Is anyone using FAT32?

Running racing sims on a FAT32 drive

A user planning to reinstall Windows 95B asked whether DOS racing games work on FAT32. Most reported ICR2, NASCAR Racing 2 and GP2 ran fine, since FAT32 works with the DOS 7 underlying Windows 95. Posters clarified that Windows NT 4.0 cannot read FAT32 partitions, which matters for dual-boot setups.

I am going to wipe my hard drive soon and reinstall Win95B, and am seriously thinking about trying FAT32 instead of FAT16 (there's alot of wasted space on my hard drive). My main concern is that as I understand it, older operating systems like DOS (and suprisingly even Windows NT 4.0 I think) can't see FAT32. Are DOS applications affected by this as well? It's kinda pointless if I can't run N2 on it, ya know? Also, is it true that you can only enable FAT32 by creating a partition? I have a 3.8GB drive and since FAT32 supports drives up to around 2 Terrabytes I was just going to do away with my partition and have one big FAT32 drive. If Windows NT 4.0 doesn't run on FAT32 (I run both operating systems) then I would have to partition anyway and use NTFS for NT. But like I said, if Nascar 2 won't run on FAT32 then the whole idea is out the window. Please let me know if you are using it and how you like it. Thanks! ER Relativity
> I am going to wipe my hard drive soon and reinstall Win95B, and am > seriously thinking about trying FAT32 instead of FAT16 This was the topic of a thread a couple of months ago. It scared me into re-installing WIN95 with FAT-16. People reported performance problems. I hope someone who knows what they are talking about will comment. All I know about WIN95 is what people tell me. Win95 is on my systems only for games, I work in Solaris. So I'll give up disk usage for performance. Of course, all contributions to this thread may praise FAT32's performance, and I'll look like an idiot. Larry
How bout ICR2? Anyone have success with this under FAT32? Chris

I've had no prob with ICR2 or Nascar2 using FAT 32. Ken The Game Pad http://gamepad.org/

The only real advantages of FAT32 are its ability to bypass the 2GB partition limit and its use of smaller clusters on large partitions (performance may go down slightly due to the increasing number of clusters). I use it for convenience, nothing more... -- Eric T. Busch http://ebusch.akorn.net >This was the topic of a thread a couple of months ago. I have had no problems whatsoever to run ICR2, N2 or GP2 using FAT32. With FAT32 you waste less space due to the smaller clusters. I my case I gained around 10% diskspace when I converted my 2.5GB disk to FAT32. Performance wise I don't know since I installed a new motherboard at the same time. Koran

Any game that will run under Win95's DOS 7.0 (which should be every one of them) will have no problems running with FAT32. The only problem you may have would be when the FAT32 drive has more than 2GB of free space, as it can cause some programs to think there is not enough disk space to install the game. -- Eric T. Busch http://ebusch.akorn.net >How about GP2?

Runs great!

Eric, Whats up with this thread? DOS7 runs fine on fat32, Window95OSR2 runs fine on fat32, NT4.0 runs fine on fat32 (although it prefers NTFS.) I dual boot OSR2/NT4.0 and run anything I please. Where did this goofy thought come from anyway? All the best, Mike Davis -- Michael S. DOS games shouldn't have a problem with FAT32. The only problems that you might encounter is when using disk utilities that were created prior to FAT32. For example if you used Win95A's Scandisk program on a FAT32 drive. Win95 OSR2 has a new set of utilities that are FAT32 compatible. regards Andrew

Well, that's not exactly true. NT4 cannot see, read or write FAT32 partitions, just as Win95/DOS is unable to see NTFS partitions. You sure you don't have NT4 installed on different partition ... if you indeed have converted FAT16 to FAT32 ... Regards, Hena

WinNT 4.0 does not run on FAT32. You will have to format a FAT16 or NTFS on a partition to use NT. I tried to put system files for NT on my computer with a 2MB FAT16 partition on c: and install the operating system on a my FAT16 D: and it did not work. Dos will not work on my computer either but all my dos games work fine in dos mode. Wait for NT 5.0 thats what I am doing.

I have run N2 with 95a and b, I wouldn't bet on this being your problem. Do u run a intell or a clone chip ?

>oh, and by the way i here 95b wont dual boot (no nt) Since NT can't read FAT32 partitions, 95b is the only option for using FAT32. I also run 95b with FAT32, and have no problems with n2 either. As long as you have the patches from Papy, this shouldn't be your problem.
I installed N2 on 95B without the patches and it ran fine with the FAT32. I did notice that if I were in the dos mode that it took longer to load if I didn't have smartdrive loaded. > >oh, and by the way i here 95b wont dual boot (no nt) > Since NT can't read FAT32 partitions, 95b is the only option for using FAT32. > I also run 95b with FAT32, and have no problems with n2 either.
