Proposal for a Hawaii racers' convention in Boston

A Hawaii racer joked that it might be cheaper to travel to Boston, Papyrus's local dial-in, than pay long distance bills, which grew into enthusiastic plans for a sim racing convention with LAN stations and NASCAR drivers. Ed Martin replied that they did sound a little nuts. Later posts compared long-distance calling plans.

Automated summary.

A friend and I were recently discussing how much fun we've had racing on Hawaii, and the large phone bills involved, and came across a rather disturbing idea. Since summer is the time for vacations, namely ROAD TRIPS, we discussed heading out from our hometown of Omaha, NE to catch a Winston Cup race. We couldn't decide on a particular race, so I mentioned why not all of them?(minus a few :( ) The stupified look I received made me laugh. Why not pack up the computer equipment, driving wheels, etc. and drive to Boston? Yes, that's right, Boston, MA. Land of local telephone calls to multiplayer Nascar Racing! I figure it'd take 2-3 days driving time each way, rent two hotel rooms(gotta have two phone lines), and spend LARGE amounts of time racing. The money we'd save in local phone calls versus LD could pay for the trip! Are we truly insane? Who knows, maybe Papyrus will let us visit their offices! <G> David Range DJR or Dave_R on Hawaii
How about a Travel Agency booking to Boston we could charter a Trailways up and back and Have a Papyrus Weekend with a Nascar Driver on the trip!!! Spend 3 fun filled days at the Marriott and return home for work on Monday. Anyone in the Southeast interested.Maybe even find a sponsor for the trip..Hello Budweiser are you out there??? Cost of trip would not even come close to Phone Bill...tell the wife your saving money by going. You can tell your friends your heading for Hawaii !!! See ya on the Bus :)

Okay, we're all officially out of control now. This does sound like a great idea though. Can you imagine a convention center hall full of NASCAR ***s racing together like this? We probably wouldn't have to worry about simulating injuries after someone takes out half the field at 'Dega, it'd be just like Michael Waltrip and Lake Speed at the Michigan race last year. Wonder if Ed Martin would be willing to come by and issue those famous words "Gentlemen, start your simulators". Just make sure there are plenty of ashtrays and beer coolers. [snip] Ed, are you reading this??? This would be a FANTASTIC roll-out promo for NR2 and the NRL. A convention center type layout with about 100 driving stations. Maybe get Gordon, Craven, Bobby Labonte and some other WC guys to come out. Have Benny Parsons call a race while it's shown on a projection TV, exclusive coverage by RPM2night. You can even have (or better have) the NRL equivalent to Miss Winston there for trophy presentations. Anyway, for the marketing help all I ask is a free copy of NR2 :) Matt Myers --------------------------------------------- Expressing individualism is just plain wrong. Crow T. Robot

A better way to do this would be to set up centers in Detroit, Chicago, Dallas, LA, SF, NY....etc.. tied into a server in each site.(heat races and such) Local winners would advance... Then the winners could pair off on the real NRL ( hawaii) (through the fast connection low latency network hawaii is looking into) to race the long feature with CocaCola supplying a purse of $50K... This could work. No charge Ed... just make sure I'm included!! Tim Daley 59 Chevy Biscayne

There's nothing wrong with the idea, but if everyone's going to Boston to race, then why do we need a modem multiplayer racing series ? We'll just direct connect everyone's computers since everyone will be there. :) And don't forget to hire some security at the hotel when someone obliterates half the drivers there ( imagine Donnie Allison-Cale Yarborough times 100 ! ) It'll be like WWF !! Not nuts, just ***ed... -

(SNIP) Let's start the ball rolling. How many people would be interested in attending a Hawaii racers convention in Boston? If possible please include the best available time you could attend, and any ideas that you may have that would add to the enjoyment of the convention. Maybe an outing to see the Red Sox, etc. I'm not familiar with Boston, so any ideas on the best place to stay, eat, etc. If possible please e-mail me with the info. Hey Ed, is there a way to include a mention of this in the MOTD page on Hawaii? I'm sure not all of the racers read r.a.s., and it'd make it easier to get the word out instead of in the chat rooms. I realize this is just a shot in the dark, but think of the posibilities! David Range

I for one would have to buy the "NR2 - Mega Virtual Velocity" shirt. I bet NASCAR would even jump in to fund a big chunk of something along these lines, and their PR budget has to be gargantuan! This is a good Idea, HOWEVER, This is only a good Idea for those that live near Boston. I would gladly attend, and boston is only maby ten hours drive for me, but then 10 hours=alot of miles wich = alot of gas/ the stay there meens hotl bills wich = some money wich would equal an empty wallet for the trip home. All for what? You mention nothing on any idea for what would be availible there. You might want to mention some kind of activity or a cause for the convention. Like I said "It is a good Idea, but, what would we all do there.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but "cause for the convention?" HAWAII! What else do you need? Since I live in Nebraska (which is longer than ten hours), I'm not familiar with Boston. But it seems there should be plenty to do. Maybe they have a Malibu Grand Prix center that we could show off our real driving talents. <G> Or see a baseball game. Who knows, maybe Papyrus will show up and run a few races. Remember, this is just to see if there is enough interest in organizing some type of gathering. A place where we can discuss strategies in person with good food, plenty of beer, and free Hawaii racin'. Can anyone in Boston gives us more info on what to do, or see there? David Range

I'm sure the influx of visitors to Boston using the Hawaii service (for extended periods of time thanks to the local number) would do wonders for the load on the race servers. Kyle Langston

> I'm sure the influx of visitors to Boston using the Hawaii service >(for extended periods of time thanks to the local number) would do >wonders for the load on the race servers. >Kyle Langston <Sigh> It must be r.a.s. Gotta be. Does the whinning from other threads procreate to all other threads? To answer your question. NO. As you know, the majority of the racing being done on Hawaii is during the evening/late evening or weekends because of cheaper long distance rates. A convention is usually run during the DAYTIME. Besides Hawaii is in BETA test to see if the servers can handle the load, etc. Again, I asked for other ideas from local Bostonians for excursions, etc. But it appears there's not enough interest, simply whines, so I'll let the idea pass, and hope Papyrus decides to sponsor a convention at the unveiling of the NRL. Thanks to all who posted suggestions, and I hope to see you on Hawaii! David Range

Why? Just because we want to spend several hundred dollars traveling clear across the country to spend the weekend shut up in a motel convention room breathing second hand smoke, listening to a bunch of drunks yelling *** at each other and arguing over which track to drive next, in order to save $5.40 an hour in long distance charges? whoChuck Stuart - Mesquite TX USA Hawaii: ChuckStuart

Its simple, sign up for a sprint Business account and spend a minimum of 200 dollars per month on a month- to- month contract and pay 14.7 cents per min all day, every day except on fridays which are scott free. I race 8-10 hours or more every friday. Why take a vacation and go to MA? Just trade work on Fridays for work on Sundays. Mean while, when I'm not racing on fridays, I broadcast fax from my list of sales prospects-FREE ! Hope this helps, CT Hawaii: cole "If you don't like the way I drive, stay off the sidewalk"

If I may correct you on that line about Sprint, (I recently switched over) Sprint informed me that after a year, I will get a 10% rebate on my LD bills, which resolves itself to $.09/minute. (Switch to sprint! They gave me 100 free minutes!) (And No I don't work for spring!) They're not bugs! They're random features!
