Finding online play for IL-2 and CFS2 flight sims

A racer asked where to find online games for IL-2 Sturmovik and Combat Flight Simulator 2. Members recommended Hyperlobby, All-Seeing Eye and full patching, admitted IL-2's difficulty, and debated whether a HOTAS setup is worth the money compared with racing wheels.

Sorry to go off topic but it DOES concern simming of another kind........WW2 air combat. I have gotten into these games a bit lately and tried to find some online play and cannot seem to find any. Especially IL2......it lists one server and never connects. CFS2 uses MSN as a server but it may be down. Does anyone here play either or both these sims and can help by letting me know of some servers or pages with a list(s) so I can try some online?? Thanks and again, sorry for going out in left field on with this post. V

I also fly many sims- (real life pilot, as well although not current) but have never tried online combat before. I tried just after installing IL-2 Forgotten Battles but couldn't connect either. Something about their server amde me a little leery- maybe it used GameSpy or something, I can't really remember. I would love to try online combat for a change of pace for off line missions. Timmy
Last time I checked All-seeing Eye listed IL-2 games. www.udpsoft.com "V "fnugen"" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:mNH0d.45413$[email hidden]...

Try Hyperlobby. It's the VROC of flight sims. http://hyperfighter.jinak.cz/ Mitch "V "fnugen"" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:mNH0d.45413$[email hidden]...

IL-2 had mega patches, and like Papy servers, you had to be up to snuff on thepatches to use the servers. Make sure you are fully patched from here: http://www.il2sturmovik.com/index.php

I am updated with v1.22. Thanks for the page though, going to be doing some reading and linking now. I kind of figured I'd find some "cross over" simmers here. More likely here than the BF1942 ng I am also on. V "Biz" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:AUI0d.579507$[email hidden]...

The intrepid Achim Trenz, a stalwart of this forum, is also a demon online dogfighter. He was encouraging me to come play w. him in IL-2, but despite the fact that I've written a book abt. flite sims ("PC Pilot"), it quickly became apparent that I don't have the requisite skills to shoot down anything but an unarmed Me-323 troop transport. Hee hee, glad I'm not the only one getting his bits shot off all over the place ;) I just got IL-2 myself on a kinda-sorta rep of being "the GPL of flight sims"; ..good sim, but boy, it's well hard to shoot down anything. These buggers sure want to stay alive and their 'planes seem to be made of Mithril or something <cue Tolkien fans>. For wot it's worth I got blown out of the sky by that lowly ME323 because I quickly found out it was armed and its gunners wanted to eat newbie for breakfast ;) (Did manage to get my first offline kills later (on Day 2) tho; shot down two HE129 ground attack planes from my IL2, and managed to take off & land without wrecking my underpan.. eh undercarriage as well ;) I do feel I need to get a joystick for it though.. it does fly rather cr*ppy with the keyboard, and me GPL wheel just won't cut it either. (Anyone got a good little gameport stick left over? :) Regards, Rudy -------------------- GPLRank: -23

Dunno if it comes in gameport plug, but I use the Logitech Wingman FF stick. I really like it a lot. Paid $70 (CDN) with a $25 rebate a year ago. Check Best Buy, they seemed to have the best price. But I am thinking any decent new stick will likely be USB. Of course, pretty much ANY stick is an improvement over using the keyboard..............*gack*. V

Just buy the cheapest stick you can find. Up Down Left Right is all you need. All the other sticks have an extra knob here and there that break real fast and half the games dont recognize them properly

If you really want to go all out guys, you need to get a hotas setup. Just like sim racing; you get what you pay for equipment-wise. Well, except for the pos TM Cougar anyway. > >

You dont need HOTAS for IL2; I have an X36 And some of the knobs arent configurable unless you program them, and I found myself leaving the throttle on the floor and just using the stick and controlling throttle with the keyboard. The only thing I ever found the knobs useful for was trim, and even then the little notch in the middle prevented small adjustments

You got airborne in IL-2? -Wow! Didn't manage that in 2hrs of trying with my Thrustmaster HOTAS + rudder pedals setup. Then I turned on the relaxed realism settings and found that too arcady, so I unstalled the demo and gave the flightsim hardware to a friend. If I wasn't into race simming as much as I am, I would have persevered with the full version though. It felt very good, I was just too crap at it. Jan. =---

Don't need a wheel/pedal unit for racing sims either, but.......... "Some of the knobs aren't configurable unless you program them...." Um, yes, so ? Same as any stick. But yep, you can definately play most flight sims with a good programmable stick, where you program in whatever functions you want to the various buttons, etc., and use the keyboard for the rest. Just a hell of a lot easier with a hotass; no keyboard at all then.

Yea but when you spend more on a wheel and pedals, the actual quality of them goes up by a lot. When you do the same with a stick and throttle, the $100 one has just as bad plastic parts as the $40 one. Build a Momo Force for airplanes and you'll get my attention.

I run IL2 Forgotten Battles w. Ace Expansion Pack on my system, with the Hotas Cougar and Elite Rudder Pedals. I love the sim, to me it is about the most realistic wwII sim I have flown. I like it much better than CFS3. I do however, have it fairly relaxed in difficulty - that is one thing I really like, you can really tweak the difficulty to about anything you like. -- Don Burnette
