GPL - Redline????

Finding the redline and slowing AI in GPL

A new player asked about the redline and how to slow down AI opponents. Replies explained the red needle is a telltale and that peak power revs on the car selection screen are a guide, while AI strength could be lowered with the AI Tweak utility or by editing track.ini. One user made custom tachometers with redline markers.

Um...what the hell is the redline of the various cars??? I mean the "red line" that is on the tach just keeps moving up the higher I rev it. What is my safe limit on the various cars. The Ferrari just keeps going past 9k.... I have no idea if this is a good thing, or a bad thing. I checked the book and can't find any reference to it. Also, is there any way to SLOW DOWN the competition? As soon as a race starts they leave me at the grid. I can never catch up.... I realize they are much better than me, but at this rate I never get a chance to practice dicing with any cars. TIA!

What car are you driving? I am driving the Lotus and I don't have any problems keeping up with the other cars on the start (even with the default setup). Now staying on the track so that I can stay with them throughout the race is another story. Good Luck, Dean
No help from me on redline - would like to know myself. On AI speed look for a program called ai_tw102.exe (sorry cant find URL I downloaded AITweak from) it allows setting all AI drivers to differnt levels. > Um...what the hell is the redline of the various cars??? I'm using the Ferrari GP car. The guys just dust me at the start.

> Um...what the hell is the redline of the various cars??? Check in the user setup (where you put your name in andselect the car). You'll notice the picture of the car has specifications on horse-power at ____ RPMS. That red line is the telltale -- tells you your highest rev point. Ferrari passed 9000RPM is a good thing! Hehe. You want the neighbors to hear you screaming down the straights. That kinda sound only develops at 10,000+ RPM :) Seriously, I always shift at 10,400 RPMs in my Ferrari. I just get clobbered in the straights if I don't 'wind the baby up' :) You must be talking AI. I like them even though I'm running in 10thpostition or down :) Play on VROC (it rocks!) http://gpl.gamestats.com/vroc There are other humans that drive like you. You will always be able to dice with someone. Ciao, -------- Jason Monds (Please remove 'no extra spork' when replying)

Didnt see it on Allison's site but it is at the following URL http://user.sgic.fi/~icon/ai_tweak/ai_tw102.exe/ download and place in same folder as GPL driver.ini file. Also if you dont have a file VBRUN300.DLL in your windows\system folder then download it (same url) and place in the windows\system folder. VBRUN.DLL is required to run AITW102.EXE (AI Speed Tweaker) Don

The pedal on the right is the throttle, push it to the floor! ;-) (hehe, then keep it in a straight line)

The revs where it's making max power (as displayed on team selection screen) is a fairly good reference point. Don't go much higher than that.... There's a file around on GPL pages that spreads the field a bit better, so some cars are still just as fast, but others will be slower....
>Also, is there any way to SLOW DOWN the competition? As soon >as a race starts they leave me at the grid. I can never catch up.... >I realize they are much better than me, but at this rate I never get >a chance to practice dicing with any cars. go to the tracks subdirectory and edit the track.ini file for the track you want to race on. There's a value called dlong_speed_adj_coeff = 0.980000 ; value modifies dlong velocities ;(i.e. RELS) in .LP Change this to anything you want, the above example would set the opponents at 98% strength. It works great and makes the game much more interesting for us beginners. Ah, I see ... but then how is one supposed to know where the maximum revs are (without blowing an engine)? Joe

And THAT, my friend, is what commonly is referred to as a "bug". Not the software kind, not the small creepy crawly kind. See? (Geez, I don't even speak English! What do I know? :-) /petern

I've actually created new tachos for each car in GPL that indicates the redline. Well what I think the redline is from the maximum power outputs from the car stats page. All I've done is painted a white marker on the dial where the redline should be. Just as if a driver stuck some masking tape to the dial. It's nothing very attractive or artistic but it does the job, I don't blow up engines now. I haven't made a utility to update the car .dat files yet. But if anyone who owns a GPL web page wants the updated car .dat files they're welcome to them. Just so you know I will not email the dat files to anyone who doesn't own a web page. Rob Yates. Watch your gauges, especially oil temperature <http://www.voicenet.com/~jeffreyh/gpl/gplgauges.html> Check the stats on your car in GPL and learn to "hear" when you are in the max rev range. But basically, I usually end up pegging the beast on the start and then use the tell-tale as a point to stay under by a few 1,000 rpm's. -- **************************** Michael E. Eric, I've got an easy answer for both your questions. The "red line" on the tach is a "tell tale". It only indicates the highest rpm since it was last set. Besides looking at the engine spec in the menu and then trying to count off the little tick marks on the tach, which I have trouble doing, I just run a few laps of pre-race practice with at least another car of the same model I'm driving. After a few laps I check the replay, find whichever driver is driving the model like mine (Gurney in a Westlake, for example, if I'm driving the Eagle), watch where he shifts from the ***pit view. That works pretty good for me BTW, the tell tale won't keep climbing forever. Each car has a rev limiter. Some are set higher than others because of engine differences. The rev limiter is not a good shift point indicator, however. To slow the other cars down adjust the RELS just like the other Papyrus sims. :-) In the individual track files (?/GPL/tracks/whichever) there's a track Configuration Setting folder (track.ini). If you open it up you should find a line that reads: [ GP ] dlong_speed_adj_coeff = 0.990000 Actually, that's what I've adjusted mine to for Spa. The original number reads a little higher than 1. Something like 1.038000. The line description as you'll see, says: ; value modifies dlong velocities (i.e. RELS) in .LP Seems to work just like RELS (RELetive Strength) in Indycar/CART and NASCAR. Enjoy! -Mike P.S. If it's just the starts, which I doubt, you just need to practice them. I usually leave the transmission in neutral, when the flag guy raises the flag I bring up the revs about two thirds or so. When he drops the flag I hit the shift button and floor it, until the tires break loose, then I lift a little and sort of feather the throttle trying to keep the revs just below max, and the front end pointed absolutely straight (most important, and you have to feather the throttle for that, too). If I get everything just right, which I usually don't, I can usually pass several cars at the start.
