Mclaren GR mod for F1C download location?

Finding the McLaren mod for F1C and a BitTorrent dispute

Mitch_A struggled to download the ORSPG McLaren mod for F1 Challenge and wished it were on BitTorrent. Eldred, a university network admin, explained that BitTorrent's forced sharing caused DMCA complaints on his campus, which led to a heated argument with Mitch_A, Damien Evans and PigDog. Mitch eventually got the mod via a binaries newsgroup.

Anyone have a decent link to download ORSPG McLaren Mod for F1C. On their site it has a link but it takes you somewhere else that doesnt have a download link. Hasnt anyone ever heard of Bitorrent? Mitch

IT does make sense for dialuppers when these huge mods are released. But beyond the BT debate, it shows how were are at the mercy of the vagaries of the internet. Almost every week I've run into lost links due to Race Sim Central's hacking a couple of months ago. I'm still trying get get a fully debugged copy of the 67 version of Sebring and we end up with roadblock after roadblock. A central depository for mods is a good thing, but the chance for loosing files, and mods etc are magnified when you group them all together. For the 3rd time today I'm gonna make the same suggestion.(the first two were elsewhere on forums, not RAS). We should be using alt.binaries.simulators.autos. Perhaps somebody could write an automated robot uploaded that would resend all the mods and carsets and tracks and utilities at predetermined times. This would keep everything current, give it a safe place, take the load off of websites AND discourage software thieves from using OUR newsgroup. I'll try and put up all my Mclaren Stuff there Mitch. dave henrie

4 parts of mc challenge are up one absa dh
Thanks dave but whats the trick in a binaries group? I see a bunch listed for each part but out of all of em I could only find part one and part two that give me an option to download the actual attachment. Part 3-4 are all gobblity gook ;) Mitch "Dave Henrie" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

You need to get over this "lowest common denominator" reasoning Eldred ;) Yea people are stupid all over but do we all need to suffer because of a few? Bitorrent is GREAT at what it does. Just cause a bunch of crooked college boys and girls use it for illegal purposes isnt a valid reason to dis it :)) Mitch "EldredP" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

you might try a different newsgroup reader. I use Xnews and was able to dload the 4th part...the smallest...with no troubles. There are other newsgroup dloaders that work well also, but the names escape me. Hopefully somebody else can chime in. dh
Why would it be the newsreader? I was able to get 1 and 2 ok. I dont think it's finished uploading to the server quite yet as Ive seen a few new ones pop up this last time I checked. Ill wait over night and get back at ya. Thanks Mitch "Dave Henrie" <[email hidden]> wrote in message > you might try a different newsgroup reader. Bit Torrent is exactly the same as downloading from a server. The only difference is that the people downloading contribute their spare uploading capacity to the overall bandwidth. As you say, anyone who dis's BT simply doesn't understand it.

Its the "lowest common denominator" that ruin it for the good reasons to have something like bittorrent around. If you we could somehow get rid of all the illegal activity on those types of technologies, there would be plenty of people that would jump on it.

Ya See Damien, Eldred is a University Admin type guy. He's responsible for all the systems online at some teeny tiny podunk college in Michigan. It may even have been the one that NARROWLY avoided defeat at the hands of the WSU Cougars in the Rose Bowl a few years back. But I digress... Your issues SHOULD be with theDMCA and it's publishers. Bitorrent does it's job EXACTLY as it was designed and it does it EXTREMELY well. Youre just mad cause youre caught in the middle of this moronic war ;) IMO youre attacking an innocent bystander that does nothing wrong by itself. Im still trying to get Mclaren mod for F1C. It's been days now when it couldve taken minutes using Bitorrent. But using your logic, kill the messenger ;) Mitch "EldredP" <[email hidden]> wrote in message

Point taken but that's hardly BT's fault. If you're downloading something illegal that's your (or your friendly admin's) problem. ;-)

I see Mr. Simmons lessons are paying off ;) (Im just joking so dont get them panties wadded up, hehe). Seriously though Eldred you chimed in and some of us disagreed. No sense getting upset about it. To each his own. I like BT and you don't, in the big scheme does it really matter in the least? I personally don't think so. Just wait till GTR hits the "shelves" and none of us can get it for X number of days as the few free servers that are available get hammered. Bitorrent can legally and easily handle the heavy load and we can all benefit with quicker downloads. How does this relate to illegal downloading on some college campus? This is the same logic that gun control lobbyists use to take away our guns. What comes next? Mitch "EldredP" <[email hidden]> wrote in message . You don't like that, I really don't > GIVE a fuck. Well, Eldred, based on that IMHO BitTorrent actuallly is a better program, becuase it allows the risk of all the pirate FU*** getting caught, which you should appreciate apparently being in the position you are in. Lets face it, if they all get caught AND punished, then all your DMCA complaints go away. As a Sys Admin like I am, sure my workload is higher now, but when they all get caught and get kicked around a little, my job will be easier. You know as well as anyone, until they get caught, they arent ever going to stop downloading illegal crap.

Boy, this has been an education. The funny(?) thing about the whole situation is that I don't have a problem with people downloading stuff. I don't even have a problem with people sharing stuff. Anybody who really knows me here *should* know that, but that's another discussion. However, on our network, we can't allow people to share copyrighted files(that may make the university liable), and I have to take any steps possible to prevent it. It's my job as network administrator to ensure the integrity of the network. I've even told students that we don't care that you download, as long as you're not using a disproportionate amount of bandwidth. We don't penalize for downloading. Sharing is a different matter. I don't believe I ever told anyone here not to use BitTorrent, or condemmed their use for it. I only stated that *I* hate the program, and explained why. I got jumped on simply for stating my opinion. That's a little disappointing(especially from some of the people involved), but it's an example of the mob behavior we've seen in this group in the past. Based on some of the replies, it was clear to me that most people weren't understanding my point of view, and nothing was being accomplished on either side. Up to that point, it was civil, but no one's mind was being changed. So I stopped my side of the discussion, basically agreeing to disagree. Some random yahoo takes that as a cue to attack. I respond to that attack, but somehow that makes *me* the bad guy? I don't see that as being fair either, but live and learn, I guess. My irritation wasn't at all directed towards you Eldred. I'd been trying unsuccessfully to d/l the McLaren mod and everywhere I turned was an invalid link or a link that was extremely slow. Bitorrent could easily have solved my dilemma efficiently and effectively was all I was pointing out. BitTorrent is a great and useful program and I'm very sorry that its existance inconveniences you. The fact that it does inconvenience you however is quite irrelevant, as is the subject of copyrighted material since such material can also be downloaded via just about any other method of internet use. I'm not really sure what your point is? You don't like it because of some legal technicality where its OK to download illegal material as long as you can't be shown to be distributing it? The whole logic of that seems a bit ridiculous, what would you like done exactly?

>BitTorrent is a great and useful program and I'm very sorry that its >existance inconveniences you. The fact that it does inconvenience you >however is quite irrelevant, To you, maybe. Not to me, otherwise I wouldn't have brought it up. >as is the subject of copyrighted material since >such material can also be downloaded via just about any other method of >internet use. I'm not really sure what your point is? That's obvious. >You don't like it >because of some legal technicality where its OK to download illegal material >as long as you can't be shown to be distributing it? The whole logic of >that seems a bit ridiculous, what would you like done exactly? It only seems ridiculous to you because you're not in my situation. That's cool - I can understand that. If people simply download using Kazaa, Gnutella, etc. and have sharing off, the music companies currently don't have the capability to detect what they're downloading. So we couldn't enforce a copyright policy for that. Since it's an educational institution, there are also limits on how much we can lock down the network. I don't like BitTorrent because you can't disable sharing. So if someone on our network uses it for downloading copyrighted files, they are sharing at the same time, and the copyright holders can and do discover it. Since I'm the one who has to field every DMCA complaint for a residence hall user, this program *directly* impacts my workload just by being used on the network. I still don't expect you to agree with me, but hopefully you at least understand my situation a little better...
