GPL on Pentium Pro CPU

3 posts by 3 people · 02 Oct 1998 - 02 Oct 1998

Given that Alison has stated that GPL makes extensive use of the L2 cache, I'm wondering how does GPL run on a 200 MHz Pentium Pro. The Pentium Pro has the L2 cache built into the chip so the core can access it at full chip speed. Has anybody with a 200 MHZ Pentium Pro, and a Pure3D Voodoo 1 graphics card tried GPL? If so, what kind of performance are you getting? Thanks in advance, Gary.

I am getting somewhat better results (24-30 fps) on my PPro system (overclocked to 233, Herc Thriller 3d 8mb-overclocked, running Fastvid as well). However I am wondering if the Pentium II Overdrive chip for PPro would make matters any better. If the game is so dependent on L2 Cache, then I would think it would be a very wise investment. Considering that not only would one be going up to 512k cache (from 256k), but it would also be running at the 333Mhz chip speed (not half). Seeing that the prices for this Pentium II Overdrive are finally starting to come down. I may consider trying out one of these in the upcoming weeks. I'll post my findings if I do. F1Filter
