Hi Ed Can you tell us if NASCAR 2 has any new setup variables, i.e. springs, etc., not available in NASCAR 1? Chuck Stuart - Mesquite TX USA Hawaii: ChuckStuart(7)

This is a good question, however, I think I remember Ed saying that they weren't changing the physics model. That said, I would like to see them replace tire stagger with another adjustment, such as individual spring and shock adjustments, or a track bar adjustment. Many people don't know, but, with the introduction of radial tires, the teams lost the ability to adjust tire stagger. A radial tire doesn't "grow" when air is added like a bias-ply tire does. Therefore, the teams are stuck with whatever stagger Goodyear builds into the tires. Changing air pressure in a radial DOES change the spring rate of the tire. In fact, I saw Ray Evernham demonstrating this on ESPN. One pound of air pressure changes the spring rate of the tire (that's the stiffness of the sidewall) some 10 to 15 lbs! Needless to say, this has a huge effect on handling. This may be something for Papyrus to consider for NASCAR 3! :-) Pat ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pat Campbell The Chevy Monte Carlo 6,94,88,16,4,25 Lexington, AL NASCAR's Wide Load War Eagle!!! Pardon my ignorance, but isn't stagger created by using a physically larger tire? Simply over-inflating a tire to enlarge it would wreak havoc in setting up, and they'd be overheating in the middle, no...???? Would Goodyear not ship sets of various sized tires for the teams to choose from? Neil -- Meek and obedient you follow the leader down well trodden corridors into the valley of steel.. You are correct, they still use staggerred tires, and they are physically different. >-- >Meek and obedient you follow the leader >down well trodden corridors into the valley of steel.. > Neil Yeatman, Ajax, Ontario, CANADA

Simply over-inflating a tire to enlarge it would wreak >havoc in setting up, and they'd be overheating in the middle, no...???? I've always wondered how they controlled the heating on the bias-plys, but, believe it or not, that's how they changed the stagger on them. Before a pit stop, you would see a crewman measuring the circumference with a tape, and applying air to get the size he wanted. In IndyCar, I think they do have sets with various staggers built in for the teams to try out. I'm 99% sure, however, that for NASCAR, they only have one stagger available to the teams. And, it's probably not Goodyear's decision--it more than likely is NASCAR's. To quote Bobby Labonte when someone asked him how they changed stagger, "Well, we get whatever Goodyear gives us these days." The crews cannot change that. Goodyear does not bring a variety of staggered tires for the crews
to choose from. Whatever they bring the teams are stuck with.

With bias ply tires, they could just over-inflate to get the same effect. As P.Campbell notes, this doesn't work with radials, it just stiffens the sidewalls. However, tire pressure can have a tremendous effect on handling, and many times, they will make handling adjustments with just tire pressure. I'm pretty sure that that Goodyear provides all the teams with the same tires. Sometimes they will bring a couple of different compounds, but I think the stagger is the same on all the sets. Here's a definitive answer from Larry McReynolds on tires: Tires are the "one common denominator between all 40-some teams out there," says Larry McReynolds, crew chief and chassis expert at Robert Yates Racing. "The construction, stagger and compound are the same for everybody. Last year, there was a choice out there for some teams (Hoosier), but that's one factor that's gone now."
