Nascar Thunder 2004 (Ps2) Drafting Question

NASCAR Thunder 2004 PS2 draft-sharing button question

A console player asked how the draft-sharing button works in NASCAR Thunder 2004 on PS2, prompting jokes about pressing a button to draft. It was clarified that the feature belongs to the console-only Grudges and Alliances system and does not affect the actual draft. The thread became an argument over whether Thunder deserved to be called a sim, with some name-calling.

I know about draft sharing with the cars in front of you. This is done by pressing the R2 button I believe. The manual indicates that you can share a draft with the car behind you (or I read this incorrectly). If I can share a draft with a car behind, what button do I press to accomplish this? Is this just implied and the only way to share a draft is to just stay in front of the rear car? Thanks for any info. -----= Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News =----- http://www.newsfeeds.com - The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! -----== Over 100,000 Newsgroups - 19 Different Servers! =-----
I think so. It appears to me that the "share draft" is really meant to be a "Don't let me rear end this dude REALLY hard" button. However when your draft meter fills up while someone is behind you, you are letting them draft. <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Are you kidding? Sounds like a James Bond car! :) JB - "What's this button do Q?" Q - "Don't touch that you idiot!" Whatever you do, don't touch the "e" key (eject), especially if you're in the model without the sunroof. <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

It is EA, though...Home of the games where you can run a lap 2 seconds and 10 MPH quicker than anyone has all day and they still catch up to you two laps later...

>But seriously, do you really need to press a button to draft? Or is >that only in the Ps2 version? I thought drafting was all about race >craft. No, it doesn't affect the draft itself. You can still do this without pressing R2. Draft sharing is for the Grudges and Alliance sytem that EA has in Thunder 2004. I have raced without it before and done quite well. The only thing I had a question about is whether you can "share a draft" with the car behind you as the manual seems to indicate but does not specifically say how to accomplish within the Grudges and Alliance Sytem. -----= Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News =----- http://www.newsfeeds.com - The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! -----== Over 100,000 Newsgroups - 19 Different Servers! =-----
As an addendum to my last post, I am not a particular fan of EA version on Nascar. It has an incredibly long way to go before it even approaches Papy racing. I am just to cheap to buy a good computer to run Papy, so I have opted for the cheesier racing games for the console. Besides, EA has the right to Nascar so I figure I had better get used to it because that is all there is gonna be for a while. The only game I have that even makes a dent in Papy is Atari/Infogrames Nascar: Dirt to Daytona and even this would need a radical overhaul to be as good as Papy. -----= Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News =----- http://www.newsfeeds.com - The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! -----== Over 100,000 Newsgroups - 19 Different Servers! =-----

So in summary you dont have enough PC ponies to run NR2003 (Which Thunder requires more of everything) yet you, the all knowing one can assure all the rest of us that have actually tried it and tried it the way it was meant to run that its far from the quality of any Papy release???. Get real. Am I saying it's better than NR2003? No, but it's a dam fine sim that has potential. It just kills me when guys that havent even tried, or worse tried the PS2 version have an opinion on the PC version. Mitch <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

I think for most people it is a shock that somebody even slightly defends Thunder as being a sim, so don't take people too seriously when they joke around about it. I personally think EA has the potential (and $$$) to make a great sim (F1C is great), but I don't think they will do it because more $$$ are related to arcade style games rather than sims. What I would like to see happen is EA hiring Papyrus to make a sim or to even release future versions of Nascar Racing Season. At the same time EA could continue to release Thunder for all the little kiddies to play. My nephews love it, but they are 10 and 7. Opinions are opinions and more power to ya if you like Thunder! Play it until the end of time, but unless it improves it is my humble opinion that most dedicated sim racers probably won't join ya. Have a nice day! Lumping ME with arcade kiddies if funny in it's own right. Ive been doing this since the BEGINNING of PC simming and am as dedicated as ANYONE. I only care about the most realistic sim as possible period which is why Im so bored too death with NR2003. NR2003 cars feel like tuna boats on an ice rink. If anyone else could get the online code up to Papy standards we might actually move forward instead of standing still with the same crap they been throwin at us since N4. Ive said it before and Ill say it agian one last time. Is thunder04 better than NR2003? No, not at this point. Is it a step in the right direction? IMO definitely. In fact aspects of Thunder04 are much better than NR2003. Overall NR2003 is still champ, Ive never argued that, what I have argued is that NR2003 will be the champ by this time next year? It sure won't be on my hard drive and hopefully I have something in the racing genre to replace it with or its back to LOMAC. If we as a community don't support FUTURE sims were just shooting ourselves in the foot. You do undertand that simple concept dontchya? Have you even tried the Thunder Demo? I find it odd that you like F1C as it feels remarkably similar to Thunder. I actually bought Thunder 2004 because of all the hype and I was deeply disappointed. I guess I did lump you in there, my apologies, that wasn't my intention and you can quote me when I said "opinions are opinions, etc." I don't think F1C feels similar to Thunder and I own them both. You don't have to ask me if I support that concept either. Of course I want to see bigger and better sims created. If EA came out with a sim that was better than NR2003 I would play the h*ll out of it, but right now, to quote you, "Overall NR2003 is still champ..". And I agree with Peter, "So why don't you just put us all straight, instead of working so hard on the come backs?" I really don't understand what you are talking about. I never made any comment on the PC version of Thunder 04. I was only comparing the Console version against Papyrus Nacar Racing Series. I have no clue as to the PC version of Thunder since like I said I am not willing to spend $1500 on a $50 dollar game no matter who makes it. When I started this thread it was just a simple question about Thunder 04 for PS2. I never intended to start a "which sim is better" debate. I have raced Papy since the first one came out untill the last versions came out. The game outgrew my system after N4. I have since that time been using the PS2 Versions from EA and Infogrames. I have found things I like about all of them and thing I don't like. It is really up the the individual which one he likes at any particular moment in time. Anyway, my original question still has not been answered. Any intelligent person would have answered the question (even if it was to say that they don't know) and been done with it. Instead we have some people who would rather argue about something that has nothing to do with the original point of the topic. -----= Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News =----- http://www.newsfeeds.com - The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! -----== Over 100,000 Newsgroups - 19 Different Servers! =-----

You're a no nothing dumbass. The PS2 and PC versions of Nascar Thunder 2004 are not even developed by the same people. Look up Tiburion and then ISI. No! There is no button to press in order to draft in the PC version. The PC version of Thunder *2004* is almost as much a sim of Nascar racing as the Papyrus version.

Also, the fact that you think Thunder 2004 is almost as much a sim of Nascar racing as the Papyrus version is your opinion and I respect that. Please lay off the name, that is lame and childish. Your performance dictates how difficult or easy a race can be for you. If you race like a maniac and hit your opponents and knock them off the track youll end up making enemies. During, or at the end of each race a red or green icon appears above certain racers who either have a grudge or have an alliance with you green represents alliance, red represents a grudge. Both grudges and alliances are also represented by percentages, Naturally the higher the percentage, the greater the grudge or alliance. Having an alliance with another racer can cause him to allow you to pass or share a draft quite frequently. Having a grudge will cause your opponent to give you a bump at every opportune moment, which can cause you to lose the race. Get real. Am I > saying it's better than NR2003? No, but it's a dam fine sim that has > potential. It just kills me when guys that havent even tried, or worse > tried the PS2 version have an opinion on the PC version. I've tried the Thunder 2004 demo, and I still prefer NR2003. As you've said though, each has its "qualities." Personally, I find the grip in Thunder to be a little wacky, particularly at speed. At Texas, I was practically drifting through the corners. I couldn't get my time down to match the AI (100%) in practice until I just threw the car into the turns, waited for the back end to start sliding, and countersteered. Mind you, I wouldn't want to do that in a race, but the fact that it even works seems strange. If I take what I'd consider a more normal approach, the front end just plows while the AI flies by. Then again, if I get glued to the wall and pull the car off it, the back end starts a gradual yet uncorrectable slide that leaves me down in the grass. The setup probably has a lot to do with it, and if you have one that works better than the defaults, I'd love to give it a go. That isn't to say I think NR2003 is perfect. The clutch is practically useless, there might be a tad too much grip at low RPM (especially at the non-plate tracks), and there are other intangibles that feel off too. It just seems that -overall- it responds more like I would expect an actual Cup car to respond. FWIW, I love F1C. Actually, one thing I love about both F1C and NR2003 is that when the setup is working well, you can really feel it. I only wish I felt it more often. Anyway, that's just the opinion of an average driver whose real world experience doesn't extend beyond 40 mph karts and my daily driver, and I have no misgivings about my naivety when it comes to the real deal. :) Alan

The problem isnt the hardware it's the software. Although I didnt use the clutch as a clutch, that pedal worked great for looking behing me :) (at least in F1C/mods) I'm sure eventually we'll get a realistic clutch so if you have the hardware you'll be ready. Unless were stuck with NR2003 as "The last sim" ;) Get extra springs or do the upgrade (http://www.slottweak.com/ IIRC) yourself as you'll go through a few springs a year. Good feel poor design. Oh, ok. So the clutch problem is the software. Well, that gives me a little bit of hope, I was already planning on going through with a return to ActLabs. I have used the TSW two pedals system and I was happy with the feel of the pedals, but I didn't want to pay an extra 100 bucks, however, I would have if it meant getting a realistic clutch. Ta Da ! ;o) Elrikk
In my experience with Thunder 04for PS2, I prefer to use manual shift over auto shift because I want to stay in fourth gear at most ovals and I just never could tweak the ratios right to prevent the downshift with the auto setting. This was especially annoying at short tracks like Martinsville. As far as the grip feel on the track, I think EA screwed up the vibration function and you cannot feel your wheels. I believe that is why it feels more slippery. I went back to Thunder 2002 and compared from there to 2004. I think 2002 "feels" better to me. -----= Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News =----- http://www.newsfeeds.com - The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! -----== Over 100,000 Newsgroups - 19 Different Servers! =-----

Yea, I to agree that the AI is the biggest problem in D2D and also there is an issue of pitting at some of the shorter tracks. I would of loved to see Atari/Infrogrames had taken this game. I believe if given half a chance they could have had a console version that couldn't be beat. -----= Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News =----- http://www.newsfeeds.com - The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! -----== Over 100,000 Newsgroups - 19 Different Servers! =-----

Well, I would have to agree with you on that point. I would much rather post to a group specifically design around this game. If you know one please let me know because it may have just the right info I am looking for. -----= Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News =----- http://www.newsfeeds.com - The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! -----== Over 100,000 Newsgroups - 19 Different Servers! =-----
Apology accepted. Just for your reference and from the posts that I have read I can understand where I may have confused people. This "feature" is either not being used on the PC version (by the users?) or is not an option in that version and is limited to the Consoles. Next time I will make sure I more clearly describe what I am asking about. -----= Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News =----- http://www.newsfeeds.com - The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! -----== Over 100,000 Newsgroups - 19 Different Servers! =-----

Yeah, that's what I was referring to, and I actually use the AL pedals and shifter. Basically, in NR2003, you can't get any wheelspin from a standstill unless you dump the clutch while you're bouncing off the rev limiter. If it's cold and the tires fresh, there is wheelspin in first and second at modest RPMs if you hammer it too hard while under way. All I can figure is that, as others have mentioned, Papy programmed in an always on clutch aid due to the lack of a properly modeled clutch. Not that I want to do burnouts all day long, but it's just an "immersion factor" that's missing. Of course, if Cup cars really are like that, then never mind. Alan
To be serious, what is it anyway? Is this like radio communication with other drivers/teams? <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

This is an article posted by Peter Ives. I have reposted it here. One thing to point out is that the actual physical draft is not affected only the Grudges sytem. When sharing a draft (by pressing R2 on PS2) you are just trying to make friends with the guy you sharing that draft with and thats it, nothing more. Hope this is of some help to you. Found it at 'the armchair empire' website: www.armchairempire.com 'The most notable addition is the new alliances and grudge system. The best part of the grudge and alliance system is that it lasts throughout your career or season mode.' -- Peter Ives (AKA Pete Ivington) Remove ALL_STRESS before replying via email If you know what's good for you, don't listen to me :) GPLRank Joystick -50.63 Wheel -25.01On Tue, 24 Feb 2004 12:54:55 GMT, "Byron John Forbes" <[email hidden]> wrote: > -----= Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News =----- http://www.newsfeeds.com - The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! -----== Over 100,000 Newsgroups - 19 Different Servers! =-----
