's hard to keep the concentration up for two hours.
Going to try again tonight :)
Andre
Just interested, are you running with the AI tweaked or "hyped"?
James Larson
Omaha, Nebraska, USA
I didn't touch the AI, so it's hyped. That's why Clark and Gurney keep
dirving better than me, as soon as I improve, they improve too. Hill
would have been faster than me too, but he got engine problems after a
couple of laps.
I think it's competely fair to turn the hype off, but I like the hype,
I like it when Clark keeps beating me, it makes me push my car to the
limits more and more.
The only problem I have with the AI is that they can race far too fast
with cold tires and a full fuel tank, my tactic is to start first and
block them in every way I can. After a lap or 3 my tires are warm
enough to match their laptimes. Often I let Hill and Clark pass, when
they are too close to me. After a lap or 40, my laptimes are about
half a second faster than theirs, and I can catch up on them quite
easily.
The biggest problem of the AI is the problem they have with overtaking
other cars. On Monaco this is a real disaster, you can win there with
your eyes closed, since all the fast guys are being old up by the
slower cars. That's why I love racing on Monza, the AI doesn't have
the overtaking problem there so much.
Another problem with the AI is a bug imho. Sometimes an AI car has
engine problems, but he doesn't enter the pits, he just keeps on
driving. This caused my crash yesterday on the 68th lap, the ferrari I
crashed with was allready 20 laps behind!
In the next patch (?) the AI should be taken of the track if their
laptimes are way below normal lap times, or if they are more than 4
laps behind.

That's why you hit the 'pause' key every so often. We have a luxury that real
drivers don't have. We can get up and stretch our legs...<g>

No pause key, that option is the only option that Papy should have
left out! :)
Ok, it can be quite handy sometimes when the phone rings or your
hamster is on fire, but when I drive a full race, I take the hook of
the phone and close all curtains. The biggest challenge of a full GP
is to keep the concentration up for 2 hours.
I think it's amazing that real f1 drivers can concentrate so long.
After a lap or 30, my mind starts to wander, my lap times drop, and I
really have to concentrate myself very hard to keep up.
All part of the game.
All part of the sim I mean :)
Andre
Well done, I've been running some full length races in NL over Christmas,
and I can appreciate the effort you have put in. It does seem a bit
***ive though, don' t you think? Some how the bleary eye, dead beat,
endurance aspect adds a whole lot of adrenalin, once its all over! I bet A J
Foyt (or Jim Clark) couldn't sip a Coke though, or am I cheating?
Steve :-)

Anyone else have the same driver, be it Guerney or Bandini or any other AI
driver be the first to become a casualty in medium to GP races??

No, the AI casualties seem completely random to me. Afaik you can
tweak the ai damage chances per driver with AItweak, perhaps you have
used that?
