NASCAR 2...Ahem...

NASCAR 2 features and whether cars will flip

A returning reader asked what NASCAR Racing 2 would offer. Users listed redone tracks, a new dashboard and Rendition support, and Ed Martin confirmed cars would not flip because NCR2 lacked 3D physics and NASCAR approval would be needed. Discussion followed on whether flips add anything, with many preferring better AI, qualifying and pit realism.

I haven't been around the USENET community for a few months, so I've missed most of the posts and such about NASCAR 2. I'd like to be informed, if anyone has the time. What is it going to do (over NASCAR and Indycar 2), and when is the projected release date? thanks...
CPDRKITEKT 28 Jun 1996#323623
From what I understand, several tracks are being redone - esp. Talledega to allow 2 wide through the tri-oval - dashboard is redone, cars can flip, multiplayer will be built in, clouds in the sky, and most importantly graphics being written for the new Rendition graphics cards to allow 30+ fps with all graphics on. There are some screenshots that are floating around, check back a few subjects in this group to find a website with them. One other thing I have heard is that all 16 tracks will be available...but that may just be wishful thinking.
One incorrect fact: Cars will not have the ability to flip in NCR2. Heck, your car won't even be able to catch any air. Still looks to be a promising game, though. -- Kenneth http://www.rocket.git.net Rocket Design

Most of what you said is correct. However, cars WILL NOT flip over. 2 problems... that wold require 3D physics which NCR 2 will not have. Also, it would require NASCAR's approval. So, even if we had 3D physics, I think we'd end up with virtual roof flaps to keep the cars from flipping. BTW, all 16 tracks will be in the box. Ed, Who says you can't go 2 wide through tri oval? You just have to plan on the outside car being a *little* thinner going down the front staraight :) Why would NASCAR have to approve flips for a sim? I'm not sure I understand that, and besides, I've always wanted to see the bottom of Labonte's car coming at me at 180+ <G>. On a Viewsonic 21" no less :) On a more serious note, What are these new "Rendition Cards" I keep hearing about? I am getting ready to upgrade from 486/66-dx2 to Pentium 166 and would love for once to buy the right stuff the first time around. However it also has to be good for cad work (ACAD 12 under Windows 3.11) as I have a CAD business on my computer. Thanks for your time, and hang in there. (Can't believe how chidish some of these folks get about how youall do business) they should be glad just to have sims like Nascar Racing. IMHO. BTW: Will N/R 2 have announcer beyond opening screen? No biggie just curious. [snip] Why would NASCAR have to approve flips? Because a car really ISN'T supposed to flip in the real world, thus the roof flaps. It's only in the worst cases when a car does turn itself upside-down. Besides, the problem of programming the 3rd plane to allow for cars to come off of the track is a better reason why we can't have 'flippin cars'. Kyle Langston

Kyle, I can understand the part about programing time, I mean lets face it, we wouldn't want NCR2 to end up running 2-300 bucks (like none of us would pay it <G>) However, as for flipping cars, I'm sure I'm not the only one who has seen (worst case scenarios) on the track. (not a gripe, just a thought) and yes I know it's in a strange place so I treated it very kindly <G> Ron. *********************************************** ** Keep the shiny side up & the hammer down ** *** Ron "Cougar" Riekens II *** **** Owner - Driver **** **** Medallion Motorsports/*** Photography **** *** NASS ARCA Series #96 Pontiac *** ***********************************************

When Ken Schrader flipped (several times) last year at Taledega, did he get into trouble or had he already obtained NASCAR's permission? Gene, Good point, however, there are those of us who live out in the NW that just aren't likely going to make it to taladega this year <G>. That and I probably seem a little cold ***ed about the subject, but after pit crewing for 3 years at a track in OR where the ambulance is a 68 International Travelall, No on sight Oxygen or EMT's, and the most sofisticated fire suppression system in the place consists of 10 5gal buckets of water placed around the track, well, you get the idea. Some of the things I've seen at that track probably have made me a little numb to flips. Like the night 6 late model outlaw stock cars got tangled up with 2 greasy side up, and an *** fuel cell split....<brrrr>. Anyway, it's probaly best that they left ti out, after all, with the way I seem to drive sometimes the last thing I need is a feature that makes for even longer yellows. Actually, I think Kenny was able to get a special dispensation by having Hendricks Motorsports put a little pressure on the NASCAR officials. Bill Elliot was able to get a champions provisional for his airborne stunt at this year's Talladega, but Ricky Craven received a heavy fine for his obviously overdone stunt later in the same race. ;) Dave "davids" Sparks Sequoia Motorsports P.S. What's with all the arcade mentality? You want cars to flip, get NFS or pump a few quarters into Daytona. Personally, I'd rather have things like double file restarts, a flagman on pit road and a few other realistic details that are missing from the game than flipping cars.

Oh, beleive me I want all the reality I can get out of a sim, hence the questions about having *occasional* flips (just like the real cars) are very valid. But really, what do car flips add to the game besides "OOOH...AAAH" effects? Like David, I want things that affect the RACING: random pit stalls, REAL qualifying sessions (which Papyrus said they'll have), more car setup options, and certainly better driver AI (if I get rammed from behind in my pit stall EVERY AGAIN...ARGH!). But Ron, you've got your priorities and I have mine, so, what a useless post this is. :-) -- +------------------+--------------------------------------------+ | G. Oh yeah, I forgot, no mirrors alowed in the cars and no radios, too much blocking you see. Oh, btw: this year they got rid of the water buckets. Needless to say, I stay in the stands now. In fact way back from the wall after last weeks event when an outlaw blew it's oil line going down the front stretch next to the wall at 85mph. Felt sunburned for about 3 days and was sitting in the 3rd row. Heck, they have a web page that I'm about to check out so I can ask them about one other thing. You see, I've debated for 3 years about building a sportsman car. But in their rules/build sheet it says the usual, stock appearing, no slab sides, cast manifolds, no coil overs or 5 link or quick change rears. However, about 2/3 of the class is running, you guessed it, slab sides, 5 links, quick change, coil overs, aluminum intakes etc, etc. Ron R II *********************************************** ** Keep the shiny side up & the hammer down ** *** Ron "Cougar" Riekens II *** **** Owner - Driver **** **** Medallion Motorsports/*** Photography **** *** NASS ARCA Series #96 Pontiac *** ***********************************************

Not useless at all, in fact I appreciate the chance to see other peoples view of things. And in retrospect I fully agree with you. The ohh ahh's are ok, but it's the overall experience that matters most. And givin a choice between gameplay or oh ah gameplay wins every time in my book. No, the damn server I'm on is screwing up massively the last few weeks. It keeps showing that posts aren't getting through when they are. Just wrote them about it still trying to get bugs worked out. If it keeps up methinks it will be time to change services even if others here localy are twice the money for same features. <shrug> >Pushed that send button a few too many times eh? *********************************************** ** Keep the shiny side up & the hammer down ** *** Ron "Cougar" Riekens II *** **** Owner - Driver **** **** Medallion Motorsports/*** Photography **** *** NASS ARCA Series #96 Pontiac *** ***********************************************

well personally i don't care if the cars will flip but what i'd like to see is drivers like say dale earnhardt start about 24th at alanta and come charging through the field and be up to 2nd and on my rookie driver who was lucking enough to quilify 1st ***<g> and push me oughta the way and take the lead. that would be cool also some way of remebering season championships so if you or an ai driver wins the champ he pits in the location he so desires. also something i like about f1gp1 the ability to run several seasons at once maybe (bush, arca, winston cup, ect...) This is accually a questions for Ed Martin and if Ed gets this message he can write yes or no next to the questions about Nascar2. Will roof flaps come up in crashes........ Minor and Major Breakage........ If you can't run fast enough you don't qualify......... Is there going to be Provisional starts in this race........... Damage on the door's and the side of the car.......... If car's are really bad will they be sent to the garage for repair........ On the back show the full cell and battery........ You can tape thing's up so you don't go a lap down......... Lap cars on the inside of you............. Pit accourding to where you qualify.......... Show a reel of qualifying highlight's so we know what's other people are doing......... Penalty's for rough driving........ Pit crew's jump over the wall.......... Drive into the winner's circle.......... If your motor blows up you see the smoke coming out of the back of the car........ Not a lot of stupid little caution's........ All the new track's pavment........ Straight pit lanes for Tally and C***te........ Have the Nightime races start out in the dusk and then goes into Dark...... Spotters and Crew Chiefs talk to you during the race...... Have the weather change during Qualifying and the Race........... And finally have event's shortened by rain........ They may sound like suggestions but all you have to do is write yes or no if there going to be in Nascar 2.
