Target 12 wrote You will be "able", but at a framerate and graphic quality soo low that you will find it frustating. Grand Prix Legends was made to uptimize graphic quality with Rendition and 3dfx cards. Your STB Card uses a nVidia chipset, who isn't uptimized for the game. You will get probably less than 10fps with most of the graphics off in 640x480, seriously... So as a good news... 3d accelerators are very low these days in price. You can get a Voodoo1 card for less than 100$, and a Voodoo2 for around 200. If you can buy yourself that sort of PC, I doubt you can't find the money for a 3d accelerator. The STB is a great card (I also have an STB card) but for Grand Prix Legends and also all the Papyrus games on the market, it's not enough... ymenard wrote Hmmm, are they going to support DirectX or should I just not bother buying it? (I have a dual PII 400, 256MB with a Matrox G200 AGP card). I would say I find it hard to believe they'd be stupid enough not to, but I'm sort of used to the stupidity of software vendors these days. And speaking of such, I really can't be bothered installing another operating system. NT4 won't support most racing simulations or demanding games, because the needed hardware support is not included in the OS. Maybe, maybe, NT 5???? -- **************************** Michael E. Yeah, in software mode only. Only 3Dfx and Rendition support it in hardware.
Or........... NO!

Gotta agree with you there. Never could work out why they did not do a D3D version in light of the supposedly much improved Direct X 6.

Or at the least a Gl version. Must admit to be a bit suprised at their choice of 3D API's. Z.

Here's my 2 cents worth on the matter. One has to remember that the game has been in development for 4 years. Only recently have Direct 3D and OpenGL come into the *** arena with real quality. Perhaps there would have to be a lot of tweaking to be made to the game engine for it to work well with the newer APIs, which would have added another year or two to the development schedule. If this is the case, it mat have not been financially possible for Papy to take the time to cater to those APIs. The last statement was my opinion only. Chris, maybe, but outside the Papy-sim fans, no one uses rendition- so effectively, you have a sim which caters to people who are going to buy it no matter what, and 3Dfx owners. With all the new cards (TNT, G200, i740, etc) it seems quite silly to limit yourselves to these people. Even more so with this engine forming the basis of Nascar 3- a good year away. They'd have to plan on adding it by then, i'd think. Regardless of how good it is, i think convincing the casual owner to spend more money on a 3Dfx card over their G200 or similar is not going to happen. Z.

Richard Walker wrote Well, I have a Playstation for most of my *** (Wipeout, Gran Turismo, NFS3) and the only PC games I'd consider buying are racing car games. (Indeed, the only PC games I *have* bought were Indy 500 and GP1.) But my PC is a work PC and therefore when I specced it, I chose components for their work value. The Matrox G200 is a damn good card at supporting 1600*1200 at 65k with a good refresh. It's 3D is also meant to be pretty good - well above that of a Voodoo 1. So, why couldn't they have included at least one cross-card driver model, either OpenGL or DirectX? I'd buy GPL if it ran on my hardware. As it is, I won't. And my final note - if you like racing games, I suggest you take a serious look at Wipeout on the Playstation. Yes, yes, I know it's anti-grav and all that ***- but it has more depth in the driving model than any other game I've played. I've been playing it for a few years (it's a game I always go back to) and I'm *still* getting better at it. Only the insiders at Papyrus know, but for their own sakes I > would like to see Papy embrace D3D - but only as long as they continue to > provide optimised 3dfx versions ;-)) Dunno about that. I'd like to see everyone jump on the D3D bandwagon and make it all it can/should be. All this 'this card for this and that card for that' nonsense is VERY old already. So is all this add on card stuff. I want to be able to buy a combo card that runs the lot well! Now, time for a little paranoia? :) Maybe Papy released GPL with Rendition/3DFX only because Rendition/3DFX paid them too. Now, where's my shotgun!?

I hope we get spared by NT5, if it ever sees the light of day. I think software companies taking a long good look at Linux in the next couple of years is much more likely than them delving into that ugly mess called NT, be it version 0.4 or 0.5. cheers, Uwe -- Spam-proof e-mail: Uwe Schuerkamp <hoover at telemedia . de> http://www.telemedia.de/~hoover ////// Phone: +49-5241-80-10-66 Best of Scottish Folk: http://home.pages.de/~nsg >>> Blue Ribbon Campaign: Support Free Speech on the Internet <<<
