I too could not connect to Hawaii with a sportster. Called Hawaii Tech and the told me that most Sportsters are not compatible. So I bought a Cardinal and had no problems since.

The cheaper USRobotics Winmodems will not work in a DOS environment. They require Windows drivers to function. I have an older Sportster and have had no trouble connecting to Hawaii or modem racing. -- Emory University Graduate School of Arts & Sciences Nascar Setups Page: http://userwww.service.emory.edu/~ebusch/

I think I use AT&F1 &M0 &K0 M0, but I'm not at the machine, so I can't check it. You want to be sure to turn off error correction and compression. I've used both a USR Sportster 14.4 and a 28.8 DSVD and they both work great. Out of over 100 races, I've only been booted about 3 times.
