Need for Speed is Awful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Flame warNeed for Speed criticism turns into a flame war

A poster called The Need for Speed awful, citing low-resolution graphics and no serial support, and recommended Hi-Octane instead. Others replied that the game had SVGA and modem play and suggested he read the manual, while some contrasted it as an arcade game with NASCAR Racing as a sim. The thread degenerated into a long personal exchange between Bill Gill and Chuck Lamphear about free speech and spelling.

That's odd, the copy I bought has SVGA (640x480x256) that looks just fine.. wish my system (486DX2/66) was fast enough to run it in that mode. As it is, I run in plain-jane 320x200x256, which, though a bit blocky on my 20" monitor, looks pretty good and runs smooth as glass. It also has multiplayer support via modem (which we finally got working, I'll follow up to my previous post with the answer), though it tends to do some odd things to the steering when you have a second player plus a whole slew of other cars on the track. Running head to head on a closed circuit against another player is very cool, though. The Need for Speed is, IMHO, a fantastic arcade-style driving game. It is NOT a simulator in the same sense as NASCAR or F1GP, but it's FUN, and that's what I look for. YMMV. -LjM -- James | Social Engineer | 93 Kaw ZX-6E | means never having | E O E Mackey | BitterCynicalSOB | DoD #587 | to say "Thank you, | E U A v1.0 | Beer Snob | "Pinky" | drive through." | D R D

Too bad you don't know how to read manuals/navigate a programs interface. If you did, you could have figured out the graphics. Perhaps you should stick with a first generation NES. It might be over your head, but in a couple years you will be up to speed.
I like NFS...But it is strictly an arcade game. To compare it with a sim with the undeniable quality of NASCAR RACING is unfair. Personally I don't think there is a comparison !! But that is only my opinion.
Jeff Tindl 01 Oct 1995#305969
I don't like the game because I play it on 3DO and that version is MUCH better!!! And by the way, I ran the game atthe highest graphice res. on my P133 with 32mb ram, dual 1.6 drives and a Matrox card w/ 4 mb WRAM!! Just try the 3DO version for yourself!!

Hm. The significance of this sentence will become apparent as we continue with the exercise. You're right, he is. You're right, he didn't. But then, he didn't insult YOU, either, so aren't you just as guilty as what you're accusing Bill of? He also spread disinformation about the game. This has been addressed by other articles, including one of my own. As I see it, Bill never told Jeff to shut up, he merely disagreed with him. Granted, he did so in a rather abrasive and inflammatory manner, but he never tried to tell him that he had no right to say what he did. Yaknow, Chuck, the only person I see here trying to squelch anyone's "freedom of speech" is you. You're the one telling someone to shut up and that they're wrong for saying something. Hm. Is the communist accusation severe enough to be an example of Godwin's Law? Shame it had to come so soon... And remember, Chuck, "I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it". Have a swell day. -LjM Ohyeah, and my apologies for a flame on RAS... lemme see if I can come up with an ObAutoSim... uh... what kinda times are people getting on the various roads/tracks? Chuck- Shut up. You're insulting me. I didn't insult you. I expressed my feelings about Jeff Tindle's POST. I OH NO !!! This is turning into constitutional emergency!! And you my friend have violated his 12th amendment rights and my 15th amendment (Sec.b para. 2) rights. Not to mention the 5th poster back, who doesn't like Nascar. What about that, hey!

The only reason I made the nes comment was the fact that the guy claimed he had played the game, and was slamming it for one of it's best features: High Res Graphics. Obviously Chuck is very sensitive, since he still plays most of his games on the NES, and considers it "cutting edge" Hear that Chuck? Better attack me, since the above line is considered a threat to the constiution in your world. Chucks Definition of Free Speach: Say anything you want, as long as I approve. Get a clue, and re-read the first ammendment.

DAMN RIGHT. This game is superb. I bought a PSX this weeked to play Ridge Racer and Wipeout because, although I love Papyrus's games, I'm sick of not being able to play in hires (on a 16mb P100). NFS manages two-three times the frame rate on full detail as NASCAR does, if the maths involved in NASCAR cripples it to that extent then maybe I'll settle for a little less realism. To get the same frame rate as NFS, I have to play NASCAR in 320X200. Why should we have to sacrifice graphics for realism. Each car in NFS handles differently, and, I belive, vaguely like the real thing. The NSX is stable and punchy, the Viper loud and tail happy, the 512TR just perfect. And just a note to any vociferous NASCAR lovers (yes, I do enjoy it), don't let's make a big thing of the realism aspect because Papyrus have shown a remarkable lack of ability at modelling tracks (unlike F1GP). Yes, the cars may handle correctly, but the tracks are not correct. Not while we have bent pitlanes, incorrect tri ovals and hair trigger yellow flags. Papyrus are good, but not perfect. Anyway, a better comparison for NFS will be SCREAMER and FATAL RACING when they are released. ================================================================ ================================================================
'BILL' said- I don't mind what you said, but constitution is spelled constitution, not constiution. Duh....... So mush much for your knowledge of it.

Chuck is very "anal" when it comes to spelling, too bad it is him that needs the real help in that department.
