Flame warPentium III owner hits back at critics
Morris Jones objected to the rude replies to his new-PC post, which drew further mockery and a sharp, profane exchange led by Antti Markus Peteri. Other posters discussed Athlon versus Pentium III performance in GPL and the lack of Athlon motherboards from ASUS.

Why didn't you ask us which puter to buy before you went away and bought the
overprized P3? I think a post about what puter to buy to run auto simulators
best is much better than a post about what puter already bought, unless you
have questions about the new puter. For example if you had asked if your new
P3 600 will run GPL and N3 faster than the cheaper Athlon 600, then we could
have answered - No, the Athlon 600 is probably faster...
Ask here first, then buy, not the other way around. Your current strategy is
probably one of the reasons why you had a P2 400 before instead of an
overclocked Celeron 300A.
If you want to tell someone you bought a new puter, tell your friends, not
this NG... unless you have a question about it :o). If you post it here we
might think you have no friends, which is okay of course, but if you have
needs like having to tell someone you bought a new puter, then you should
get some friends.

Don't be upset, I kinda thought "only 600". With the Athlon 700 out, I
thought I'd see one of those "I can't wait for my 700 to get here" post.
I had a PIII 450, and it was not the greatest chip for GPL (at the start of
a full race it was slow), and my old PIII was faster than your 400, so, you
will see a difference at the start of races.
Oh and by the way, who cares what your going to do with the old computer,
out with the old, in with the new.
A little thin -skinned aren't we? Lighten up, this is just a news group.

Well, aren't you the brilliant one...
So that next time he'll know better, and instead of Usenet hellholes
he'll direct the news to his friends and closest ones who genuinely do
care, and get the response he could welcome, rather than the less
understanding concerto which only seemed to disappoint him. Of course,
anyone can post just about anything they wish to this ng - as you can see
- but the point was that since Morris was a bit upset about the reception
of his undeniably quite innocent & enthusiastic message, he would be well
adviced to keep those kind of news to himself and his friends. And those
with a thicker skin... just keep posting whatever you want, makes very
little difference to either party. What I did was point out what I
perceived to be the simple, albeit harsh reasons for the group's
reactions.

Good for you. Neither do I. On average I post one message to each 600-800
messages I've read. Consider yourself exceptionally unlucky. OTOH, luck
has nothing to do with it, almost everyone pays most attention to
messages in which their own words are questioned. I'm not an exception,
even if the actual subject has become most insignificant.

Christer,
Why in the world would someone ask you for an opinion only to hear as a
response "Probably"? The AMD part may be faster on some of the "fixed"
benchmarks, but we'll see how it fares upon widespread adoption. It really
makes no difference whatsoever if a CPU is faster if it miserably fails
software/hardware compatablility. We know the P3's are fully compatable
now, not the "what if" of the Athlon.
Morris,
Pay no mind to some of the responses you recieved. Annononymity equals
bravery in an online forum. Take many of the same "flamers" in a one to one
confrontation and they will cower behind mommies shirt tail :-)

I've got an Athlon, (550), It is very fast, and not just at benchmarks,
every game I have thrown at it I can run all settings max, and still get a
good frame rate (I had a PIII 450, and I can not say the same about it).
As far as hardware/software compatablility, it works with all the hardware I
had with the PIII, and all my games. I have not heard of any compatablilty
issues with the Athlon.

It never drops below 19 frames, even at the very start of a race with full
grid, max detail, and res set to 1280x1024 (at least at Monza, have not
tried other tracks yet).

I think ASUS do have a mainboard available. One company (in the UK at
least) I know of is doing Athlon/mobo combo's for :
500Mhz - 269ukp
550 - 335
600 - 444
650 - 539
includes coolermaster fan thingy.
Still too pricey for me but certainly seems the way to go rather than
PIII.

This is how I feel too, I've used many different boards in my PC's over
the years, but somehow I always come back to ASUS, too bad Intel
(probably) scared them off the Athlon, but then again, the famous Tom
has praised AMD's products before....

Well coz none of the AMD processors could match Intel in performance and
compatibility so far... Dunno about the future and the Athlon but that's how
it was so far...
Just check how many guys here have problems and have the K6! Maybe the DX7
does wonder for AMD but I doubt it. Than again the AMD is much better than
the crapy Cyrix.
To avoid some crossfire here I"m not saying that the AMD products suck big
time it's just that I know Mark and what he needs from his rig...
