First try reducing the number of sounds heard. If that doesn't help,
try reducing the level of hardware acceleration in the MonsterSound
control panel.

Crackling engine sounds in Grand Prix Legends on various sound cards
Users reported scratchy, distorted engine sounds in GPL, especially the Ferrari, on cards such as the Ensoniq AudioPCI, Monster Sound and SB AWE32. One poster found the engine samples themselves contained many clipped samples, while others fixed it by reverting to older Creative drivers or reinstalling Windows with reference drivers. Papyrus's Eric Busch suggested reducing the number of sounds and hardware acceleration levels.

I've got the same problem. It's awful: big-time. I'm using an Ensoniq
AudioPCI card through Altec ACS45's. Changing the # of sounds has no effect,
nor does changing the sound settings in the app.ini or player.ini files. What
it does to the Ferrari's sound is painful to listen to - Arrrgh! No problem
with any other games. Any thoughts out there??

Well..you can uppack the sound.dat file and edit the wind noise down
to nothing. One approach, anyway.

I turned down the volume of the .wav file in the demo. After replacing
the generic Lotus engine with one from a website, the wind was just
too noisy.
Does the pack/unpack utility we used for ICR2 files work with GPL?

Yes...the very same utilities..

Nope. Ensoniq AudioPCI w/latest CL SB 64PCI drivers, DX6, & Altec ACS45's, and
it's from the engine sounds. I unpacked the sound.dat file and played the wavs
seperately. There's a gravelly static-like quality to the sound that's
annoying at a minimum, but downright criminal with the Ferrari. I don't know
whether it's a hardware problem or a listener preference, but I can't imagine
the rapturous responses to the 312B engine sound (or the others) if they're
hearing what I hear. You get enough to know it's a great sound, if not for the
static (maybe not the best word), but are aggravated by the overall quality.
A bit like listening to blown speakers, but they're not. It really gets in the
way of enjoying GPL. In Sierra's tech support FAQ for GPL, they suggest
running DXSETUP from the CD and checking if the sound drivers show as
"certified" for Direct X. Did that and CL's latest (for this card) are not.
Still, I haven't seen this problem elsewhere. Hmmmmmmmmmm.
Steve B.
Have to agree with Steve B.; I also have the Ensonic card w/ latest
drivers, and engine sound, while OK, cannot be what others are hearing.
Scratchy sound, almost reminiscent of a worn out LP. (for those who are too
young to remember, an LP(sometimes refered to as a "record") was a funny
looking flat piece of some kind of plastic, usually black, that you rotated,
put a needle on, & heard music from. As it wore out from the friction of the
needle sometimes causing little scratches, the sound deteriorated. Hence
the term "Sounds scratchy". Another technical marvel called an "8-track
player" would begin to sound(no pun intended ;-) ) the death knell for the
LP. Don't even get me started on 8-tracks, or stories about pulling little
ribbons out of tiny places while in an uncompromising position, because it
was her "favorite song", will make me forget what the h*** I was responding
to.
Uhhhhh, what the h*** WAS I responding to??????

running windows. I didn't seem to happy to share pci with my rendition
card. But I also get high frequency noise with GPL.
Guys,
I had the same scratchy sound with an AudioPCI and the latest SBPCI
drivers from Creative (the ones dated 10/2/98 on Creative's website)
I reinstalled the original SBPCI drivers, and updated them with
Creative's August 28th driver update, and the sound is now fine in GPL.

from the cards installation CD and have no problems. If I am not
mistaken, the only thing Creative added with the SB 64 drivers was 4
channel audio support. GPL does not have 4 channel audio, so if you
have the option change your sound type to standard 2 channel stereo.
Just an idea.

I'm running the game on a Monster Sound M80 and have the same problems. I
called up tech support and we tried everything to fix it. after about an
hour on the phone they told me they were still testing to see if the could
find a fix for it and to e-mail them about it.
It's nice to hear that I'm not the only one having a problem and it's not
just my monster sound.

That "certified drivers" business shows up every now and then in
official FAQs. In my experience, it's usually more important that one
gets the newest drivers if a problem occurs, be they certified or not.
You said you unpacked the .wav files from the .dat file. Did they
sound wrong even when you played them seperately? Then it might really
be a problem of personal preferences. There is a saying in German that
goes approximately: "The one person's owl is the other person's
nightingale." :)

I wondered about that. I've also been fooling around with them in Cooledit, a
program that's a bit over my non-audiophile head. Of interest is that the
engine sounds that are the most objectionable have the most clipped samples,
also. For example, the Ferrari sound consists of 114,195 samples, which
Cooledit says 63,034 are clipped. Looking at the waveform diagram, the waves
are truncated at the extreme amplitudes. I tried the noise reduction utility
with linited success, but really don't know if that's the correct approach.
Not my field, by a long shot. The BRM, by the way, doesn't have the static
problem, and has a sound file with exactly 0 clipped samples. Hmmmmmm. Of
note; ALL the sounds are mono, some 8bit and others 16, and the Repco,
Westlake, and F2/F3 engine sounds are identical, though they're 3 different
files, meaning they're independently addressable.
Still looking for sonic nirvana,
Steve B.
I can attest to the fact that GPL sounds like dog dung with an old timer
AWE32 with the most recent drivers installed and reinstalled. I just
about went nuts with the Ferrari sound. Testers, did this make the beta
hit list?

But then, I just read a lot of postings complaining about the sound in
GPL. Apparently, some of the newest / most expensive PCI soundcards
are affected worst. So maybe there is an objective coding/driver/
hardware problem after all.

Same here. I have an old SB AWE32 also.
The crackle in the car samples is EXTREMELY pronounced if you listen
with headphones.
I'm not a real stickler for audio, and the problem wasn't too
noticeable on my crummy little speakers.

I am also experiencing the distortion on the
engine sounds - my sound components are a
Turtle Beach Montego PCI sound card (Dell OEM
version) and Altech 495 USB speakers.
Are there any others with this setup that
are not getting the distortion?
It's really a shame, because without the
distortion, these engine sounds are phenomenal.

I don't mind the crackling for now.
My problem is that I can't enable sound on my SB AWE64
or the game crashes (not right away but soon). Looks like
a DirectX or SB driver problem to me.
I wanna get this baby fixed. Can't wait to race on the 'net
with my cable modem :)

I got the sound working in GPL.
Just had to do a fresh install of Win98 (DX5) and
install the Reference Drivers for the Monster1.
I'm not sure what caused my old config to die,
but I will find out once I reinstall everything --
except for DX6 :)
I love the Ferrari sound -- ohh baby!
I don't mind the slight cracking... I'm just happy it
works :)
Cya on the 'net -- cable modem racing time!

Thank you, then I`m not the only one then :-)
I thought it might be a bad file in the "warez" version I had so it
didn`t bother me too much, but when I finally got my "paid for" copy of
GPL, it sounds terrible
I too have an old AWE32 non PnP, I`ve kept it because it has JUMPERS
(remember those :-), and don`t have to rely on Win95/98 for disabling
gameports and other stuff
Maybe I have to get a newer card, but all the other cars are ok,
actually they sound ***y great :-)
Beers and cheers
