Best height for Steering Wheel

I have just purchased a steering wheel for use with my sim. It is the kind whose console rests down on a surface in front of the driver, using suckers for stability. However, I believe the standard desk height is around 27 inches. With a console on top of such a desk, it means that I need to hold my hands at chest height (or above), when in fact, the most comfortable position would probably be when my hands were about the height of the bottom of my rib cage. For instance, it is very comfortable when I place the console on my lap - but it doesn't stick down too well =:-). My chair is not of variable height, and anyway it's a perfect height for keyboard PC stuff. Anyone experienced such a problem? -- =======================================================================

They have their hands almost at neck height... I tried different heights, and now I am comfortable with chest height. It gives you much more control. But of course, you need to get used to it. l8er ronny

Im sure with millions of dollars in F1 car design , driver's ergonomics are very important due to the long race times in the car. =8>) -David Gary-

Which wheel exactly is it? Most wheels when placed on a desk are of the right height? Can't you use another chair/desk? #:~> **Peter**

Actually I beg to differ with your comments about F1 ergonomics. The driving position for most F1 cars is like lying in the bath with your feet up by the taps. The driver's chin is forced into his chest. This is to keep the centre of gravity down and to allow the raised noses of the cars. Some of the comments from the drivers about the Argentina track: JV was complaining about hitting the bumps and hurting his back and Eddie Irvine chipped a tooth racing there. Driver comfort is not a big factor in car design. So to be realistic, take the steering wheel into the bath. (Careful not to drop the monitor into the bath water.) Turn up the heat to 130F, run a powerful chainsaw, without silencers, by each ear, smear oil over a pair of glasses, place a 20 lb weight to your head to simulate the helmet and have a friend (or enemy for greater realism) pull your head sideways as go through the corners. If you spin off the course, jump into a box of kitty litter! Good luck in your search for greater realism! Cheers Richard

20 lbs? Obviously you have never picked up a high quality race helmet!

Not just the weight of the helmet.

But that is not what he said. A helmet is nothing as far as g-forces are concerned.

Obviously you have never picked up a high quality race > helmet! Just buy a chair that can rotate up and down and mouint your PC on it. So when you trun left you will slant down right, stimulating the G's . And why not put on a real helmet. with a 2-way radio in it. You wife could be your crew-chief :). Also a VR-headset to recreate the sensation of real 3d world. All this for just 2359$. Water bottle included also.
