F1 Racing Simulation performance on different PCs

A poster asked how F1 Racing Simulation ran after hearing it was unplayable on a P133 with 3Dfx. Owners reported smooth running on Pentium and PII systems with Voodoo cards but slowdowns in traffic on Cyrix chips. A critic who called the graphics, sound and physics poor was roundly rebutted, with many praising the AI, and tips were shared on Glide gamma settings and refresh rates.

I read an email from a fellow in France stating that F1RS is extremely hardware instensive. He had a P133 with 3dfx and said it was unplayably slow. Any other users care to comment on how well it runs on thier systems? dave henrie Washington State University. (it's not the end of the Earth, but you can see it from there!)
P133, Monster 3D (3Dfx), 64 MB of RAM. It runs very smooth with most or all detail turned on, except when there are a bunch of cars in front of you. -- Please remove nospam from address when replying via e-mail.

It's all relative to what you're used to.... Clark
Cyrix 6x86MX 233 with Monster 3d overclocked to 61 Mhz: Smooth when alone on the track, jerky at race start, in fact it is impossible to drive in traffic. Don't run F1RS on Cyrix, I hear AMD K6 isn't much better. Borut

Hmm the games speed is not the question it's the playability which is lacking and the graphics are terrible the backgrounds are appalling, in 3dfx mode it simply glazes the hideous pixels with a foggy mess, the sound is terrible too it sounds like two bees in a jar. The menus are appalling, the steering is unsensitive, the AI is totally unrealistic, the worst thing though is the colour palette used in the game all the colours are far too deep, it does not look natural at all considering the palette available, 6500 colours the programmers have been a bit shallow. It seems in this newsgroup that far too many people prop up this program as the bees knees and far better than anything available, but that's just so untrue. I remember the fuss around the release of gp2, I used to check this news group for news of any demos or release dates etc, it was quite exiting and when gp2 came out I think most people were quite rightly impressed. Americans post this group quite regularly checking to see when the program will be released in their country,..its quite sad because every store in my town seems too have a copy of the godforsaken game. I am not afraid to put my hand up and say that I purchased a bum game, I buy many games and have tried to like this one thinking it must be me!!, but all my pals are in agreement and we thrash the shit out of racing sims all the time. Unless UBISOFT release another version of this program then my opinion will continue to drop. Hope that may help in your quest for the truth. Save up your money and wait for gp3 or better still get psygnosis f1 may not be a simulator but looks better and is a lot more fun than f1rs. Regards Paul Knox.

Mike, Which sim are you playing? I think the physics model is pretty good, and the AI is among the best I've seen. The AI cars drive like other people, they don't just run round oblivious to your presence. Steve.

I'm running P-II 266mhz on LX chipset, with 64mb 10ns SDRAM, Matrox Millenium, Diamond Monster 3DFX, Seagate Barracuda SCSI drives, old SoundBlaster 16 card. Game plays perfect for me. I love it. Everyone has compained about AI being terrible, or other things not being so good, but maybe I'm lucky, the game runs great for me. Yes, the AI may need a little work, as I can outrun them after a few laps of practice, but I love the graphics and just about every other part of the game. I've shelved GP2 for now.......maybe GP3 (if it ever comes out, and if it does, it better have native 3DFX support!) will have a chance at topping F1RS. Poor physics model? Is that because you cant keep it on the road? It's more realistic than anything else you can buy. Appalling AI? In that they DONT run straight thru you at every opportunity??

Sorry I didn't know you are God. Ok, so now we have that sorted out, everyone else is wrong, you are right. Oh, sorry, you can't be God after all. That was far too ridiculous thing to say. You may play your Psygnosis F1 till the cows come home if you really find it that great. It appears to me some people have just decided to hate F1RS as much as they can, no matter what happens. One thing common among them is that they shoot out things like "The computer driver AI is most unrealistic I've ever seen", but hardly ever give reasons for their opinions. Oh well, their loss, not mine. As it happens, I found the AI pretty good in F1RS. They are competitive, but still don't ram you off the track or always hit you from behind like Psygnosis F1 or CPR drivers. Someone complained that when you are in the middle of the pack in a chicane or something, they always get hit by the other cars. I've had exactly the opposite experience with F1RS, for example I just drove Melbourne with maximum number of cars and full realism a few times trying the first chicane/turn, I didn't get hit by the other cars at least so much as they would have hurt my car. They seemed to try to get past me, not OVER me, but like in real F1 races, accidents can happen in those situations. Why some people claim that the other F1RS drivers act as if you were not on the track is TOTALLY beyond me. On my copy of F1RS, they definitely try to get past me by not touching me at all. Naturally, if they are coming from behind at full speed and I cut them off just before a turn, it is only realistic if they cannot prevent that crash from happening.

Don't experience the slowdowns when things are >busy. Same here with my 233MMX, 32MB and 3Dfx Voodoo. It runs great with full detail settings and all cars. It does slow down when there are lots of cars in your view, like ten or more, but never so much that it would be even near unplayable. I would estimate that normally with a few cars it runs at 30 fps, and at worst goes down to 20 fps in those very worst situations. One hint: I've always had Replay turned off, I've heard it can really slow the game down. It is. So how did you die? In a car accident? Uh, I guess so, but they have failed to destroy the actual gameplay for me. I DISagree 100%. It has great physics model, very realistic. As far as I can tell, I have never raced with a real F1 car, though. One of the best computer driver AIs I've seen on PC driving games. They are very competitive, but they still seem to know you exist. ;-) And it is so great when you see three cars in front of you really try to compete each other too, trying to find the place to pass the other drivers. It feels so real. The sounds in F1RS were recorded from a real F1 racing car. How do you suggest they should have done those sounds then? With their mouth? Have you driven a F1 car so that you know exactly how it should sound? A hint: usually cars sound different when you are driving them compared to listening them from your seat in the audience. Did you know that in many cases the sound effects they use for guns in movies are not sounds of original guns? It isn't usually such a thumping BLAM! like in movies, but rather some sharper and much less interesting sounds. The reason they use artificial sounds for them is simply because they sound more convincing, and the audience likes them more. Just thinking that maybe if you heard a "more impressive" car sound in game X, it is some "digitally retouched" sound to make it sound beefier. And when you hear the real car sound in another game, you instantly think it sounds less realistic because it is less "manly".

Hey this happens on my copy also! What a coincidence! :) I find the AI great. It is most noticable when driving in the 3rd person view (3rd car view?). I can see all the other cars react to my driving. They avoid crashing into me when I cut them off or when I lose control and spit out. The computer cars drive very competetively. >On Sun, 4 Jan 1998 08:48:30 -0000, "Mike Fisher" Oh dear, I did it again didn't I ? I made the mistake of posting an opinion the day before I left the country for a couple of days, came back, and found I'd been mis-understood again..... Point taken. No, but I have done a little racing (karts), spent a lot of time driving GP2, N2, ICR 1 & 2, and I believe, in my HUMBLE opinion, that the model in GP2 is more realistic. Thus, I believe f1-rs had something to aim for... and missed big time. And before I get flamed for this, I am NOT suggesting that karts are analagous to F1 cars..... OK, we'll have to agree to differ on that one. It's no better than the AI in GP2, but better than the same in N2, and ICR2. Oh come on ! I'll take the same tone with you... Have you ever watched an F1 race on tv ? Ever heard the in-car***pit sounds ? Now, go and get the sound extractor for GP2, re-play the WAV for the engine sounds. Listen carefully now.... Play a couple of laps of F1-RS and then tell me you *really* believe the sounds are realistic. And as for that notchy grating sound when you change down a gear in f1rs.... <speechless> IM_H_O, the sound in f1-rs actually sounds like it's outside the car. It has too much echo. So yes, you're actually right when you suggest that the car should sound different when driving. Different from F1-rs that is.... Nah really ?!?! Geddaway...... You misiterpret my criticisms completely. See above. Manly ? Sheeesh - Get a life. Since when does a sound having more bass tones make it more "Manly" ? Is that what you're suggesting ?

Yepp, that's one of my biggest gripes with the sim. The sound is too close to being on and off. OTOH, there was a race engineer from Renault involved, so maybe F1 cars are jumpy like that??? l8er ronny -- |\ _,,,---,,_ I want to die like my Grandfather, ZZZzz /,`.-'`' -. ;-;;,_ in his sleep. |,4- ) )-,_. ,\ ( `'-' Not like the people in his car, '---''(_/--' `-'\_) screaming their heads off!

On Tue, 6 Jan 1998 00:03:02 -0000, "Paul Knox" >Come on Nathan the graphics are bad >and the sound is bad >and it handles bad. > What's left to stimulate the simulator?. Paul, I found that when I turned the refresh rate on my Monster 3D up, the graphics in F1RS became awful; too dark, with way too much contrast. When I went back to the lowest refresh rate, they got beautiful again. Unfortunately, it seems to take a reboot for each new setting to "take". I agree the sound isn't wonderful, but the wave files were generated from recordings of real cars and when you can avoid the stepping phenomenon which occurs with rapid changes in RPM, they are pretty realistic. You're right about the menus, and the user interface has other problems as well. I think a different group must have done this part; its implementation is just not the same level of quality as the game play implementation. Also, you have to do a full install and turn off CD sound to get reasonable speed for menus and track loading. The stock car setup is terrible. Download some setups from one of the F1RS fan sites. With a good setup, the handling is excellent. The AI isn't perfect, but I think in general it's as good as any "stock" AI (now, some of the "aftermarket" AI you can get off the Web for ICR2 is unreal!) I do wish there were a wider range of adjustability; on some tracks, it's not too hard to beat the Expert mode AI, while on others they are mighty tough! I've got many hours on all of the major sims, including ICR2, GP2, N2, SODA, and CPR. IMHO, F1RS is the best. To me, the most important aspects of a sim are vehicle dynamics and graphics. It's got far and away the best graphics of all the above sims; the visuals and special effects are stunning, really. Even makes ICR2/Rendition look a bit dated. F1RS's vehicle dynamics come very close to being as good as ICR2. Together, these features make it an awesome sim. The gamma settings don't take effect at the higher refresh rates unless you set another of the Glide environment settings, SST_VIDEO_24BPP. The best method is to set up a batch file for the Glide settings and call the sim at the end of it. For F1RS, I use the following batch file: type f:\readme.txt > nul set FX_GLIDE_NO_SPLASH=1 set SST_FASTPCIRD=1 REM set FX_GLIDE_SWAP_INTERVAL=0 REM set SST_SWAP_EN_WAIT_ON_VSYNC=0 set SST_FASTMEM=1 set SST_GAMMA=1.7 set SST_GRXCLK=55 set SST_VIDEO_24BPP=1 set SST_SCREENREFRESH=85 C:\WINDOWS\UbiSoft\UBISETUP.exe -play F1RS Some notes: - the first line is simply to get my machine to read the CD - otherwise it makes horrible vibration noises (yes, I need a new CD-ROM <g>) - SST_FASTPCIRD, SST_FASTMEM and SST_GRXCLK all boost the performance of the 3dfx. Use these at your own risk. - the two REMed out lines can result in significant fps increases for some sims and hardware combinations. Alternatively they may make no fps difference and simply degrade the picture. I didn't notice any improvements with F1RS on my machine so I don't use them. Using a batch file like this is that you can easily change the settings (just edit the .bat & then re-run) and can have different settings for each Glide program. Cheers, Richard

So I guess I am happy I have a P5200MMX then. I have the same stuff as you except for the Intel. I have what I would estimate as 25-30 fps. Some slowing as the speech is played but no slideshow at all. I blame the Cyrix. HAHA... Good joke. My GP2 is in the shitcan where it belongs. -- Header address intentionally scrambled to ward off the spamming hordes.

Sorry, but this is a case of Cyrix + 3D games = "no fun at all". Having a 3D card on a Cyrix is as bad as using GP2 with a keyboard :)
Make that Cyrix + *some* 3d games. There are a number that performed quite well on my old P166+/Monster3D combo, with GLQuake and F1RS being the "exceptions" in my collection. And GLQuake was actually satisfactory for single-player use (27fps). F1RS had slowdown in the first corner of a race, which makes actually competing in the race difficult, but otherwise the game was pretty smooth and fast. For most 3d action titles, Cyrix+3d card is a good, economical combination. For anything based on the Quake engine, and sims with heavy AI calculations, however, the advantage of hardware acceleration is nullified. The general rule (Quake engine excepted) is that if a game performs well on a iP133, it will perform similarly on a 6x86 P166 (133MHz clock speed) and most likely better on a 6x86 P200 (150MHz clock speed). For a game requiring an iP166/3d card combo or above, however, the old 6x86s don't have the horsepower. As far as the 6x86MXs go, however, I haven't a clue. Steve, If you're having that much trouble with just a few cars ahead of you throughout a race, it sounds like you may need to tweak your system a bit. On my recently retired p166+, I only had framerate problems going into the first turn of a race. Otherwise, once the field spread out, the game was fairly to extremely smooth, with slight degradation going into a turn with 4-5 cars ahead. I don't know if the 200 is fast enough to eliminate the first turn slowdown (you're only getting ~150MHz performance with the FPU, maybe a little less), but you might try adjusting some system settings. There are some other threads in the newsgroup with tweaking suggestions, see if any of those can help you. Otherwise, if you want to play F1RS as it was intended, you may need a faster processor (raw MHz).
