Greg Cisko's Burnout impressions

Greg Cisko reviewed Burnout, listing missing keyboard commands in the manual and trouble doing burnouts with a ThrustMaster T2. Playtesters explained trans brake and line lock use, and he returned the game. Trevor Thomas was criticised for promoting NHRA Drag Racing without trying Burnout.

Yep I went and bought it from a local EB so it can be returned :-) I've spent my time building a 1450HP Funnycar. My best time has been 7.011 at 188MHP. Here are some quick impressions. Feel free to jump in with corrections or help :-) 1) The manual does not list all the keyboard commands. The only way find what commands are possible is in the OPTIONS menu. Some commands for graphic detail are listed though. Whom ever put the manual together needs a new line of work IMHO. 2) The only way to exit the game is via the OPTIONS menu? At this point I am thinking Bethesda really does not want me to keep this game. 3) I have been racing HEADSUP because I hate bracket racing. I am unable to configure the game to allow me to race an event against a full FunnyCar field. WTF? I don't really care to race an ancient pony... I want to do an event against all FC's. 4) Seems virtually impossible to burnout. Line-LOCK appears to do nothing. While the OTHER cars just sit in the box and burnout all day. 5) Why can I almost flip my FC when I move the center of gravity? What is the point of the wheelie bars? 6) Why is there no sound in the replays? 7) What is the best way to setup a TM T2 for this game. It is impossible to use the gas/brake at the same time since they are on the same joystick axis. This is one thing I am really not liking very much. It totally hacked together to try to make this work. 8) Is it really impossible to put an Auto trans into reverse? Do you really have to push a REVERSE button like you apparently need to in the game? Thanks for any help anyone can give. But, I'm afraid that point 3 will cause me to return the game. -- Header address intentionally scrambled to ward off the spamming hordes.

just hit the Esc. key Like has been stated before this is sportsman drag racing Pull into the burnout bay hold you trans brake and hit line lock and hold your gas about 8000 rpms the car will roll forward slowly while spinning the tires. Wheelie bars didn't Big Daddy garlits a few years ago from flipping. If your have a T2 you have to setup just like you do in any other racing game (N2,ICR2 ect.) Yes thats the problem with just about any racing game and wheel you have to use a button for reverse, again nascar2, gP2 , and so on. >Thanks for any help anyone can give. But, I'm afraid that point 3 will >cause me to return the game. >-- >Header address intentionally scrambled to ward off the spamming hordes.

>just hit the Esc. key OK I'll give it a try. ?!?!?! It is. My point is that it isn't good enough. The best I can do is assign the Trans-brake to my shift lever and let it go when I want to release. Do the real cars have to pull back on a lever for the trans brake? GP2 and I believe F1RS could downshift to reverse. N2 is porked in the respect. -- Header address intentionally scrambled to ward off the spamming hordes.

Assign your trans brake to one of your red buttons and reverse to the other I wouldn't know about F1RS but I had GP2 for about a week before I gave it away!!!!! and you had to use a button for reverse in that game aswell atleast for a T2,wouldn't know about any other wheel since I can't afford a TSW or ECCI. >-- >Header address intentionally scrambled to ward off the spamming hordes.

Actually I took the game back to EB. There was much about it I thought was OK, but much more that I really disliked. 1) Many of the keyboard commands are not in the manual. This alone led me to believe the game was rushed out the door with the obligatory *C*R*A*P* manual. 2) No sound in the replays. 3) The overlay of the hood view really looked like a cartoon overlaid on the screen. Kind of like a cardboard cut out. 4) The front bumper view was awesome though. More or less made the lack of a***pit a non issue. 5) I guess I really dislike sportsman bracket drag racing :-) 6) The computer cars would just sit in the burnout box and do burnouts. No way can the USER controlled car do this. 7) I *NEVER* saw an AI car blow a start, blow up or otherwise crash. If I didn't provide the e***ment in this regard, it didn't happen. The computer cars seemed perfect which is bad. I did download the Funny Car setup form the www site mentioned in an earlier post. My best time was 6.197secs at 228mph. I know I would like a drag racing game this one just wasn't it... Sorry guys. I did try it, gotta give me credit for that :-) -- Header address intentionally scrambled to ward off the spamming hordes.

You can hit esc from the main menu. I know this definately works. Depends on the tires that you choose. I have my T2 setup the following way. The shifter is setup like you normally would. I have reverse setup as the top button and trans-brake setup as the bottom button next to the wheel. When you use the trans-brake, you do not need to brake job it. It essentially works like neutral.

>> 4) Seems virtually impossible to burnout. Line-LOCK appears >> to do nothing. While the OTHER cars just sit in the box and >> burnout all day. >Depends on the tires that you choose. I think I was using the "normal" tires for a FC, the Pizza cutters for the fronts and the racing slicks for the rears. I didn't use the dragster slicks as I thought they were for the Rail cars. Yes once you engage the trans brake you can release the brake. It does act like it is in neutral. However your reaction time is now determined by how quickly you release the trans brake. Very awk- ward when your trans brake is on a T2 button. Since I was using an auto trans I thought it was much easier to assign the trans brake to the shift lever on my T2 (when i pulled back it was ON). I was getting reaction times of between .100 and .028 which was my best. So this worked well. Eventually I got the controls for the game down like I wanted. But I still couldn't really do a burnout, and tere were other things about the game I didn't like. 1) The computer AI never crashed, blew up, or redlighted. 2) Apparently you can build unrealisticly fast cars (5.27 in a 55 Chevy... Right.) 3) The game really seemed rushed out the door. I do know if a good drag racing game comes down the line I'll like it. Burnout tought me that much :-) -- Header address intentionally scrambled to ward off the spamming hordes.

I think the point may be that "Burnout" is not a smash hit? Personally I'm going to wait until some stuff is added and fixed and after "NHRA Drag racing" is released. I'm pretty sure that it'll be a better sim from what I read here about Burnout and what I know about "NDR" I would like to see Burnout get fixed so we would have both a pro category and a sportsman sim, after "X Car" though I have my doubts about Bethesda being able to do a real sim. Trev
says... [snip] Just a question about the line lock, I don't own the game so I don't know if the manual explains how to use it (or if you already know.) To use a line lock, you apply and hold the brakes, hit the line lock switch, then release the brakes. This keeps the front binders engaged but not the rears. Then after you get the tires spinning you release the line lock to start moving. Is that what you did?

First of all, Trev, it was directed to Greg.. Second of all, you are just being "closed" minded. Explain this, on kali, everyone likes it?? You are just seeing t he "one side of the issue" here. That's not being very "open minded", though everyone is entitled to an opinion f or which you have done, YET, have not played the software. Now what's up with that??? As for NHRA.. it only shows talks about "two classes" of racing.. And yes, it's got alot of "eyecandy".. So let me jump ahead.. Just because it's got a***pit, does it still mean it's a sim??... HELL NO!!.. i.e. TOCA.. Cause of "one" software they brought out??? Jeez.. talk about harsh. If you want to be that way.. Hmm.. I recall about all the bad things of TSW when they first came out and during the past year. Yet, I have nothing wrong with you r company at all. Cause, all I hear is "hearsay".. So does that mean that the TSW is really a "good" wheel??? Now think about it.. I feel as though, you shouldn't base an opinion off of one' s opinions, yet, you don't have the material or experience to even base "your" co nclusions about a game or product.. Comprende??? I am just voicing my "opinion" on the subject.. take care jd ------------------------------------------------------------------ Hungry for NEWSGROUPS??? You know Trev, I understand about opinions and you are definitely entitled to yours. HOWEVER the fact that you, (1) Have some kind vested interest in NDR (not sure what your interest is though) (2) Haven't tried Burnout yet (will you?) (3) Continually talk about whats wrong in Burnout and better in NDR Makes it real hard to take your criticisms seriously. I personally, am "Digging the Hell" out of Burnout, I've been playing on Kali and having a Ball. If you go to the S.H.R.A. web site you'll find close to 150 people already signed up for league racing with more signing up every day. You and the people putting out NDR had better hope it's as good as Burnout or better or you'll all be in for a rude suprise (you know how USENET is). I personally have every intention of buying NDR when it comes out, and if it's everything it's "HYPED" to be I'll keep it and sing its praises here just like I do Burnouts. But we've all seen "A LOT OF HYPE" about games before and at the present thats all NDR is, is HYPE. So do yourself a favor go to EB buy Burnout, have some fun and then if you think it's a hunk of ***like "X-Car" take it back. You don't have to tell us if you like it, we understand it's just business and all. I just think you're doing a dis-service to NDR by bashing the competitors product before yours is on the market. See ya, Bob "Sledge the Hammah" P.S. If you become a closet Burnout freak and play online beware of 5 second 55 Chevys :^)

Julian, it really doesnt matter to me one way or another who likes which sim, what I was going by is the "no in car" thing and the X Car deal plus comments I've read about unrealistic AI, inability to do proper burnouts, crashes, unrealistic speeds for passenger type cars, cartoonlike graphics and on and on. This sounds like BS hasnt yet learned to do a sim and that they are still in "arcade" mode? Not neccesarily, what makes me think it is a real sim is the list of features, the fact that the guys who are doing it are all present or past racers. Don Prudhomme has had input into the sim as well as his current drivers Ron Capps, Larry Dixon and several other TF and FC drivers. Its got a better start toward being a real sim AFAIC, I have been keeping up with Burnout since it was first announced, I've read the previews etc, seen the screenshots, read all the comments and this is what my opinion is based on, I will admit that X Car has been and still is affecting my thinking toward BS's inability to do it right. Well if you***up royally like that, what do expect people to think? Not sure what you mean here, I dont know of any problems with the TSW, sounds a little like a personal attack there Julian? We still have yet to have a unti returned because someone didnt like it. Yet, I have nothing wrong with you Oh yeah? Well I dont know if it does or not but we just had the biggest sales month in our 5 year history, we built a factory with the profits from last year and still cant keep up with demand so I suppose we must have a fairly good product :)! Greg you don't hold the brake and gas down at the sametime to do a burnout, you hit the brakes hit line loclk, hit trans brake take rpms to just under what your Torque converter is set to stall at and let off the trans brake.but when you get to over 1000 hp yes it's kind of hard to do a burnout this way.I will post another message on how to do a burnout will high hp and torque cars. One the line lock is on the rear tires Two, if you set the clutch to slip at the line, the car is still going to roll c ar cause of the vibrations of the engine. So back to number one!! Nitro TF and FC.. Roll through the water and smack the gas. The driver is floori ng the pedal, the crew chief adjusts the throttle for either "quarter or half thr ottle" for the burnout. Then the crew chief adjusts the throttle back to where it should be, adjust the Fuel psi or engage anothe pump to turn on. Then he might turn on the "second" Mag neto.. FYI.. Nitro car leave at "idle".. *** TF and FC leave approximately 6000RPM. take care jd ------------------------------------------------------------------ Hungry for NEWSGROUPS??? Mmmm, and CART Precision Racing was some people's "sim of the year". It takes a lot more than a magazine accolade to impress people around here unfortunately. (Admittedly Arena was quite nice, but Underworld I and II had already done it earlier and better). Cheers! John
