Nascar2 Joystick

NASCAR 2 joystick not detected under Windows 95 OSR2

A user's joystick did not work when NASCAR Racing 2 was launched from Windows 95. Others identified the OEM 'B' (OSR2) build as the likely cause, and Jim Sokoloff confirmed that Microsoft's changed joystick drivers had broken the game and that Papyrus was investigating; running from DOS was the workaround. Eric Busch had it working under OSR2, which led to a testy exchange, and installing Microsoft's Sidewinder 1.5 software fixed it for some users but not all.

I recently purchased Nascar2...when I run it from Win95..the joystick does not work. When i click on "calibtrate joystick", there is no activity at all...like the joystick is not connected. When I run it from dos...no Thanks!

You are running win 95 B... check in your control panel and under the system icon you can tell what version that you are running if it says 4.00 4.50b you have a problem... it seems to be missing a virtual device driver in win 95 b and wont let you run it from a window. You will need to run it from dos with your sound card drivers loaded.

It is another one of the bugs in the game. I just started running it from dos. Also when you run it from dos you don't get the critical error message when the CD is not in. When you start it from Windows, you have to go back to the control panel and reconfigure your joystick quite often before the game will recognize it. I wish they had fixed these bugs before they released it, but we were in a hurry to get it so they gave it to us like this. -- > I recently purchased Nascar2...when I run it from Win95..the joystick does > not work. Just to clarify, I believe that this bug manifests itself in OEM "B" versions (approx August of 1996) of Win95. MS apparently decided to change the joystick drivers (perhaps the old ones were working too well?) and something about the new ones broke our game. (We didn't have an OEM "B" machines in the office to test against before we shipped. Why? Because we had already bought our testing machines and didn't have any reason to think that MS's new version of Win95 would break us...) Of course, we "wish" these bugs were fixed before release as well, but one cannot fix bugs that one doesn't know about. Avoiding the "critical error" message is as simple as running NASCAR2.EXE (or REM ing out the line in the N2.bat file which references the CD-ROM (for the movie)) I don't think it has anything to do with the DOS/Win95 issue. ---Jim Sokoloff, Papyrus >> I recently purchased Nascar2...when I run it from Win95..the joystick >does >> not work. You've got an attitude problem!!! Let Papyrus take care of it, your best bet is to ....Just leave it alone.

So why don't you tell us what that configuration is, so we can get ours to work?? :) -- Paul #18 Alpha Omega Motorsports Chevolet truck #18 Alpha Omega Motorsports Pontiac GrandPrix Rom 10:13 "Whoever will call upon the name of the Lord will be saved"

I just installed the Microsoft Sidewinder software on my system and the joystick problems are gone! Download the software from Microsoft's web site - file name is "swndr15.exe". I configured my wheel and pedals as a 2-axis 4 button joystick. Then recalibrated in N2. Give it a try - might work for any of you with the joystick problem. Rick

While I agree that OEM "B" seems to hold the problem, I am mystified as to why some have not had the joystick failure with N2 under this version of Win95. Any answers? Also, If MS did change the drivers to "break" N2, maybe it was their response to MS explorer's "broken condition" ;-) ! If this scenario holds true, MS should be releasing a "patch" soon. I had tried this a while back and it did not solve my problem. Still no joystick calibration in N2 under W95 OSR2 (B release). This is the utility that puts the Sidewinder Icon as {*** Devices} in the Control panel, correct? Ron

Supposed to be updated drivers. Rick

For me the Win95 joystick calibration works but if I go into N2 while connected online to Kali, the joystick is inoperable while within N2. If I disconnect from my ISP the joystick reappears. There are no conflicts in Device Manager. I too am running the OEM version of Windows. Has anyone seen this peculiarity? I recently updated to a new Pentium 200 along with updating Windows (I had to) and it bugs me that this doesn't work. Ya, I can probably go through KaliDos but this seems to imply that I won't be able to run in the NRO if I can't get this working. Any hints? --- Frank ---

There's two OEM versions (plain or "A", and "B") The "B" version seems to not work, which is being investigated... For now, I'd just run whatever it took to make it work (KaliDOS in your case), as this is an issue that will surely need to be resolved, since like it or not, we've got to bend over to the latest offerings from Redmond. ---Jim Sokoloff, Papyrus

I had the same prob as the first fellow and I found it to be the speed compensating game card in my machine (two joystick ports on a card). Worked fine in dos boot but Windows95 would not recognize any joystick I plugged into it. But yet it recognized that the game card was there and had no conflicts. I removed the game card, enabled the joystick port on my soundblaster, and bought a 6 dollar joystick Y-adapter cable and problem is solved. If you are not using a game card, I have seen lot's of problems and/or conflicts with anything except a SoundBlaster.TM soundcard. Hope this helps. Kel Calgary, Alberta CANADA

There is also a bug with the OEM "B" version of Windows. Go to Control Panel-System and check the version. If it says 4.00.950 B, your hosed and have to run the sim in real DOS mode. --- Frank ---

On Thu, 13 Mar 1997 13:22:35 -0600, Dave Hoelcher >Has anyone tried the win95a joystick driver with win95b? Yep, Tried that and about everything else I can think of short of trying a dedicated gamecard such as the ACM (which I understand still does not solve the problem of N2/W95(b) problems for some of those that have tried this), but atleast I will know that I should have better calibration values and hopefully a better "feel" with my T2 which is somewhat "twitchy" when turning too quick on my current system P166MMX versus the performance I had on my P100.
