Sense of speed in Viper Racing

9 posts by 6 people · 06 Dec 1998 - 09 Dec 1998

Without going into any other aspects of this title, the sense of speed in the graphics (which otherwise I find fine and do not mind the sparseness) is basically....non-existent. It may be the worst I have seen in any recent game/sim. Driving at 200 km/h has trees and road signs passing by as though you are driving 70 or 80. That's truish at Silverdale but try Sunset Mesa, Rocky Ridge or the one by the sea, I think it feels fast on these tracks. Paul

You're right, Mark. That's the reason why I won't get VR. CPR may be shitty in many ways, but the sense of speed you get there is still unseen in modern racing-sims except GPL. Mea***er

You have got to be kidding, right? Let's see.... CPR with patch and minimal graphic detail on PII 266, 64 mb ram, 2 Voodoo2's in SLI produces maybe 25fps on some tracks, less than 20 fps in traffic, and that is at 640x480. GPL at 800x600 produces far superior results than CPR on my machine, even with traffic. My personal opinion is that CPR has absoulutely NO SENSE OF SPEED! Probably the worst of any "sim" in the last 2 years. I have seen this "sense of speed" mentioned in reviews, posts, etc., and I have never witnessed it for myself. Not on 2 different machines I own, not on a friends P2 400, not on Microsoft's machines demoing CPR at E3 97 and with force feedback contoller at E3 98. I guess I must be missing something. Seriously, do I have something setup wrong? What frames rates should I be able to achieve? And if frame rates are not the issue, what is it that makes CPR seem fast? What system specs are required to get a great sense of speed in CPR? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Don Chapman
CART:PR does have an excellent sense of speed...as long as you can keep the car on the road long enough to enjoy it--which requires a very careful steering set-up and good car set-ups. The default set-ups are not very good. I had a K6-166 when CART:PR was released, but if you use the 3dfx patch the processor should not be a huge factor. The frame rate and the sense of speed are completely different things..well not completely, but quite different. I get great frame rates on my current system with Viper Racing, but it still looks like I am taking a Sunday stroll even though the speedo says I am going 250 km/h. NICE 2, a German Need For Speed type game has an awesome sense of speed--much better than NFS II or III itself. GPL is great if you have the machine to crank up the graphics. Remember the strobing road in NFS II? You could have had a 1 GHz processor with triple Voodoo IIs and it would still look like you were standing still in relation to the road because that's the way the road surface graphics were (badly) designed. The sense of speed has nothing to do with frame rate. CPR seems to barrage me with speed, where things seem to happen slower in GPL. I feel that i must be very on top of things in CPR since a corner is coming up very quickly. for example turn one at Elkart Lake goes so fast I am not sure what happens to the car mid corner. In GPL you make many corrections during a corner to maintian balance. The easiest way to explain it is the difference between road racing and Autocrossing. Road racing is a mix of usually higher speed corners where you can process the full turn, where autcrossing thing happen very quickly and your turns are very tight and short. The feeling of speed in Autocrossing is there but you do not go near as fast as road racing. I have both games and realy enjoy both of them. Dave

Wrong, dude. Don't need two Voo2's to get that result. Got a PII 350 64MB RAM Voo1, and speed-sensation's the only joy left with CPR since GPL is out. Dunno bout the exact framerates, but I get some great results (3dfx, 640x480) I'd bet the farm on that. To be honest, I even had a good time playing it on my old P166 / 128MB / 3dfxVoo1 - but without any AI cars. >What frames rates should I be able to achieve? I agree with the other posters. Frame rates and sense of speed are two different and almost unrelated things. On my Pentium 233 and Voodoo I, I get about the same frame rates as your talking about with CPR, yet the car speed seems very realistic. Not that I would know what a realistic Indy ride would be, but the sensation of speed is there in CPR. Everything is hyper-feeling with CPR. If you've ever driven over 100 mph in real life, you'll know that when you slow down to the legal limit it feels like you're stuck in molasses. Same with CPR. After you run some hot laps with CPR (pick a track - it doesn't matter), Viper Racing and even Nascar II feel so slow. It's all relative. -- Bill Jones e-mail addresses: (860) 437-5650 WWW: http://pages.cthome.net/billj
