Speculation about Papyrus's historical racing sim and wish lists

After a Papyrus interview hinted at a game with 'a historical flavor', posters cited a Sierra InterAction magazine mention of 1960s open-wheel racing. The thread turned into wish lists for classic tracks, 1960s sports cars, touring cars, street racing and drag racing, with debate over whether a drag racing sim could be fun. Later posts noted Papyrus's PC conversion of EA's Road Rash.

A throw back to the open wheeled racing of the '60s." Something like that. Never could get anyone from Papyrus to answer any questions about it for me though. Judging from their past, I'd expect it out about 6 months after Nascar 2, I wonder when Indycar 3's gonna come out. - S - S

I can almost guarantee that a '60s style game WILL come out. If you have InterAction (Sierra publication) with Randy Johnson on the front, turn to the Papyrus section (pg. 71). Look at the drawing board to your right with the words "(Above) Sandro Carella shows of the depth of planning that goes into racing simulations." Look at the artist's drawings behind, you'll see very old helmets and Indycars racing. This is almost a guarantee. Well, the only problem with this kind of game is that the cars just won't have any performance. Recently (past month or so) I saw a show on ESPN2 where Emerson Fittipaldi was driving one of the Diamond-Star cars around a track and noting that todays street cars make better race cars than race cars from 25 years ago. Given this, how can I get e***d about driving an OLD car?! IMHO, Papyrus would do much better to channel their energies towards an F1 sim than something that few of us can relate to. Clark

I think few of us could really relate to driving an F1 car at the speeds the drivers do. We can however relate to sliding around on snow, gravel and having tires that are only about 6" across. I think you should wait to make your judgement about this. This is something we asked for a long time ago... to drive cars when you could slide them around the corners in a four wheel drift.. when the racing equation was more balanced between man and machine. i think the point Emerson was making that the technology is obviously better today so the car does more for you rather than you being able to carry the car with technique. OK, but please also through in a couple of street cars like the Toyota Corolla and the Geo Metro so we can see how they compare. And mayme a Dodge Caravan, too!. Clark
Has anyone seen the new STB 128 Lightspeed. This is a 128 bit card that uses a new technology called multi bank dram (MDram). This totaly opens the bandwith to allow Dram to run faster then the Vram card (of non multi bdank format). This is the fastest card the PC World has tested lists for $229 (comperable price to the Dimons Stealth 64) and I have seen Quantex has started to ship this with it high end pentiums. It looks like the end of the 64 bit card is now! Jared

If anyone out there has ever watched a BTCC,Aussie or Euro Touring Car Race, you'd have to agree that it is extremely competitive, racy, and is an amazing spectacle to watch...It's real racing by the seat of the pants, with alot door banging and outmanouvering...A real DRIVERS race! Yes...that would be right at home in a drag racing sim. I can't believe that no major game company has picked up on the simple fact that NHRA drag racing is probably second only to NASCAR in terms of growth in the USA. NHRA also more nationwide appeal as they race in more parts of the country than does NASCAR. For example, NASCAR has only one race in Texas (and that just starts next year) as NHRA by that time will have four national events here...and 100,000+ drag racing fans that attend each event certainly can't be wrong. All I have to say is that the first game publisher to actually realize that most of the domestic market wouldn't give a game like GP2 a second thought once a GOOD drag racing sim came out stands to make a LOT of money. Personally, I don't care to play a computer game of any sport I can't go watch live and F1 doesn't race anywhere near here. :) Kevin

writes "Most" of the domestic market?! Really? I may be in the UK, but even from here I would have thought drag racing is virtually dictionary definition of "niche". I'm not a particular NASCAR fan (the sport), but I enjoy running NASCAR because it's fun to drive - loose, door-to-door, pitstops. You know - "driving". Drag-racing is "who can go fastest down a straight road". Where's the fun in that? Don't get me wrong, if you like it and someone makes it, I'm very happy for you. I personally would race farm vehicles if someone made a sim, but nothing on earth would entice me to buy a drag sim, and I think that the talents of Papyrus would be wasted on something as unsubtle as that. No offence intended, but it's my strong opinion. Cheers! I'd really like to see Papyrus do a "build your own" game. Design your own tracks (how's about a 5 mile long 'dega, or a track like NH with banking like Bristol... or a 1/4 mile short track... or a flat Daytona... or an SCCA-type parking lot track with orange cones). And design your own cars (Want 2000 HP, no problem. Why not run a top fuel funny car around a closed course. Or a high powered go-cart?) Or see how your street car might do at Michigan. Rain. Tires. Track surfaces (maybe dirt!). I really dont't think this would be a big stretch for them... quite simply, a track editor, and a car editor. That's it. The internet being the way it is now, I could see people creating all sorts of very accurate vehicles for people to use. It certainly could be a bit less serious than the current sims out there, but sure would be a lot of fun. Another cool thing would be a city simulator, sort of like MS Flight Simulator, except on the ground. Imagine ripping around NYC at rush hour (as if that's any sort of stretch). -Steve -- ***************************************************************************** Steve Owen "While you sleep, I am plotting world domination." http://members.aol.com/StevenOwen/steve.htm NASCAR, Concerts, Counters & More *****************************************************************************

Yes, I had the same game running on my Apple II GS back about 8-9 years ago. I also had Shirley Muldowney's Top Fuel Eliminator on my Commodore 64 about 10 years ago. I really liked Shirley Muldowney because it had a clock and a bank account, along with good graphics. If you won your race but broke your ride while doing so, you better hope you can fix it in the 90 (simulated) minutes between races and that you have the cash for it. If not, you didn't make the next round (just like real life). I haven't had or seen a drag racing game since then. Both were very fun games...I can't understand why no one has made one since. Even Dragster on my Atari 2600 fif*** years ago was a decent game. Kevin
<snip> : Well, the only problem with this kind of game is that the cars just won't have : any performance. The 60's IndyCars had enough performance to be called racecars. I think 150 mph lap record was done in 1962 or 1963. Today's Nascars reach 170+ mph (Brickyard), and I haven't seen complaints that they are too slow for being used in racing simulator. I don't know what the IndyCar lap record was later in 60's, 160-170 mph? It might also be worth noting, that 60's was quite long period in racing terms. From early front engined cars, through rear engine design to late 60's wedge shaped turbine cars and 4 wheel drive... : Given this, how can I get e***d about driving an OLD car?! Old cars means old tracks with "safety last" design;-) : IMHO, Papyrus would do much better to channel their energies towards : an F1 sim than something that few of us can relate to. <snip> We already have excellent F1 simulator. At least I'm satisfied if Papyrus makes something new for the sim players. Pasi.
Tony, Tony, Tony - you know me well enough to know that the Winter Olympics will be held in Hades on the day that I change my tune :) Seriously, for me the joy in racing is the "on the edge" stuff, jousting for the line into the corner with another car, using brake, steering and throttle to balance the car on the edge of oversteer or understeer, picking a line through a chicane and barrelling through. Watching for the lights and crashing up through the gears as fast as possible is something I do every time I have a race in GP2 - then I'm at the first corner and have all the other fun in front of me (or behind me if I've made a good 'un!!). I'd love to be proved wrong, but I honestly see no way that I could be enticed toward a drag racing sim. It's not a sport I would even watch on TV never mind go to see or buy a sim, it just doesn't grab me in the joy department the way Indycars, NASCARs, F1 cars, greyhound buses, famr vehicles or supermarket trolleys do. As I understand it, the order of popularity of racing in the US is 1 NASCAR 2 NHRA racing (drag racing) 3 Indycar An average person in the US has no idea what "F1" is, and "Indycar" just means the Indy500. But drag racing sim... I'm not knowledgable about drag racing, but I could imagine a sim being done well, and it being popular here. It would have almost no relation to the sorts of things GP2, ICR2, or NASCAR are about- It would probably have to be intensely graphics and audio oriented. It would be an interesting challenge to make- no need to worry about AI, no huge, meandering tracks to digitize and fit in to memory. Just fantastic graphics speed for a short time, and trying to convey accelleration to the user- tough. All in all, it would probably share more programming in common with some of the bowling sims that are pretty popular here, than with another racing sim.

C'mon, blown Offenhausers on skinny tires should be a truly thrilling simulation experience. I remember when rear-engine cars with fat tires came along, many people felt the 'improvements' made watching racing about exciting as watching slot cars. I'd definitely be a purchaser. Oh, yes. Throw in the Mille Miglia and a big front-engined Merc and I'd pay large dollars. Quite right. Drags would be the ultimate niche product. The three obvious contenders would be rally (not an American favourite, though, so not likely for Papyrus), dirt (would sure be different!) or some form of sedan/saloon car racing (but it would feel an awful lot like Nascar III, wouldn't it?) Personally, I'd love to see the historical game and then a sprint-midget game. Yeeha! Kurt Sanders

Really? Drag racing more popular than Indycar? I'd have to disagree. I mean, on TV does drag racing get live coverage or do they even have races on a major network ( ABC, CBS, NBC )? I do agree F1 means nothing to most Americans. I'd care more if Micheal S. ( Can't spell his last name ) could finish a race. -- B.J. Dole/Kemp in '96! I hate the Macarena!

That's what I've heard too. NASCAR is first, closely followed by NHRA. NASCAR also holds more races (31 or so) than NHRA (20 or so), but NHRA runs in more of the country than NASCAR, which helps to make the fan base much more diverse. And, trust me, the NHRA crowds I've seen live are just as diverse as any I've seen on tv at a NASCAR race. ABC shows some races a week or two later. The final rounds of some major national races (U.S. Nationals, etc.) are shown live on TNN. Drag racing doesn't lend itself well to live TV coverage, as there is about 90 minutes between the pro rounds and if someone blows an engine and oils the track down, you get to watch 30-45 minutes of the Safety Safari in action cleaning the track. To me, F1 is just a key on my keyboard. Doesn't everyone? Kevin

That would be great!!! Another cool idea would be to revisit the concept of the program STREET ROD which started you out with $1200 and let you buy a used car through the paper and soup it up and race it on the streets. Chevelles, Talladegas, Vettes etc. Would be a really cool concept on Hawaii; challenging people to drags for their pink slips > : Or how about a simulation of the Ford GT40's, MKII's and Cobras > : contesting the Ferraris and Porsches for the GT and Prototype > : Championships in the mid 60's. They ran endurance races on many of these > : tracks.

Street Rod II was AWESOME! An update to that concept using today's graphics and processor speed would be great. When you raced your car in Street Rod, you were racing "your" own car - because you had pieced it together yourself. And because of "aging" of parts and equipment, no two cars were ever alike. Modem/multiplayer play would let competitors brag about their cars - and then pit them against one another.

And with a T2...heaven. Just imagine me in my Big block Dodge Dart against your Vette i would kill you in a drag race but throw a corner in there ala a street race then look out! me thinks that if you could make the game sound good and look like Need for Speed you would have a best seller. Road and Track got behind NFS so how about one of the Musclecar or Hot Rod mags getting into this idea. Gene

I just received a card in the mail from Papyrus for a game called Road Rash. It's a motorcycle/combat game that has graphics similiar to the type used in NFS. Is this something just heard of, or has this been in discussion for awhile? Also, is it a given that their next simulation will be on 4 tires..? Just curious

I don't know if it's been discussed, but EA's "Road Rash" is a straight-up *arcade* racer co-developed by Papyrus. Native Win95, excellent graphics, multiplayer capabilities, (pretty fun) but very "arcade"-like, NOT a simulator. (NFS is a better racing sim than RR). No***pit view, no rear-view mirrors, easy recovery from accidents. I believe there is a demo available... -- ******CIS: 75023,1317 | WB Handle: "alfa" |**************** put your message in a modem, And throw it to the *** Sea... ****************************************Neal Peart*********** > I just received a card in the mail from Papyrus for a game called Road Rash. > It's a motorcycle/combat game that has graphics similiar to the type used > in NFS. Also, is it a given that their next simulation will be on 4 tires..? >Just curious I think Papyrus did the RoadRash conversion from console to the PC for Elecronic Arts the same company that put out NFS. You can find a Win95 playable demo of roadrash at http://www.ea.com/eastudios/roadrash/html/winhome.html Not bad for an arcade game, I do wish the view was from behind the throttle and not from behind the driver. It's worth a look. Cheers. --John -- ------------------- John (Joao) Silva http://weber.u.washington.edu/~jsilva Seattle, Washington USA.

There's also been discussion about what the next auto sim they'll put out will be. IIRC, the official comment was that they're working on 3 games now but can't say what they are. -Mike, who is finding it harder and harder to wait for NASCAR 2
