TOCA lap times

7 posts by 6 people · 03 Aug 1998 - 10 Aug 1998

Anybody watch the BTCC action at Thruxton this weekend? I noticed that the best lap times were in the region of 1:17. That's way outside the best laps on Jonathan Hills TOCA site. Why such a big difference? -- Andrew Fielden. UK.
I would guess that it's easier to cut corners in the game than it is in real life. John

Why such a big >difference? TOCA (the game) is not quite set in reality? :) Comparing the event program's estimation of cornering speeds/gear's it is quite off. Most of the corners on the back section require braking and a lift off or two, and that's just not evident in the game. Plus, i think you'll find most of the real life boys don't quite throw it over the chicane. Interestingly, watching the cars going through the complex shows how difficult it is to overtake there- mainly it's done going up the hill towards the chicane. Can't help but wish that TOCA 2 would include the toca package... Vaxhaull Jr's/Sri challange Renault Spiders/ Formula Renault Sport Ford Fiesta/ Formula Ford... now wouldn't that be some great fun? :) btw, it seems to me that Thruxton is probably the least authentic in toca tourign car- the run off's and fences are just not right at most points of the circuit. (granted, i haven't been to Knockhill yet, but i hopefully plan on getting this to change...) Z.

The least authentic is Silverstone, the layout is just plain wrong. You should go straight between Abbey and Bridge rather than use the left-right at Farm. Farm is only used as part of the Grand Prix circuit. Redshoes Racing - http://www.redshoes.demon.co.uk/ Motorsports Archive - http://hot.virtual-pc.com/redshoes/

I know its meant to be realistic, but lets get real here, if it was THAT realistic, it wouldnt be half as much fun to play! Shortcuts across corners, and having cars that are way more forgiving than a real touring car is much better for a game. And its not a pure simulation anyway, otherwise temperatures would change, circuit conditions come into play, tyres can grip more or less etc etc etc -- Nathan Wong http://www.nectar.com.au/~alfacors - Super Touring - Alfa Romeo - - V8Supercars - CART -

As everyone has said, the cornering speeds are silly in TOCA but the biggest is the chicane. Too much use of the curbs in TOCA is fine but in real life those things are BIG (I've seen a pretty heavy F3 accident there). The complex is also a little "rough" but as TOCA is more of an arcade racer I don't really mind... after all it helps me choose where to watch races from when I go to meetings more often than not. :) On Mon, 03 Aug 1998 12:58:14 +0100, Andrew Fielden
