New Asus A7N8X build shuts down after seconds

Steve Smith's new Athlon system on an Asus A7N8X Deluxe powered up and then shut itself off within seconds without posting. Suggestions ranged from RAM compatibility and a dead board to BIOS resets and fan headers, until an nForce forum FAQ pointed to Asus's CPU overheat protection. He found the heatsink and fan had not been seated properly and admitted the mistake.

Need some help here. Building a new rig. Got an Athlon 2700+ from a friend, bought an Asus A7N8X Deluxe mobo to go with it. Installed the chip, a vid card (nVid 5200 Ultra), and 2 sticks of Corsair 3200 RAM, Antec 350W PSU, went to boot it up...no joy. Nada-zilch-fogeddaboudit; not even a vid card sign on splash screen. (PSU powered up the fans and the PSU LED.) Swapped out all the components except the CPU and the mobo; everything else works fine. Bought another chip (Athlon XP 3000+), plugged it in. Now the PSU comes on for abt. 5 sec., then shuts down. Still no GPU sign-on screen. WTF? What am I doing wrong? I must've built a dozen 'putas by now, and I've never seen anything like THIS. Anybody got any ideas? --Steve
This is a quick reply......without having time to check my notes and confirm.....sorry I'm late getting out to the track. But...... Sounds like a ram problem. Is the Corsair ram rated for that mobo? Some Corsair sticks won't work in it (even though the ASUS site says they will....don't believe it.....check their boards for what will and will not work). I have two of these mobo's by the way (with Corsair ram in both, but not the kind you are using). Do you have them in the correct slots? You have to have them in #2 and #3 (not #1) for some reason...but can't remember it right at this moment, without checking my install notes. Achim Trensz......fairly regular on here, knows these mobo's backwards and forward. Try making a post to him or email him direction at: [email hidden] Sorry I can't be more specific or helpful.....but hopefully this will get you started down the right path of discovery. Achim knows his stuff on these boards.....he'll have you up and running quickly, I bet you! Regards, Tom

Do you have a slow speed fan on the Heat Sink ? The board may be shutting down because it cannot read the fan signal on the CPU1 fan header. You can press a key, insert maybe ? don't remember which, to bypass this, then turn it off in the BIOS. Asus's website should have the details for this
Thanks, Tom, I'll check it out (I can steal 2 sticks of PC3200 RAM from my FragBox). "Tom Pabst" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:SJWJc.89705$JR4.66549@attbi_s54...

Thanks, KH. I did check the fan connections at one point, but I can't remember under what circumstances. Will try again. "KingsHead" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:40f8446f$0$385$[email hidden]...

Sounds like a bad MoBo to me......it happens :/, what you can do is reset the BIOS, either by using the reset jumper, if it has one, I can't remember, or removing the BIOS battery and unplug it from the power chord, usually takes a few hours so you might want to let it sit overnight Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy "goyl at nettx dot no" http://www.theuspits.com "A man is only as old as the woman he feels........" --Groucho Marx--
Goy, If it's a bad mobo, what's the point of resetting the BIOS? I've never had the mobo in operation, so I don't know what the BIOS settings are...but I can't see that it makes much difference if I can't even get as far as the BIOS. --Steve "Goy Larsen" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Hi again Tom, According to the Asus Website, the A7N8X Deluxe wants Corsair CMX512-3200C RAM...which is exactly what was in there. Nonetheless, I "borrowed" 2 sticks of RAM from the Fragbox. No joy. Same thing: fans would spool up, but 5 sec. later, the mobo would shut itself off. ...and KingsHead, I made damn sure the CPU fan was hooked up to the appropriate header. It is. I can't follow your suggestion to hold down the DEL key during boot-up to access the BIOS 'cuz it doesn't boot. No vid-card sign-on, no nuthin. Just 5 sec. of fan activity, then silence. And a very dark screen. I will try clearing the BIOS, as per Goy's suggestion. I don't think the PSU (brand new) is the prob, but I will put the DMM on it and see if its producing appropriate voltages. Thanks again, guys. --Steve "Steve Smith" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:brYJc.46656$[email hidden]...

Steve, I have to agree with Goy on this one. The first A7N8X Deluxe I purchased was DOA, as was the one a buddy of mine got too. After multiple attempts to reset the bios with no luck (the board wouldn't even post), I returned the board for another one and it booted up immediately. I've spent a fair amount of time on the amdmb forums and it seems as though Asus has had a bit of a quality control problem for a while now soooooo... don't beat your head against the wall for too long trying to get it to boot. If resetting the bios doesn't help you may just have to grab yourself another board and try again. Oh, and trying to get e-mail support from Asus is paramount to trying to push a rope up hill...Good luck, you'll need it. lol -- See ya in the pits, Dean I have a terrible memory. In fact my memory's so bad I can't remember how long it's been since I've forgotten anything. Steve do you have the power switch jumper from the case frontpanel to the mobo power pins? You cant use a regular jumper or it will shutdown as you describe after a short period. If I dont have the mobo in a case then leave the jumper off and use a screwdriver or something similar to momentarily short the pins to fire it up. One other note is that AMD CPU's are notoriously fragile when mounting the heatsink/fan. Take a close look at the CPU and be sure you havent damaged it. If it were memory then the mobo should make some beeping noises. As others have said, its either the mobo or perhaps its earthing somewhere. You have checked the bios jumper on the mobo to make sure its not set to clear cmos. -- Pete Ives Remove ALL_STRESS before sending me an email
Mitch, Yes, it's in a case (Antec), and the power switch (when pushed) does start the PSU. If I take out the CPU and turn it on (in which case it does NOT shut down in a coupla sec.), the power switch will turn it off when held in for 4-5 sec., as it's supposed to, otherwise I might suspect the switch was shorted out. I may try yer screwdriver trick just to make sure. At first, I had the sink & fan mounted on the CPU, since I wasn't anticipating any trouble. With all the troubleshooting, I dismounted the sink/fan from the CPU and have left it plugged in but upside down next to the CPU, assuming that the CPU won't overheat in 30-60 sec. When, as, and if I ever get it to boot as far as the vid sign-on and BIOS, I will shut it down and remount it on the CPU. --Steve "Mitch_A" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:rl0Kc.93125$[email hidden]... > Steve do you have the power switch jumper from the case frontpanel to the > mobo power pins? A dead batt usually just reverts the board to the BIOS defaults (i.e., if you make any changes, it doesn't save them); it usually doesn't prevent the board from at least completing the POST. Thanks Pete. Yes, I checked all the jumpers (and reconnected the case connectors) just to make sure. Even if the BIOS jumper had been set to clear, it shouldn't prevent some POST beeps. Thus far, the board has been quiet as a churchmouse. AMD CPU's cook in about 2 secs flat........never EVER run an AMD without proper cooling, if you haven't cooked your CPU it's pure luck, you can do this with Intel CPU's but not with AMD's....... Well, if it's a *bad* bad MoBo, then resetting the BIOS won't help, but resetting the BIOS makes the MoBo run at "safe" settings for everything and an a bad MoBo may be able to boot up at say 100FSB even if it won't boot at 133/166/200, it's just a shot in the dark as you'll need to return the MoBo anyways, but without getting it to boot it's difficult to do any real troubleshooting I've had plenty of RAM, MoBo's and CPU's that won't run at their intended speed Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy "goyl at nettx dot no" http://www.theuspits.com "A man is only as old as the woman he feels........" --Groucho Marx--
Sid, Thanks for the link to the nForce forum. Found this gem amongst the FAQs: ************** Q. My computer boots up and shuts down after a few seconds. Whats the deal? A. This is ASUS COP (overheat protection) kicking in so you dont fry your CPU. Be thankful that you are not out buying a new processor right now. Make sure your heatsink is mounted correctly, there is a raised part on the socket with the letters "socket 462" on it, there is also a notched out, or indentation on one side of the heatsink, this notched out piece fits over the raised area of the socket. If you put your heatsink on incorrectly the heatsink will NOT touch the CPU core and can cause this issue. For a graphic demonstration of how to place your heatsink on our CPU check out TomsHardware. The top picture shows the raised part of the socket (on the far left) and the notched out part of the heatsink (also on the far left). ************** This seems to be what's going on, BUT as far as I can see, the heatsink IS mounted properly (at least, it looks like the illustrations @ the TomsHardware site). Is there any way to disable the COP feature to see if that's what's causing the prob? --Steve P.S. This forum and some strong comments here: http://www.sudhian.com/showdocs.cfm?aid=565 (highly recommended reading) make it sound like the A7N8X Deluxe's SoundStorm audio is better than the Audigy 2 CZ and the mAudio Revolution combined! Yer point is well taken, Goy, but 1. the mobo hasn't even gotten to the POST, much less the BIOS, Windows, or any apps, so I don't think it's running at full chat, and 2. it's not even warm to the touch. Nonetheless, I will securely mount the fan (a Zalman copper model that weighs more than my lifetime penny collection) to the CPU w. Artic Silver. Having cooked a couple of AMD cpu's I can vouch for the speed with which the expire. This COP thingy sounds neat but it could be interfering with the boot process. I wonder, have you used the included sticky adesive tape or some Artic Silver heat goop? Spreading too much goop is just as bad as too little. dh
Hi Dave, Asus has a movie on their site of a CPU expiring. The chip (an AMD, natch) actually gets quite hot before it smokes, but it takes longer than 30 sec. from a cold start. I wasn't planning to run the thing w/o a fan, but I wanted to see if it would boot w/o it. It wouldn't. I have reattached the HSF. The thermal tape is certainly a lot easier to apply w. any precision than the paste, but I've used the paste enuf times to be a fairly good judge. It's not as demanding as, say, welding. Everybody sez the paste is a lot more effective than the tape, or I would've been using the latter in the first place. BTW, I've never toasted a CPU (full disclosure: I haven't done any overclocking since 1994). A Google search of the user groups has convinced me that this "rogue COP" phenom is common enuf that it's prolly a bad mobo, not inexperience on my part. Hence, I think I will take it to my local ('puta) hot rod shop and let them handle it. I'm getting to old for this, as they say in every buddy flick made in the past 25 years. --Steve "Dave Henrie" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Did I say this already? Apologies all around! The difficulties I was experiencing with my brand new A7NX8 DeLuxe (Asus' COP protection feature would shut down the board within 5 sec. of the time it was started) were entirely of my own making. I mistakenly thought I had installed the HSF (heat sink/fan) correctly, but nooooooo. Actually, the first time I installed it was right...but it was on a bad CPU. When I installed the 2nd CPU, I inadvertently rotated the base of the heat sink 180 deg., so that it was resting on the step-up shown on the left side of this picture: http://www17.tomshardware.com/howto/20020918/diy_2-05.html Once I got it turned the right way 'round, the board fired right up. Doh! I'm so ashamed.... Anyway, thanks one & all fer all yer help. And for persisting w. what ultimately emerged as the proper solution to my "problem." --Mea Culpa "Dean Purdy" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:xmBKc.60095$[email hidden]...

Altho, it's not like I was going to RUN the frickin thing w/o a fan. I just wanted to see if the CPU and mobo actually WORKED, yadda-yadda. Putting my hair shirt back on.
