RASF1 Malaysia race report and damage debate

Stuart Becktell reported a frustrating RASF1 race at Malaysia in F1 Challenge after being punted at the start. Drivers debated enabling damage, how lapped cars should behave, and how F1C's network prediction causes phantom contact. Ped Xing apologised for one incident and posted the replay, and an interim race at the A1-Ring was proposed.

Not having run in almost a week, and also not having stability control meant my race didn't go so well. Into turn 11 and 14 I wasn't able to keep near the pace that I was before with stability enabled. Got into third on the start, got punted off, then got hit by lag into turn 4 a few laps later and went off...then going into turn 1 I got dive bombed and was knocked back a place. Then my car just started to act wierd. Spun going down the front straight (while going straight no less), and then went off a few more times for no apparent reason. When I went into the pits, F1C decided to crash, so I was done. A couple of notes: Maybe we should re-enable damage? I had a few people crash into me for no apparent reason. On a more personal note I'd like to have stabilty control enabled, but I know that'll probably even up the field a bit too much. On people that are moving over. Don't. I'm not lapping you, you don't need to stop on the track. Keep your line and maybe let off the throttle a bit. I had a ferrari (eldred?) go way out of his way to try and get out of my way and this actually caused more problems then if he had just stayed on line. You're here to race too, so even if you're slower, you don't need to destroy your race to make mine slightly easier. What percentage races are we running? That would help me out a tad on fuel milage so I'm not constantly asking you guys whats up. What race are we going to run in two weeks? Also, if/when we decide, could you post a link to the track so those without it aren't kept out of the loop.

But next week the race is at Bahrain, don't have that. I guess my thing on damage is that it was obvious to the people who took me out that they didn't respect where my car was on the track, and didn't care that in real life they would have been taken out. And I still think that drivers being lapped should just keep their own line when going down a straight. I'm happy you were willing to move out of the way so much, but you don't need to do it. I haven't seen the tape. But I find these are serious racers and I'd tend to blame lag or some technical problem. Mine was a strong voice for no damage. Stuart I have to apologize because I did hit you going into turn 1. I thought I got close to you without hitting but then I looked at the replay and I did just tap you. It was not intentional or malicious. You make it sound like I just rammed you off without a care. I tapped you right near the end of my braking zone. Is that an excuse? No, and I AM sorry about it, but it's not like I don't respect the other cars out there. For what it's worth, I got tapped out myself in the final turn by Damon a few laps later, putting me behind you again. I saw you spin on the front straight and I was wondering what happened there. Viewing the replay it looks like you clipped the grass on the right. That's probably what caused you to get squirrely and lose the car. -- Ped Xing

I agree it might force us all to be a bit more careful when running in traffic, but Eldred has a strong point that we would end up with very few cars running at the end, in all likelihood. And we need all the cars on the grid we can at this point. Also it's an unfortunate fact that lag sometimes causes problems; it would be a shame for someone to be put out because of it. Regarding stability control, I'm personally not in favor of allowing it. It gives too much of an advantage, so it would force me to enable it to be competitive, and I don't want to get accustomed to using it as a crutch. What do the rest think? -- Ped Xing

Thank you for the apology. I am more concerned with what happened going into turn 1 on the first lap though. The person had no chance of making the corner and rammed me completely into the sand trap. The situation where you hit me was you being a bit optimistic, I'm obviously not happy about it, but it was more of a racing incident then the first time.

My car kept on doing that for some reason, I just don't understand it. It seems like the TC wasn't kicking in or something because I've never had a problem like that until today in the online race. I know that I went into the grass, but I honestly have no clue how I showed up there because I kept the same throttle and turn out response as before. > -- > Ped Xing
I guess my thing on damage is that today I wasn't the one getting into an accident and I had the problems. Those who caused the damage had no ill effect from that particular incident. I think we all need to calm down on the start too, two races in a row we've had cars flying all around on the start. I obviously don't have a tape of the incident, but I'd like to see what happened to cause it. Maybe it was someone just lagged at the worst time possible, but from my view I had someone fly into the back of me. (remove spam.com and replace it with rochester.rr.com to e-mail me the replay.) Just to clarify, I wasn't trying to pass you. I know it probably looked to you like I was trying to get under you, but I brake at a slight angle into that corner up to the apex. In the end, that doesn't matter because I still hit you and I can understand your frustration, it happened to me as well. I do find the car handles different at various points in the race, partly due to fuel load, and partly due to tire temps. I noticed a few times that my tires were getting pretty hot so I had to be careful. -- Ped Xing

I liked Pen's idea of having a race at Austria. It'll be a month without racing otherwise and that would be a tad annoying. I think everyone should be able to have fun at A-1 anyways (my roommate used to call it the short bus track of F1 since its so basically easy.) Agreed! Being unpredictable is more of a problem than being in somebody's way. If the passer is so much faster than the passee then he really ought to have the skill to figure out how to get around. Moving off line is just asking for an accident. One thing we did a few times last year is to make a rule that there was to be no passing before turn 1. One shouldn't have to do that, but sometimes it really helps. One of the weaknesses of F1C's networking is that when there is packet loss it attempts to predict the car position based on a smoothing algorithm. This means neither your car nor the cars around you are necessarily where you think they are. I have seen people appear to run over the grass when, based on their speed they clearly had to be on the pavement, I have run over curbs without knowing I was close, and accidents seem to look different to everyone involved. The only way I know to deal with this is for everyone to give each other lots of room. That of course makes actual racing a lot harder, because for example sometimes you need to be able to get up tight in the braking zone to make a pass. But getting that close is almost guaranteed to cause a problem. Everyone just needs to respect each other's space. Leave a buffer zone on all sides just in case the cars near you aren't really where you think they are. And unfortunately it also means you have to be careful about getting close to curbs and walls, since even your own car isn't necessarily where you think it is. I think that would be a good rule. Watching the replay it seemed like one certain driver had no idea how to pass going into the first turn or the last turn...this might help them. "Haqsau" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

You faster guys don't have the experience of being lapped often. Most of the time, holding your line results in getting punted, followed occasionally by "Get the fuck outta the way!" So, us slowpokes are in a no-win situation. :-( Eldred -- http://www.umich.edu/~epickett Screamers League IICC League GPLRank -6.0 MoGPL rank +267.80 Ch.Rank +52.58 MoC +741.71 Hist. +82.34 MoH:na N2k3 rank:in progress Slayer Spektera lvl 72 assassin Slayer Spectral_K lvl 38 Necro US East
Then those people don't know how to drive. I've been the slow car and the fast car at track days (funnily, it was in the same car) and it was always said. "If you're getting passed, stay on your line, let the faster car decide what to do." That's the way it is everywhere. Trust me, I've been the slower car (one of the reasons why I don't race GPL very often) Its much easier for me if someone is staying on their normal line, I can tell whether I'll be able to make the pass now or later. If they're weaving back and forth (like what happened going into the turn) then I have no clue what to do. I also tend to draft cars when I'm overtaking them. I know I had a problem going down the front straight because I was drafting them, but then they moved out of the way...but I still wanted to draft them :-P I'll be changing back to the Jaguar for next race, so if you I happen to pass you or something, just stay on your normal line and let me figure out what to do.
