HELP! Wheel and Pedal problems!!!!

8 posts by 6 people · 10 Dec 1998 - 15 Dec 1998

I just bought the Thrustmaster NASCAR SUPER SPORT steering wheel and I am having problems with it. I configure it as I am supposed to in WIN 98 and off I go. If I am playing any WINDOWS based games (VIPER Racing, Colin Mcrae RALLY, etc....) the wheel and pedals work fairly well, although I noticed sometimes that while in the middle of the game, the wheel's calibration goes to shit and I am forced to drive the remainder of the distance with the wheel slightly***ed to one side down straightaways as the wheel's center somehow gets knocked off. I then have to exit the game I am playing in order to re-calibrate the wheel. Basically, when the calibration goes off, I want to be able to pause the game I'm playing (lets say it is VIPER for example), minimize it, then go back to the Windows desktop without actually quitting (leaving the game still running in the background). If I can do this, I can then re-calibrate the wheel using the Thrustmaster WIN 98 software, then just click on the minimized game on the control bar to put the game back into the foreground right where I left off. I can't remember what the keystroke command that you hit on your keyboard is to bring up the windows desktop and minimize the current application (or game in my case) into the background. Can anyone help me out here??? The 2nd problem is the big deal though. I cannot get the BRAKE pedal to operate in DOS based games at all! This really sucks shit because that means I can't play GP2 or any other DOS game with it! Prior to acquiring this TM SUPER SPORT wheel and pedals, my old THRUSTMASTER T2 setup worked great for these DOS based games. To play these DOS games, I boot up into WIN98, then either hit the "START" button, followed by "SHUT DOWN" followed by "RESTART IN DOS MODE", or I would just hit the MSDOS prompt button in WIN98. Either way I come up with a DOS prompt from which I can run these DOS based programs. In order to bypass this, what is the keystroke(s) that I can use during bootup that prevents WIN98 from loading, and instead coming up with the DOS prompt?? Anyway, back to the brake problem. If I am playing GP2 or the older EUROPRESS RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP for example (they both run in DOS mode), I go through the regular calibration in the game, but I have no brakes at all! I push the pedal down and there is no reaction from the game whatsoever. The rest of the controller (gas pedal, steering wheel, paddles, etc.....) works fine. While in DOS mode, I loaded TMSCOPE and TMSCOPE doesn't recognize the brake at all as well! So this shows that it isn't the games that are screwed, it is the wheel and pedals. Does anyone else have this problem? How can I setup this thing to recognize the brakes in DOS mode? Like I said earlier, it works fine in WINDOWS, but not DOS. I e-mailed ThrustMaster but they haven't replied yet. Any help at all that you could give me would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks in advance Cary Martynuik
I've just bought a Thrustmaster Formula Sprint and it does EXACTLY the same as you describe i.e. part way into a game (Colin McRae Rally, TOCA) the calibration goes off and to drive in a straight line I have to hold the wheel over about 20 degrees to the right. My old GP1 and a homemade wheel work fine. I too have e-mailed TM (in the UK) but have yet to get a reply. This is driving me mad!!! I'm glad it's not just me and I'd love to find a solution. Mark

I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one dealing with this shit as well. If you hear anything regarding possible fixes/patches, e-mail me and I will do the same if I come across any as well.
Alt-Tab will switch between running applications. If you can;t get there using that, leave something small like calc.exe running while the game is going and you can switch to that, which will have the same effect. daxe ---== http://www.newsfeeds.com - Largest Usenet Server In The World! ==--- ---== http://www.newsfeeds.com - Largest Usenet Server In The World! ==---

When you see "Starting Windows 98...", hit the F8 key and choose the "command line only" option. (That's for Win95, but Win98 is most likely very similar.) This is pure DOS, different from the methods you mentioned above, so it may help your problem. Also, you may have to configure DOS to load CD-ROM or sound card drivers (another topic for another post, but that should get you started). My SuperSport wouldn't stay centered either, and a friend's does it too. Best solution for the SuperSport is to return it (as I did) and get a Logitech Wingman Formula. I've only had it a couple of days, but it blows everything else at the price point into the weeds-not even close . The pedals do need stiffer springs, but otherwise, it kills. I've made some mods to mine to make it even better, as well. I'll post them with a review ASAP. If you're looing for a great sub-$100 non-FF wheel, look no further. Steve B. Make sure you have "Control Driven Calibration" checked. Calibrate the wheel according to the on screen instructions and things should work fine.
